Default which would cost less to run

hi all,i am thinking of buying a ba xr soon and was woundering if anyone could tell me which model the xr8 or the xr6 turbo would cost the least to run since the xr6 turbo runs on premium unleaded and the xr8 can run on normal unleaded.im just thinking by the end of the week and the diffenance in price between the 2 petrols which one would be cheaper.any help would be great thanks.

yeah, i'm thinking similar... but once the T has been edited it seems to run about 3L/100 km's better than the xr8 but then it also depends on how hard you drive it as it can also use about 4L/100 more than the xr8

I'd run it LPG if you could ....
unless you're a speed freak and need the punch to impress yourself with ??

my old EA got 6km/l
around $30 for 400km
my new EBii goes $77 for 400km
at about 12.8l/100km, 8km/l

The math works out in favour of the XR6T slightly, but the V8 is worth the extra 64 cents in my book...

XR6T 12.3 L/100 km
XR8 13.8 L/100km

PULP $1.44
ULP $1.33

XR6T = (12.3*$1.44) = $17.71/100Km
XR8 = (13.8*$1.33) = $18.35/100Km

My BA XR8 pings under hard acceleration (eg, overtaking) on 91 Octane, and gets better economy using 95 octane premium (I can't find any economy benefit in using 98 octane, apart from maybe giving it a little bit more zing...but that's debateable).

It actually is cheaper to run my XR8 on 95 octane, despite it costing a few more cents per litre as it is about 10% better economy on the highway.

My XR8 hasn't had any pinging problems on unleaded yet. But I don't get out of town much so the fuel is pretty good quality. I was skeptical at first but the PULP does make a difference in performance. I'm running a tank now. Just came out of the maccas drive through and leaned on it hard. Damn I love that boss motor!!!

my opinion is fuel economy should not be the deciding factor in deciding what car you want. which ever car is more econimical it wouldnt matter, as their would be little difference between them.
what about insurance?
anyway, the question you should be asking yourself. do you want a turbo car or a big donk v8.

Default Other running costs

If you are after good ecconomy also look at the other running costs, Rego, Insurance, Servicing, Repairs and posible future mods ( I know this sounds strange but you get used to the power in time and with so many easy power lifting mods around it is hard to resist, the only reason I haven't moded mine yet is the waranty)

It will all add up over the year not just the fuel costs, and they are ruffly on par there.

If fuel economy is going to be the deciding factor, I would go with the turbo 6.
The only benefit of the V8 would be sound and if thats not a concern for you, the 6 will do everything the 8 will do.

I think on balance (with normal driving) the XR6T would have to come out better.

Why would you bother to buy an XR6T or an XR8 if you didnt want some extra power? If you wanted to put a car on gas for that much economy, one would think you would just get an XT or something...

XR6T or XR8 on gas? I must be a speed freak or I must want to impress myself with the extra power, because I wouldnt drive a car on gas in a fit.... :

I know the XR6 N/A's run perfectly on E10 95ron petrol (with no difference in economy). So have you considered the price reduction in running an T or 8 with E10, or has anyone tried it and whats the car run like.

XR6chic - there are new gas systems that do not give any loss in power. So why not have all the power at half the petrol costs? Petrol prices are quite high these days if you have not noticed.

Well some people have taken me the wrong way,but when it comes down to it without the petrol issue i cant decide if i will buy a xr6t or a xr8 and at almost the same price second hand,it makes it harder

You and you only can make that decision. If you do go the V8, use 95PULP or better. You have two great cars to choose from, so good luck. Oh and welcome to the forums.

Having established that there is approx. two fifths of stuff all difference in running an XR6T vs XR8 you're fuel economy concerns should be the last thing to worry about.
My wife and I stressed over the XR6T - XR8 debate before buying our new car late last year.
So we went to the dealers and drove both cars back to back.....
Me, I could have lived with the XR6T, but that bonnet bulge and the sound just got my wifes attention :1syellow1
I could have handled a sequential auto but she wanted a six speed manual.
So theres no prize for guessing who won...
And after six months of ownership every time I drive our XR8, I thank God that she did :eclipsee_ : :eclipsee_ : :eclipsee_

: At the dealership the salesman said to her..
Why dont you like the XR6T? and she turned to him and said "Well to be honest, It just wouldnt feel right walking into Repco and only buying SIX spark plugs" :

Who says the Turbo has to run on premium ? I have been running mine on normal ULP for the last few tanks and it is no different to the Premium I was using and it doesnt ping at all, it is a manual and I constantly rev it then change into the next gear. It just went in for its service and the Ford dealers said it was running perfect not a thing wrong with the girl

That is obviously not a Ford factory gas system? Aftermarket systems (regardless of how good) are not advisable to fit to BAs because the engines are not well set up for them, as with most engines.

I wouldnt fit an aftermarket gas system to any car, let alone a BA. I would just buy a cheaper car to run if I was worried about fuel costs. And it would be a Fiesta or something similar, not a Falcon of any kind.

Apparently the BA XR6T was fine on ULP, but the BF XR6T needs premium, due to some of the engine changes that brought about the slight increases in power and Nm.

Dont forget rego and insurance costs (im sure there are others) and not just fuel when deciding.

End of the day you pay the bills for it - what do YOU want in the driveway really.
