All the new cars will go in to limp home mode if you blow a tail/stop light, this is because of accidents in fog and snow conditions and cars driving with out the necessory rear lights, all Euro cars coming out this year have this "FEATURE", Nissan, Astra, Focus, Volvo, Merc, Mitisbushi, etc also as it has been the law in Europe for some time that if you are pulled over you must be carring a full set of replacement globes and 2 safty vests. it won't be long before it comes in here, so if it is in limp home , go and check your tail lights,

Fine for Europe - bugger all snow here...
Wouldn't this cause more problems and acidents - people stopped on a freeway to change a bulb? |

Not applied to my Territory. I blew a break Light about 6 months ago. I was told during a RBT to get it fixed.
The Only LHMs that I know of is in the Gearbox and Coolant Systems in the 4.0 DVCT engines. I can't remember if the AU had the same 'feature'.

So this thread is a warning not to drive behind new cars? Or only those that don't have working tailights?

I think the ADR's would have something to say about this. You can see it now, accelarating into traffic and a bulb blows and your car dies, and that big semi that you were trying to get out of the way of crushes you and your family in you NEW car. :
I think all they need is a warning light on the dash when one filament goes. My 1982 Subaru had one, when the either of the filaments blew, a sop lamp warning appeared on the dash. Simple and effective. : |

Mate, limp home mode first made its debut in the 4 speed EA2 gearbox. It was designed to keep fluid temperatures from going to extreme, and would rectify itself as soon as the engine coolant and thus transmission fluid came back to within normal operating perameters. It also occurred when there was an electrical fault within the transmission ie, one of the seven solenoids going on the fritz.

Not wanting to hi-jack this thread, but on the subject of brake lights. Is it my imagination or do vehicle bulbs fail more often now than in the past. The amount of cars that I follow with one or both brake lights U/S is unbeleivable.
On a lighter note, I have found that nearly all Volvo's are permanently in limp mode around here. (Automatically goes into limp home mode when hat is placed on head) |

My poor car doesn't understand limp home mode strangely enough, but she had to try to cope last night..
What shouldn't have taken more than an hour & half (hardly any traffic)...took a few hours :( :yeees: |

The light bulb problem seems to be common on many newer cars. I've read somewhere it can be due to insufficient earthing that can lead to frequent globe failures. On my EL I've replaced both headlight bulbs 18 months ago and the front parking light bulbs (EL XR6 they are separate) a year or so prior. I don't recall replacing any tail light or indicator bulbs and the car has reached 113000 kms, and I bought it at 48000 kms. Yet I see many current model cars from many manufacturers with one or both tail lights blown with the high mounted stop light the only one working and many driving around with 1 headlight.
But I think a limp home mode in these events would be more dangerous as in low visibility conditions with one or more lights not working also travelling in limp home mode would be a sitting duck for a high speed rear ender. Another "safety" feature I find annoying is with autos having to be put in park to be started. Fair enough not in drive or reverse, but neutral should be OK. I was driving an auto VP Commy wagon on gas (a loan car) that was well used and driving along a driveway about to reach a main road I lifted off the throttle and it stalled. I had to stop it and put it in park to get it going again.

The advice I received for globes that frequently blow, is to buy the globe from ford. I had a DL that was always blowing its rear left brake light, and I spent countless hours changing the bastard. Seriously, it would blow every 200-1500klms without fail. A mate who was the auto electrical foreman at city ford told me to use the genuine ford globe, as the astar ones are made in taiwan, and the filament is not as good. I took his advice, changed it over and got 70 thousand plus k's out of it.
It's the same as their oil filters. In the 5 litre windsors, the ryco filters would sometimes seperate from the baseplate and dump oil everywhere. I remember a number of EL's had the same problem. Turns out the pressure valve in the filter was rated too high for the loads and would allow oil pressure to build inside the filter to the point of explosive separation. Sometimes genuine ford is really cool.

i was just passing on the information as it happened to a nissan pulsar the other day and when it was enquired why, the reply from Nissan Japan was "oh didn't you know that all new cars made for the world market have this feature". the Fords Focus and Transit etc their PCM's are made in Spain and The volvos is made in Ireland and the rest of the non south Pacific cars are made in Japan of course except those made by the Sweeds. another small bit of trivia is the Transit workshop manuals, the mechanical section is produced in england, and the electrical section is produced in Spain, all with different Acromens or names for the different parts. eg the PCM in england is the Vehicle control Module in Spain, so be preparied to be very confuesed.
