Angry Barina Catches on Fire on Bruce Highway

DRIVERS on the Bruce Highway were shocked when a car exploded into flame on Sunday afternoon.

A Queensland Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said firefighters received several calls about the fire at 4.46pm Sunday.

“We got multiple 000 calls because obviously a lot of people were driving past on the highway and it looked very bad,” the spokeswoman said.

“The car was a Barina which caught fire just around the corner from the Ettamogah Pub.”

The spokeswoman said by the time crews arrived at the scene the fire had spread to grass nearby.

“There was a small explosion that caused a blaze which spread very quickly,” she said.

“No one was in the car at the time and no one was hurt.”

Witness Venetta Little said she saw people pulling back before the car exploded.

“We saw them move and then suddenly there was this explosion we could see from a while away,” she said.

“I was surprised how calm everyone was, no one was frantic or running around, so I guess that was a good sign."

I once drove past a courier van on fire on the freeway near Lara, the heat being pumped out from the fire as I drove past at 80 km/h was a surprise.

In "the old days" get a fuel leak up near the engine bay, and fuel might dribble here and there, possibly spray a bit from a split.

Have a fuel leak under the bonnet now with really high pressure petrol systems to suit EFI, and you fill the engine bay with a fog of fuel in no time.
Also underneath the car is a lovely red hot catalytic converter, and rural fire brigades still have to keep warning people if they break down on the highway, for christs sake don't park on long dry grass. The amount of plastics and sound proofing under the bonnet of a new car only add fuel to the fire, so to speak.

It's no surprise they go up like a bomb.

Mercs in AUS trim use to be fitted with a standard fire extinguisher, always mounted on a bracket under the driver legs.

Guess owner couldn't work that out, or how to use it, or if it even existed?

Unless they are not in the A class????

I was amazed at the amount of rubber neckers and the ones still in the left lane slowing down almost to a complete stop and having a good ole fashion gander - it was just off the road on the lhs - and as well the gatherers that were only a matter of a few meters from the fully engulfed car - lunacy
I went past in the far right breakdown lane and you could hear it popping and going off - I really did not to be any where near it if it went kaboom - it was really on fire when I went past it - the emergency crews were not even there then
Certainly not something you see every day - and really do not want to see it again
