Default Mazda to reveal new RX-7

Quote:
The iconic Mazda RX-7 will be born again in November.

The Japanese car maker has confirmed it will showcase a new-age sports car concept at the Tokyo motor show in November, heralding the likely return of the unique rotary engine.

In a brief statement issued today, Mazda has announced the new - and yet to be named - sportscar concept will make its world premiere at the Tokyo show, but has given little else in terms of technical details.

"The design of the sports car concept... is modern but maintains a sense of lineage and authenticity, appearing almost to condense Mazda's entire history of sportscar development into a single model," it claimed in the statement, providing the strongest indication the new-age RX-7 will draw on the success of its rotary-powered predecessors.

Another hint is that - among the 14 models on display on its show stand - an original Cosmo Sport will be there to "compliment a heritage display showing Mazda's history of convention-defying engineering." The Cosmo Sport was the company's first rotary-powered two-door sports car.

The brand also issued a dark-tinted teaser image that showcases the outline of the two-door body, which features a classic long-bonnet, swooping roofline and short hatchback in its proportions.

It is expected that the new-age RX-7 will borrow its rear-drive underpinnings from the latest MX-5 roadster, and that its rotary engine could feature a hybrid assistance system to ensure it meets emission regulations and offers the performance characteristics necessary for a sports car.

I still look at FD RX7s and think what a timeless design. Beautiful.
Can only hope they recreate something similar for the 21st century.

Awesome!

Although to save costs I dont know why they dont just make a fixed roof MX5 and put the rotary in that.

edit: spas...I didnt read it in full..but I was atleast on track.

Those drawings are hideous. If this car is real I hope it looks better than that.

Well an MX based RX would have to be a better idea than an RX based MX.

I wonder if hybrid assistance would see it go AWD?

Urgh, horrible.

Love the look of the last few RX7 models and hoping the new one looks as good as they did.

ND MX-5 front, Mazda 3/6 side and roofline, RX-8 rear.
Mish-mash of Mazda's current design language?

MX-5 is a 2-seat roadster
RX-7 was a 2+2 coupe with suicide doors

But I don't disagree with a LS V8 or rotary transplant in an MX-5.

It'll be ugly, over complicated (like very other new car) and won't do the nameplate justice.

Unfortunately I agree, it needs curves like the last one.

RX7 never had suicide doors, that was only ever RX8

Those Ferrari F430 style of taillights look a little out of place and the exhaust outlets are to widely spaced in my mind but I like the look of the rest of the car.

Just as long as their new Skyactive R ****el engines don't need to be rebuilt so often like their 13Bs then we have a winner.

Reminds me of the Mercedes gullwings and the more recent AMG GT coupe.
Mazda really do know how to style their cars well even the ones in production.
I can't say the same for Toyota except their 86.

I'd buy one if it was reasonably priced.

Probably will be turbo to meet emissions. Cant see NA meeting Euro 5 as with the RX8.

Might need to be turbo just to be fast enough. Unless it's going to be incredibly light, a ~200kw engine won't be enough. Last I heard Mazda were still working on a twin rotor engine but had increased displacement to 1.5l.

I believe it's a 1.6 turbo hybrid.

Our RX8 was an awesome car, only remotely practical rear wheel drive affordable performance sportscar on the market at the time really.

Always wished it had a latest generation conventional engine though, like ultra high performance latest tech four or five cylinder engine married to the RX8 package would be so, so sweet.
