Righto, this isn't me having a sook about the new restrictions, so before you all flame and riot up in arms about "Just put up with it" "All P-platers are dangerous drivers" "P plater stole my soul" etc etc just read.
So we all know about the new V8 restrictions, there's also a rule about performance modifications, does that include an engine transplant? Example, going from a 8 cyl to a 6 cyl engine so I can actually drive the car in question? Apart from engineers cert, would this be in breach of restrictions? Car in question is a Ford F150, so I won't be breaking any land speed records. There seems to be a massive gray area with knowing what you can and cant do. Thanks.

It'll be handy for work, smaller utes like the Ford Courier diesel we use for hauling around TVs, we can only fit twelve 51CM CRT TVs on it at once in their boxes and that takes up the entire tray, more if we stack them on each other but that's a bit risky, when you have large numbers of TVs to move (around 80) it gets a bit tedious and wastes resources which can be used elsewhere.
Thanks for the advice.

Sorry but these new restrictions are going a bit far. So now its illegal to drive an F100 with a 302 clevo along with say a ZJ Fairlane with a 302 clevo but legal to drive the new FG falcon I6!!! I know the FG with an I6 would have alot more power than the other 2 tanks mentioned..... Geee my EL I6 Fairmont ghia has more power than my old ZJ V8 on gas and petrol. What happened to the power to weight ratio laws?

I have had to deal with this problem first hand as I am only 19 i was buildind a 1937 pick-up for myself with a 302 clevo in mind uptill these p plate laws came about so it is now being built with a 4.0l out of a Ed you cant modify the engine but you can change what car its in and if you put it into a car that never had it in the first place vic roads can't say what is standard and whats not so thats when it falls on the power to weight ratio

im a p plater from victoria, and what i understood from the new law was that it depends on power to weight, so u can still drive a v8 if it is under 125kws per tonne

before july 07: power to weight after july 07: the rule is no mod's to improve performance incl. lowering : but basically no v8's no turbo's (except crappy daihatsu fwd's or something like that) no high-powered 6's (porsche etc??)

I think that you may very well be granted an exemption by Vicroads for the fact that it is a F truck and it is used for work.

Basically there are 2 sets of rules depending on when you got your licence:
Before 1 July 07
That said, I think you would be very unlucky to be pulled up in a 6CYL F-Truck and done for being a hoon or whatever the label is nowadays. If your concerns are with having it registered after being engineered and whatnot, I think the exemption form should keep the vicroads vultures at bay should they make a fuss about it. (keep in mind all this only applies if you got your Ps after July 07. If you got them before then, your only concern is getting it engineered) |

i dont understand how P-platers can afford these flash powerful cars?! (im talking about teenage p platers.) when i got my license in 2003 the best i could afford was a Toyota Corona CS-X. and i was working like a dog as well as doing year 12... maybe im just jealous.
Though, how long are p plates required to be held for these days? i had mine for two years.

Here in NSW p platers must hold them for 3 years. 1 year on red and 2 years on green.
Laws also state p platers before a certain date are allowed to drive v8s etc but if you got your license after the date you can't.
