Seen a whole lot of these pop up lately. It has the bodywork contemporary of an XD Falcon, with 2000-something headlights attached to the front. Are these seriously an unchanged vehicle from 30 years ago still in production, with about $100k in R&D spent on it, or did Toyota do a very convincing retro? Wonder if the Aussie motor industry shouldnt have bothered **** farting around with updates and R&D, if people are willing to buy a 30 year old design based on reputation. Imagine how much money they could have saved if they just kept making EF falcons , Holden Kingswoods and just tacked a new face onto it every now and then. I think they're largely unchanged over the 30-odd years...unlike the Corolla, which only has its name left.
They did make a retro Landcruiser-looking thing, looks like its back-end has been sat on. |

Imagine if Ford still made and sold these new. Would be the automotive equivalent to the toyota and probably be as durable and reliable |

Ford should just make XYs with the Miami V8.
Probably be the best selling car in Australia.

The 76 series is a very tough and capable truck.
Turbo diesel V8. They are a damn good bit of kit. |

There's something nice about seeing exactly the same tough cab welding, roof rails, "Arakawa Auto body" in the new car and in the HJ60 that was loved and worked with for so long. You just know it's going to last, as you put one through so much work and the new one's built the same.
As for a new Kingswood, or a new XY, where do I sign? Instant purchase. As my youngest says, if you could have the old styling, with the airbags and modern safety/suspension/motors, that would be the best of all.

I have a 76 series, damn good offroad with the factory lockers but comfort on long trips is lacking. Overpriced too but that's Toyota for you. The basic shape is the same as when the 70 series first came out in 1985, but they've updated engines, changed the front end in 2007 to accomodate the V8 motor and changed the dash for airbags in 2009. Oh and put ABS in from 2012 on.

One of my mates dads has bought a new cruiser ute every 4 years since 1985. Base model diesel every time. He ordered the 2010 update but canceled his order due to the changes dash and airbags. The old farmer isn't a fan of change. Just had his 2006 repainted and motor gearbox and diff rebuilt. Not bad for a ute with 550000 hard km's

I'd like to get my hands on one to make it go faster, they seem to be very underrated from factory with only like 450nm torque.
For something with a 4.5L TDV8 there has to be much more hiding in there waiting to come out. |

I quite like them, nice to drive in a tractor sort of way. Sit very high with a long throw gearshift and and the laziest engine I've ever driven.
Can pull a fair bit of power out of them with the right mods, and I don't know if anything comes close offroad besides maybe a Wrangler. But for the same price as a stock 70 you can have a Ranger plus 10 grand of mods taking it to 180+rwkw, so I know which I'd have. |

Don't forget to a single cab ranger 4x4 almost has twice the load capacity of a cruiser....
750kg payload on the v8's is a bit dismal... |

You're right, but I don't expect Toyota to bring much more life into that engine, and it will probably not meet emissions standards much longer. Rumors suggest that the Tundra may be getting the same Cummins 5.0 the Titan is getting. If that is the case, I wouldn't expect Toyota to invest any more into their 4.5. I suspect Toyota derated the 4.5 in the 70 series is because the driveline components couldn't handle much more torque. People often confuse rugged with heavy duty, and will probably disagree with me on that. I have tried to find the axle and transmission specs on them before, but couldn't.

its a first generation Landcruiser Prado made into a modern car, NZ is full of them but i think they date back to the early 90's

Imagine the **** the engineer who came up with the idea of putting a V8 in those got into - LOL
If you look from the back to the front along the side you will see that the front wheels have a wider track than the back wheels, to make room for the V8 they had to spread the front end, what a **** up - LOL

And the alternator is at the bottom so they fill up with mud and water, have the same shirty injector issues as hilux and prado

I saw the editorial on said Landcruiser about six months ago Iam sure it was carsales.com Toyota were bringing it back from the grave, bigger engine, brakes air con all the extras

These V8's are not reliable, i have a few mates that have had big issues with them. Also extremely overpriced, you think Ford have crazy fanboys, have you fellas met a cruiser fanboy before, the worst kind out there.
People saying they are extremely capable 4x4's are kidding themselves, they spin the rear wheels in an instant and blow LSD's regularly. Im yet to have one finish a trip when we go away on boys weekends camping and doing serious offroad stuff. I've just copied this post from another thread i posted in My mate has the workmate and offroad it is useless. He has also had nothing but trouble with it. Hes had it 5 years and it has 70,000km and hes just had to spend $5000 on the injectors. Not to mention the two diffs he had done under warranty and another out of warranty. It's worked on a cattle property but these are landcruisers supposedly built for these conditions. $70,000 for a vehicle with mud terrains that gets bogged more than a navara D22 that is stock with highway tyres on. Sure its all about the driving but even i gave it a go in the VIC high country and the thing is useless, spins the back wheels everywhere you go, even with weight in the back. Hopped back into my GQ patrol and vowed never to get back into a landcruiser ute again. The most overated and expensive 4x4 i know. Last edited by fordomatic; 17-02-2015 at 10:11 PM. |

Troopies doing that are responsible for a fair chunk of the NT road toll every year.. Overloaded with locals, nobody wearing seatbelts, and doing 130 in something that can't handle a swerve at 70 tends to be a bad situation.

The Mercedes G series has used virtually the same styling for the last 35 years, and is quite possibly the most expensive ugly 4wd around
