Default LS1 Gen III in an XY??

just picked up the latest street machine mag on the way home from work, opened it up to find a write up on an XY GT rep with an LS1 in it.

"A carbie 351 is too heavy on the front end and the alloy Ford Motorsport gear is too pricey. I built the XY when BA was only just released, so forget about sourcing a BOSS 290 V8 cheaply. Bar the turbo six, Ford hasn't got an engine that provides the Chev's bang for bucks. The chev will do 400 horses for just five grand"

they go on to describe a few other 'benifits', such as weight, and economy compared to a carb'd clevo.

But even after all the excuses, it's still a LS1 in an XY :(

gaurentee you he didnt build it to make traditionalisis happy.

He justified himself quite well, ford's crate options are a joke in comparison to GM.

Lol. The XY is the second coming?

400hp for $5k... cant really argue with the guy. What's the list price on a boss 260?

I guess the historical problems with the general's powerplant wouldnt be a big problem if you were a capable spanner spinner (can only assume this guy is).

Lol... economy not really a valid excuse in my book - not when you're deciding what SB V8 to put in your XY....

That is just plain wrong if you ask me!
Worse than the RB motor in the Mustang.
Imagine a Monaro with a Boss 290 motor...

400 hp for 5k........ so what he took the cheap option then lol
People do things like this for one reason and one reason only, to get a rise out of people. Most of the ford fans will go yuck you put a chevy pos in a good XY. And the holden fans will go yuck you put that nice shinny chev in that old pos XY.
This guy will be coping it from both sides, but he would have known that when he started thats why he did it.And guess what it worked his car is in street machine so half his luck. I personally dont like that sort of thing but some will . And that ford motorsport gear is a rip off I mean $2500 for a block that will hang together with 1000 HP pumping out of it what a rip off (sarcasm) .
I would love to see this guy get smoked by someone with a 5 grand clevo in an XY.

He's not the first person to do it, I remember seeing a photo of an XY or XW ute with an injected BB chev in it a few years ago, also a guy who took the engine out of his GT and replaced it with a 6cyl. And lets not forget the hundreds of FORD Rods that are being built with Chevs in them. Lets face it, you can buy a lot more aftermarket parts for a chev.
Don't get me wrong I love the Ford engines and it's not something that I would do, but it's his car and he can justify what he has done I guess.

I'm sure if Ford produced an all Aluminium small Block crate motor for that price most people would go in that direction.

Cheers.

cant see anything wrong with mixing breeds, look at hot rodders they have been doing it for years and years now. It all comes down to a personal choice I think on how one wishes to build their car and spend thier money. As for it being a cheaper option I dont know how true that is.

Agree on this one mate, been going on in rods for ever, saying he did it on price is a cop out though.

I remember in the early 90's in some magazines there was an xy ute mocked up as a gt with a 350 chev, they'd changed the stripes and put 350 then a bowtie instead of a super roo.

Yeah I was going to say, aren't they're plenty of Ford Hot Rods getting around with Chev & Hemi powerplants? Look at Gary Myer's Mustang for example.

Personally I'm not a fan and I'd rather stick with the one manufacturer.

Each to their own.

Ford T-buckets are always having 350s shoved in them, so why not? IMHO, it does make the car slightly less of a Ford, but it's still looks like a Ford, ergo...

A ford is a ford and to put anything else in it not right and the guy should be hang.

If you buy a ford to do up than use a ford motor or go buy a chev in the first place.

I dunno. Ricer Mustang? At least the XY still has a V8. Even if it is one that chews oil like no tomorrow.

I can't wait till my Clevo is finished because I only live 5mins away from this bloke.
I will try and line up a night at the drags and see how his $5k Chev goes against my $7.5k Clevo.

His logic is right though, he owns a workshop, for the money and what he wants to do (Cricut work) the LS1 + 6 Speed you can't beat.

unbelieveable. But what he did worked cause people are talking about it, its in a magazine and I bet it wins a good few trophies at car shows.

Good on him for trying something different, but shame on him for ruining a good ford.

Nothing against the car, just personally I can't say I like mixing and matching engines with manufacuterers. Ford powered Fords, GM powered GMs etc is how I like it.

Not having seen the car, however, the workmanship on it could be spectacular, so obviously I'm not commenting on that.

I disagree, an XY GT (or rep) is about history and Bathurst, wrong car for this, i can under stand it in a cobra, small car needs the alloy block, the reason people don't mind with 32 Fords etc, is no one is alive to say what it was like back then.
