I had a 1979 VB SL/e 310 'ten pack' stolen and a very nice base VB SL/e. Gone elsewhere I bet. The VB had 'ViN' number on front radiator support ...replaced by VC suspension tower.

Gone in 60 seconds. Fords / Torana's / Brock's / ...old school but as the Subaru DOT technology worked out?

You need someone experienced in that particular model to detect the variations that will indicate tampering.

Data-dot is only worthwhile if you have the equipment to view the code, and cross-reference it. If the part is a repainted panel, then what point is a data-dot? The only benefit is if one gets missed, and they somehow get the car inspected by the police, that they find it.

Rebirthing still goes on with relatively modern cars as well, but not as much as it used to, as it's a far more complex process with modern cars & government data systems. The ways of catching them out have changed to include "electroonic" identification - serial numbers on things like airbags.
