THE Western Australian construction union has hit out at a ban on building workers eating ham sandwiches and meat pies at the building site of a $70 million mega-mansion.

Tradesmen and labourers working on the property have been told by Indian-born billionaire Pankaj Oswal and his socialite wife Radhika, that any food containing meat must not be consumed on the site.

Once complete, the $70 million s Taj-on-Swan mansion will be the biggest home in the country, on the most expensive block of land. It is located in the exclusive suburb of Peppermint Grove in Perth.

Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union Western Australian assistant secretary Joe McDonald said the ban was "absolutely wrong".

"She still wants them to build her $70 million mansion, but she's telling them what they're going to eat . . . it's wrong," he said.

"I respect everybody's right to practise their religion, but I totally disagree with anyone forcing it on others.

"That has caused more wars and destruction throughout the world than anything else I know of.

"If people are working on the job and they want to have a ham sandwich or a bacon and egg sandwich, they should have one."

Workers on the site yesterday said there was one small shed at the bottom of the site which they were allowed to eat meat in.

A source close to the Oswals, who did not want to be named, said some workers had continued to eat meat on the site "just to spite them".

Mr Oswal, who is in New York this week helping Mrs Oswal prepare for the launch of her vegetarian fast-food chain, Otarian, defended the meat ban, saying "This is our home".

Mrs Oswal has previously accused the meat industry of "raping the earth".

"Meat eating is creating bad karma and you are also creating a vicious cycle," she said.

"It's destroying us environmentally, economically and socially. I'm putting my money where my mouth is. I've always been a vegetarian so I have always felt strongly about it.

"First, because of religious reasons, but then later because I realised the greater good associated with it."

The house, expected to be finished at the end of 2011, will have a gymnasium the size of a regular Perth house, a beauty salon, an observatory, parking for 17 cars and a swimming pool 10 times bigger than the average back yard.

Your intolerance of what they ask to occur on their own property is equally as bigoted as them supposedly forcing their beliefs upon you.

At the end of the day, the contractor could supply a place off site for the workers to eat.
No doubt the construction will either cost them more, or take longer.

They aren't forcing their religion upon anyone, just asking people to respect it while on their property.

utterly disgusting because they are such hypocrites and think their ******** dont smell... that's why i think it's disgusting, if they could come up with a good reason such as, oh they are leaving meat pie rappers everywhere, or its damaging something then i could understand that, but there is not 1 real reason why they are demanding it other then it is against their beliefs...

As for the thread title, a lot of events going on in Australia are utterly disgusting, maybe we can just make this thread for any Australian event that is utterly disgusting?

But why are you so discusted? It's thier land, they have the right to ask the builders not to eat on their land.

To them, it's no different to being asked not to smoke at someones house, being asked to take your shoes off before walking on the new carpet, being asked not to swear infront of the kids at a BBQ..

Personally, I'd have said 'no problem' to the client. This would have been followed by I hope you realize the job will take slighty longer, and slightly increase the final invoice or whatever. I'd then keep a cut for myself and share the rest with all the workers who will be inconvineanced.



However, I must say the client's whole attitude is very un-Australian and it always makes me wonder why these types of people ever leave the motherland in the first place.

they aren't even there!!! they are no where near the house!!! that what i mean, smoking leaves a smell a residue taking your shoes off helps prevent staining the carpet, eating a meat pie for lunch does... umm??? i don't know i cant think of anything especially at a construction site.

And the problem is. He is employing these builders to do a job. If his rules are no meat, then you either respect his wishes, or find another job.

We had a ban on eating fish products at work, because someone in the office had bad allergic reactions to the smell. Should we have said to them, too bad, we will eat a tuna sandwich, because it unAustralian otherwise?

Time people started to respect others points of views, beliefs and customs. It's not that hard. Time to get off your perch for once

Being against their beliefs, isn't that enough? It's their property, I'd like to think I'm able to stop people doing something on my property if it were offending me. You don't have to agree with it and if you're a worker there, you can tell them to sod off and not work on their mega-mansion..

Now, if they were to say that during the period of construction of their property, you are forbidden to eat any meat products whatsoever then you may have a point - though it still wouldn't be utterly disgusting.

Clients are not permitted to enter a building site without supervision, the trades people are within their rights to order them to leave if they do so.

Unless the clients stipulated this "no meat" clause in the contract they have no right to demand it.

The building site is under the control and supervision of the builder until the final payment has been made and the job is handed over.
