Default NSW Police's new car: Porsche Panamera

http://news.ninemsn.com.au/glancevie...porsche.glance

Quote:
NSW Police have been given a luxury upgrade after Porsche decided to craft them a new police car.

The new car, a Porsche Panamera Sedan, is marked with the usual blue and white police decals and comes complete with flashing lights and siren.

Although the car can reach speeds of 259km/h, it will not be used to chase criminals but instead be used as a promotional tool.

NSW Police are the first force in Australia to get a Porsche included in their fleet of Holden Commodores and Ford Falcons.

What promotions are they going to do with it.

Seems totally out of whack with the speed kills mantra that they keep chanting.

At a time when they are cutting funding from education, I really hope it is some kind of leased donation from Porsche and that they didn't spend a cent on that stupid thing.

Considering a pursuit XR6T would destroy it in a straight line, I fail to see your point? (the Porsche is only the V6 model )
An EcoLpi would probably beat it

Taken directly from the Police' Fb page

" The Harbourside Local Area command has been kindly donated a 2012 Porsche Panamera from Porsche Australia for a 12 month Period. This includes insurance, registration servicing and maintenance. I must stress this is at no cost to the taxpayers of New South Wales.

The car is to be used for community engagement events and locals fairs within the Harbourside Local Area Command and will on occasions be loaned to other commands for similar such events

The uniqueness of the vehicle is in short an “ice breaker” with local kids, youth groups and those that for the most part do not have a positive interaction with the Police. It is the hope that when engaging people about the car it will give us the ability to talk with them about other concerns or issues they may have and help foster a closer relationship between the Police and our local community.

The Porsche will be attending one of the greatest race tracks in the world in Bathurst this coming October to help celebrate the 150th year of Policing in NSW. Keep a look out for it around the Harbourside Local area command with our first event being the Crows Nest fair on the 21st October 2012.

If you see the car by all means come and say hello!"

If it's not being used for typical Police work, then there is no need for a four-door car, and a 911 is a much better conversation starter.

(secretly I like the look of the Panamera... look great in the metal)

Yeah I know, I think it's just mainly to win over kids. I know which I'd rather see in relation to Porshe v Holden v Ford. While it is only for promotion, it will definatly get the attention it's looking for

I agree. It's a good idea if that's what their main target is. People see HSVs and FPVs on the road everyday, but if you saw a Porsche (not matter how ugly) it will turn heads.
Being donated by Porsche means I didn't pay a cent towards it so I'm cool with it lol

It is designed to draw interest. Whether good or bad, and get people coming upto the cops in the street with it to talk to them about what it is and policing in general. It is a community engagement tool and judging by the amount of stir it has already caused by these few posts, it is working as intended.

Hmmm, message sent with this initiative is going to be interpreted with a degree of negativity I'm afraid, which is a shame.

Wonder if it would have soothed the crowd of habibs in Sydney into putting down their bottles and hate banners and had them disperse without riotous behaviour?

Bet old mate with the milk crate would have taken to this car with even more vigour than he did the commodore highway car.

Wow, if its on their fb page it must be true....

No sensible person believes government spin. The taxpayer will have paid for this in some way or the other: just like they did with the 'promotional' Lotus Exige a few years ago. It's called creative accounting...

Like some others on here have pointed out, I'd like top cop Commisioner Scipione to justify how having a '259kmh' Porsche fits in with the government's 'speed kills' mantra (cops struggle not to prang the Flacon/Commodores they have).... Surely a more appropriate car to send sucha safety message would be a Chinese Cherry?

I'm also wondering which top cop gets to drive this around at our expense for the year? 'Promotional?' Sure.

THe lambo wouldn't cost near as much there, as it does here. As someone has already stated, would be little/no difference as a Commonwhore/Falcon

Sooo if it were a Falcon GT would you also have the same thoughts?
On your train of thought regarding the speed kills then why run F6s, XR6Ts, etc. I think they should be scrapped as well, no need for them, speed kills.

People need to relax a little, Porsche provided the car to NSW Police, it's all a bit of fun.

Not at all.

I do hate waste of taxpayers money. Like others on here have said there's no such thing as a free lunch. On top of this a Porsche is a stupid car to use if indeed it is a promotional tool as it contradicts the governments speed kills mantra.

It's also poor timing from a govt. who has just cut billions from education and health.

An exs father used to be a senior cop in the nsw force... The perks they got (incl. the pool of lease cars at their disposal for personal use) had to be seen to be believed...

There's a huge difference between a Porsche and a Falcon turbo. In addition, Ford turbos and Holden SSs aren't being used as promotional vehicles like this Porsche supposedly is.

I don't think anyone has an issue with any of the front line police - look at the job they did in Sydney last weekend with the riots. Just amazing.

The issue people have is with the management of the force, both at the senior level and then in government: the massive waste of taxpayer dollars - of which this Porsche is just an example of (no free lunch remember).

I'm sure the Porsche will really enhance relations when driving through low socio-economic areas in Sydney....

not really 'a bit of fun'...
