The start of the APSA Pro Street Series for 2012 will begin in Melbourne, at what has been called in the past, “the home of Pro Street”. Due to popular demand and racers requesting a points round in VIC, APSA sponsors and Calder Park Raceway are happy to bring Pro Street back to VIC here at Calder Park on 18th February 2012. Now fans can enjoy these Street Style animals entertaining the masses, as they battle it out to see who is king or queen of their Pro Street class. The different categories offered by an APSA shootout have an interesting variety of styles, with racers building street cars to comply with a set of rules setup for their respective class. To mention some, 10.5 Outlaw, Pro Street, Mod Street, Radial, True Street and DYO. There are wars going on inside all the ranks and these beefs can vary from power adders (Turbo vs. Nitros vs. Blown). to manufacturers (Ford vs. Holden) and this type of heads up racing can even get personal between racers. Pro Street highlights for this meeting will be as follows: True Street.. The true street class has become very popular and in turn one of the most competitive classes in Pro Street racing. This meeting will offer two of the fastest true street racers in the country, Melbourne’s own no1 Tony Bonikos’ big block HJ Sedan vs. Qld’s Janelle Scott, running a small block chev powered hatch back. Nick’s car is an awesome combo with more than enough power to run mid nines but Janelle’s, precise driving skills and very stout combo, has pushed her to the national number two spot and won her the 2011 championship… don’t be fooled by this girl racer guys, she can cut fast lights and is as serious as the fastest and the best in the True Street class. We have a ten car field ready to race at Calder for this meeting, so get ready to watch some very competitive close racing.. Modified Street.. Next battle occurring will be the fight to catch Ali Saad’s number one 7.66 elapsed time for the Mod Street NA class. Although weights have been put up to bring parity into the class, the crazy Capri’s of Tony Cusolito and Danny Sharbon have more than enough hp to catch that time. But what makes this chase even more interesting is that these guys are personal rivals and have very similar combos; being very light weight over cubed Chev powered Ford Capris, very similar in build and sixty foot times, as well. This battle will be a good one to keep an eye out for, as these guy wrestle with these grossly over powered standard suspension and small tyred street style cars… Who will win?, and in the chase who will wheel stand or shred tyres and open up a hole for other racers in the ranks to capitalise on? Pro Street Blown.. The fight in Pro Street blown for the illusive six second pass is on for a couple of these guys. Ford Vs Holden and friend vs. friend. Locals, Peter Pisalidis and Dominic Luppino both have the power and goods to dish out six second passes at this meeting. Peter’s Chev powered Turbo Camaro ran a bottom seven second pass in testing and he was unhappy with a result that most would wish for! He is on a mission and he will be up against Ford man Dom Luppino with his Twin Turbo big block, which is rumoured to have 2800HP and has already done a six second pass. As these guys push, all sorts of mayhem can occur, opening up chances for the rest of the field. These top runners will be pushing for glory, wrestling with massive amounts of HP, traction issues, and wheels, trying to shoot for the sky at three quarter track.…. 10.5 Outlaw.. The 10.5 Outlaw’s official point’s series is also starting right here at Calder on Feb 18th. 10.5 Outlaw is set to be one of the most exciting classes to watch as racers are pumping anything up to 3000hp through 10.5W rated tyres. This can only spell excitement as these guys challenge themselves and run to see who can get the power down on this tyre. The 10.5 class has already got some great entrants, with racers such as the awesome machine of Tristian Ockers; a Blown injected Ford Capri and George Bastiras’s show winning Shotgun Falcon. Gorgeous high powered machines all running on one evening factor, a 10.5 inch tyre. Also Staunch Racing’s, Johnny Wilson and Simon Kryger will be in the 10.5 field with the awesome 69 Camaro just imported from the states. It boasts an 800ci quad nitrous kit Big Block, built by TRE engines in the states. With this Combo the guys are chasing the title of “Fastest Nitrous 10.5 Outlaw car in the World!!!!” Staunch Racing will debut right here at Calder Park Feb 18th. South Australian drag racing legend George Bastiras is confirmed to line up in the FUCHS Shootout next month! The super tough twin turbo Ford Futura with 604 cubes and 1800 RWHP, will certainly be a big hit with the local Ford fans. TOP FUEL Calder Park would like to welcome in February, 4 of Australia's fastest to take part in the Fuchs Triple Crown Final. They are Damien Harris, Darren Difilippo, Phil Lamattina and Darren Morgan. With all 4 of them set to run the newly formatted 1,000ft as introduced in the United States, it will add a safer aspect to top fuel and funny cars that Calder is sure will catch on across the rest of the country. PRO STOCK Pro Stock legend from Kew Automotive, Bill Kotsias will be bringing down his impressive red Pro Stock Pontiac GTO which will be out to add more muscle to a rapidly expanding line up in this years biggest race event at Calder Park. Central Victorian drag racing team Soldatos Motorsport is the latest addition to the growing field of Pro Stock cars set to race at the Fuchs Triple Crown Final at Calder Park Raceway on November 19. The Pontiac GTO, driven by Chris Soldatos, will race against fellow Victorian Pro Stock drivers Bill Kotsias, Nick Xerakis and Richard Caval. After running a personal best of 7.04 seconds at a recent event at Sydney Dragway, the Castlemaine based team is looking forward to putting on a show at their home track. “To have the opportunity to go head-to-head against some of the best Pro Stock racers in Australia, and to do it on our hometrack is something we are really looking forward to” team member Tim Soldatos said. I spent a full 16 hours out there yesterday! I had mates running in True Street so I was in as crew. From a spectator angle it was a pretty good day with lots going on. There was a little bit much down time, but if its in the name of track safety its worth the wait. For a Melbourne crowd who only get to see the big names on TV it was a great chance to see the Top fuel teams stripping down and rebuilding an engine first hand. When the Rocket Crew and the Top Fuellers did their Night runs the crowd went Ballastic. Bob Jane was getting around all day to witness this, even being at the Trophy presentation around midnight. We need more of this!

from what i have heard, the event was a success and a huge crowd attended, the VIC guys really come out for the events.
some photo's and updates courtesy of fullboost.com.au Gasrite Vito Van first passes on the bottle yeiled an impressive 8.37/169. The FX Files way cool twin turbo V8 Holden was lapping in the 8.6-second range at around 165mph on big drag radials. Pistol Petes turbo SBC powered Camaro - 7.18/206 Bullivant Racing twin turbo Torana stepped up going 8.12/170 Luppino big block Mustang - first up 7.30/192 Loved this Dandy Engines Iroc driven by Frank Marchese. Mid 8s at 160+mph. Tim's twin turbo LS1 Ute improved to an 8.73/160 still using an IRS rear end. Matt's VK doing it for the Holden fans - Try 8.98 at 151mph! 9.2s on drag radials aspirated first time out. Congrats to Jason who ran his first nine - 9.99/137 from his wicked 1930 Ford. Danny Sharban a P.B in Mod Street unblown - 7.76/178 Great to see some TF's in action in Melbourne. The new Kryger / Wilson entry in 10.5W is a wild looking machine. The guys went 7.0 at 203mph on Friday night. We have the run on video but unfortunately there is no audio, we will put it up if people still want to see it. Back in action and mid 9s as usual A couple of very fast Centura's of Andrew and Milan's both very different machines. Andrew's SPP blue Centura shows you don't need a late model Jap engine to get a six cylinder up and going. The car ran hard all day, Andrew going a couple of 8.3s at 160+mph from the old school 265ci Hemi turbo six. Congrats mate that is one awesome and very unique car you've built. Milan's Centura is very different but VERY fast powered by a Toyota 2JZ engine. The car went 8.53 at 161mph on 275 drag radials on E85. Great to see a turbo six entered in Pro Street. Kristian's Supra was in the 7s again. Mick Voase was in the 7.8 - 7.9 range all day, very consistent runner. George Bastiras' Falcon Futura won the 10.5W class going mutiple passes in the high 7-second range. A superbly built vehicle up close. [B] |

Hi all, Well round one is done and we had some fantasic fields and fantastic Cars. The track ended up getting what looked like close to 10,000 people and as for exposure and pulling the crowds it looked like it was all there. In saying that APSA walked away from Calder Park disappointed with the lack of organisation and lack of professionalism dispalyed by track management. We are not being critical but just stating facts. We lost one qualifer and what was worse due to terrible time management we also lost the third round of racing making us have to run finals Prematurely upsetting many of our racers. The selection of Winners and runners up at this meeting was based on the fasted two cars with most wins and this had to be called early, stopping some racers the chance to get to the finals. To those members all we can do is apologise and we can assure you that sort of thing will not happen at Willowbank or Sydney dragway... The APSA side of the event was run perfectly, with our officials seading cars accurately and we showed how professional and organized our Pro Street Racers were. It was a credit to all those that entered and APSA aplauds you for being so professional and for a spectacular display of some of the pretiest, most powerful street cars in Australia. Well done guys,. The comradery amongst our members at this event was amazing and all 70 plus of our Pro Street racers worked great together, supporting each other, helping out in the pits with parts, tools and other assistance. It was truely a great racing atmosphere and what APSA is about. We want to thanks our officials that worked tirelessly all day seeding the cars and putting up with the minor few complainers. Craig Hewitt, Big Steve Francis, Andrew Bonwick what a team and thankyou so much. Also thanks to Pazzo for maning the mercandise stand with the Promo girl....We now know how to get the best of him. APSA wants to thank the many small businesses that see the value and potential of sponsoring Pro Street and APSA, there names are on the results next to their respective sponsored class, we appreciate the support and will continue to push your product throughout the season. Lastly and most importantly we want to thank you the racers and members that support. Without you guys APSA is nothing and as Idris Demaj said at the track we are a big part and the main people behind drag racing in Australia, not just the big purpose built drag car teams, but also the battling racers that put their heart and soul into these Crazy fast, Pro street, DYO and Nostalgia, cars (As well as Bike Classes). We pay for tracks to hold these meetings. This is why, from the slowest to the fastest, APSA acknowledges all. Thankyou to the Victorians that supported us and attended and APSA will find a way to bring another Pro Street meet to Victoria and we listen to what the racers want, but unfortunately at this stage we feel it won't be back at Calder Park. Many racers were angry at the way it finished. The cancelling of the third round wasn't communicated to the racers. They just called up all finalists to the lanes but nobody knew who was in the finals. In the end everyone towed up there and much discussion was had.
Interesting to note the APSA saying they probably won't be back at calder. Can't blame them, calder has always been bush league. Poorly run meetings, delays for no reason, pitting debacle, start line/staging congestion, the list goes on. Maybe it is better from a spectator point of view? I also think the APSA need to contain the turbo cars or risk losing the supercharged and nitrous racers. The quickest turbo cars are so far ahead its ridiculous. Maybe 100-200lbs depending on capacity? There is already an exodus from some Pro Street classes in the USA for this reason. Also a set of scales might correct some of the times. This wasn't enforced at calder but might be different at other tracks On a positive note the track was the best it has been for years. Good to see bob pony up for some track prep. |

the rules are fair, the brothers Capri is number 10 in MSB, has a 240ci V8 with twin 62mm turbo's weighs 3100lbs, is it fair he be slugged 100-200lbs more? when he is racing against 600ci+ NOS cars, 400ci+ twin 70mm turbo cars. funny thing is minimum weight for MSB is 2800lbs, i don't think any of the turbo cars are under 3000lbs anyway. so really they are already getting a 200lb penalty |

The car counts are down because the non turbo guys can't keep up. Some choose to build new combos, some walk away. Diversity is the key to Pro Streets success. Watching all the different combos go heads up will keep fans and racers coming back. How it is managed will be interesting to watch. Another thing APSA need to harness is the fact quite a few racers are sick of the ANDRA system and looking to race elsewhere. As far as your brothers car goes, if he chooses to race over the weight break then so be it. It only reinforces my argument that the turbo cars need to be reigned in. Like I said earlier, they need to start weighing every car before they start racing. Your brother might jump up a few places i think. Some of those top ten lists look a bit suss to me. |

put it this way, APSA delegates tried to put rules on Outlaw 10.5, they allowed the Outlaw 10.5 drivers to vote. you know what the drivers voted on? not just the majority but every single driver there that day (was like 20) agreed on only rules in Outlaw 10.5, just 10.5W tyres and 2 doors had the rules went ahead, Staunch's 864ci quad NOS sytem setup that is capable of making 3000hp+ would have to weigh 2600lbs, yet my 281ci with 76mm turbo's (yes less than 1/3rd the cube) i might make 2200hp on a good day would have had to weigh 2900lbs. sometimes no rules or very relaxed rules are better they are trying to keep the rules simple, start doing weight breaks for this n that it gets complicated. the parity comes in the form of the forced induction application in PSB and the other classes 6.1 Roots type Superchargers are limited to a 14:71 high helix with an inside case length of 19” or smaller. Screw (PSI) or Whipple type Superchargers not permitted. 6.2 Single centrifugal superchargers are permitted with a maximum inlet hose diameter of 6.05in and maximum discharge hose diameter of 4.00in (e.g. Procharger F-3R-139). 6.3 Single turbochargers are restricted to maximum size of 101mm/3.976” inducer diameter (tip-to-tip) at the point where the edge of the compressor wheel meets the inlet housing and must be of conventional impeller and housing design (non-clipped) 6.4 Dual turbochargers are limited to a maximum size of 81.8mm/3.221” inducer diameter (tip-to-tip) at the point where the compressor wheel meets the inlet housing and must be of conventional impeller and housing design (non-clipped). they roughly all make the same HP. if your a smaller engine throw more boost into it the majority of racers are happy to just get out there and have some fun. they know they will never be number 1 but they go out to support the organisation and drag racing in general. in regards to ANDRA rules, the best tracks in Australia are all ANDRA sanctioned. where would u race in Sydney? just look at the NHRA rules for Pro Mod every year they have changed for the turbo cars, more weight, smaller turbos yet you know what, the turbo cars keep finding a way to come out on top. in the APSA their is now pretty much a class for everything. trust me we don't race the car overweight cos we want to we do it because we have to, it's impossible to get the car anywhere near the minimum weight even without a driver in we are happy to plod along as it is, we know we will never be number 1 in MSB but we gonna have a hell of alot of fun trust me they weigh and enforce the rules big time. cars are weighed during scrutineering and also checked. if a record is made, they are weighed again. last year in Sydney when Pazzo's Cortina took out number 1 in MSB the car was checked and weighed not once, not twice but 3 times. if anyone thinks a car is not legal for the class they can also make a protest. |

yeah it was out Wednesday they were doing a little half track testing and 60's, went a 1.11 best 60' at WSID.

The great thing about entering the Pro street shoot outs, is that its a Chicago style shoot out, heads up, and no dial your own. So your guaranteed X amount of runs, and you can run as fast as you can with out the worry of braking out.
We towed over from S.A. with the aim of upping the PB from last year. And we did, 8.5 @163, red HQ 2 door Monaro, 3500 lbs, 28x 10.5 tyre, 622 ci, single four barrel. And as luck would have it, a couple of heavy hitters didnt show, a couple broke, and we ended up in the final. Ended up with the runners up trophy and a $500 cheque in modified street unblown We know we are no chance against the Capri's/Torana's, but we dont care. We are out there trying to get the most out of the Monaro, and this style of racing allows you to go as hard and as fast as you can. |
