Half the cordials I see on the shelf have had a proportion of the sugar replaced with sweetener. They taste like ****. No wonder noone's buying. I'd happily buy the original sugar-laden formula.

I remember the original Cottee's Passiona, which actually had real passionfruit in it, including the seeds! And it's never been duplicated or equalled since by any other maker.

At any rate, Cottee's has long ceased to exist as a true Aussie brand—it's now owned by the Japanese company Asahi Breweries. Very sad.

Oh well its just a sign of the times.....First Dick Smiths, then Masters and now Cottee's amongst a few other companies aswell thru out the year and then FordAu, and Holden and Toyota last.

Donald Trump is predicting a 'VERY MASSIVE RECESSION' for the U.S.A coming soon so I really dont know how Oz is going to stand up over the next couple of years???

Bloody hell that would'nt have helped at all.

I just bought two bottles of cordial today.

Bought the cheapest that was on the shelf which was Black and Gold brand for $2.20 each.

I only drink it when i'm riding my mountain bike in my back pack so it does'nt matter if its loaded with sugar cos i burn it off anyways.

Afetr reading the OP's article I forgot how much sugar is in Cordial TBH.

I think it is a good thing that buyers are steering away from high sugar contented drinks.....We all need to be healthier.

I remember Bobo cordial, but it may have been a south Aussie thing, not sure. Concentrate came in a glass bottle and you made it up, basically by adding tons of sugar. I was a small kid at the time, but I seem to remember bags and bags of sugar.

I’ll admit I hated Cottees as a kid as I’ve never had a sweet tooth and thought it was vile.

It didn’t stop my mum from always buying it for us though because it was cheap and went a long way.

I refill powerade bottles with the cordial. My teenage kids love them.

It works out cheaper as well.

How can 3/4s of an inch of cordial in a glass then the rest pure water be that high in sugar content?
I know which I prefer the morning after a big night on the turps... And it aint softdrink...

They do, its called soft drink.

This story is click bait, it states the increase in consumption of iced tea and young people avoiding sugar as causes of the decline, which are true, but more to the point, when I was a kid, fizzy drinks were an expensive indulgence that never found their way into our fridge, cordial was in our house then. Today, softies are soo cheap, and are on a lot of dinner tables regularly.
Also, replacing cordial in many cases is the isotonic drinks that weren't around when I was a kid.

I can't remember the exact formula , but in my early teens I took on a summer job with a friend in a cordial factory
What I do remember as it would be something you would never forget . The stainless vat was about 10 feet tall and about the same in diameter . I get the forklift , and drive across a pallet high of sugar in 25kg(can't remember exact size ) bags or the number of bags
I carry each bag up the steps and pour into the vat , the water was feed in , and various other bids , which was handled by the chemist .
The kicker was , in about 1000 liters of what was basically sugar we then poured a container of concentrate fruit juice .
I can't remember the quantity , but if I had to guess it was around 1-2 liters
It blew my mind .
So , yes when you're drinking cordial there is heaps of sugar , more than soft drinks or juice drinks I wouldn't know , but it's scary how much sugar is in cordials

Soft drinks cheap??? WOW, you must live in a different country to me.

I clearly remember a bottle 1.25 litre bottle of coke costing 70 cents, I think they are around 3-4 dollars now in supermarkets. and cans being 45 cents at the servo or take away shop.

People just spend the money on rubbish these days, where as years ago, people would not 'waste' money on buying coke by the gallon, might also have something to do with the Australian Obesity Epidemic.
