Hey all.
Was pretty ****ed off during the week when someone decided to steal a personalised number plate off the back of my car. It's just a shortened form of my last name (which isn't very common, like Smith), so it would have had no interest to anybody else save for a few driveoffs or so on. Anyway, I went to the police and got all that side of stuff sorted out, but what I am keen to know is what the process is at Vicroads. How much would it cost to replace, considering that it was stolen? Can I do it over the phone or do I have to go down there to sort it out. Also, would I attract any unwarrented attention from the boys in blue if they are travelling behind me and see a set of number plates that were stolen appearing back on a car? |

i was under the assumption that if your plates were stolen, they were decommissioned and you were issued with a new rego number... but i always wondered what the process was with personalised plates... seeing as i have them on the mazda, and will have them on the xe... eventually
if they charge like nsw rta, theyll cost you a fortune to replace them for the convenience...

Had my personal plates stolen and police put it down as a stolen car. All you have to do is report it then order new plates ( same ones ) from vicroads. Will cost around $145.00 and all is good.

I had a similar thing happen to me a few years ago.
I was told to hand the other plate in and get a different combination as for ever more everytime your plates are run through the police computers it will come up as stolen. This could mean you are asked politely to exit your car under gunpoint. I figure it was easier to change them.

Jeez how do they justify these prices for number plates? I reckon the actual cost to make them would make you throw up. Glad I'm not into them that much.

ova here in wa if you have personalised plates and one or both go missing with/with out the car you cant get the plates redone unless you hand both back in ( in any condition )
the plate is decomisioned for a number of years or untill the police come across them even thou you have the so called rights to the lettering ( not the plate itself )

Vic roads pricing system is rediculous... but yes if one gets stolen you have to replace it at cost of around $100... but you think thats bad... i just had my Personalised Plates put on my new car (the third car they have been on) at a cost of $94 i think it should be free to reuse your old plates after all you have already paid to use that combination

I had my LOW073 plates stolen and you have to report them to the police so you don't get the fines/tolls or in trouble when the drive of with fuel etc. The cops told me to keep a copy of the police report in the car for a while so you dont get the guns pointed at you.. Oh and I had to pay for new plates. Dont waste your energy trying to argue with vic roads..

The worse thing is when a check is done your plates still come up as stolen on the system. So you have to carry the letter from Vic Roads with you. Not wortht the hassle in my opinion. I am not sure on costs.

because im the original owner of the plates i got them remade, but alas, i still got fines in the mail and had to explain the same story to the infringement bureau each time i got a ticket. i know it sucks dude, but it's not worth the extra pain to get them remade. i've got my new plates properly secured to the car....if you know what i mean :evil3: :Up_to_som
