Rust and the sea

I was just wondering, because i live about 400 meters away from the beach, if it would have much of an effect on my car? Its garaged all the time with a cover on it, and i give it at least a wiping over if not a wash each time i put it back. Ive heard that the ocean salt will rust your car to rubber parts only and its really not good for it. Then again, theres a guy on my street closer to the beach with an IMMACULATE EH holden and it sits out the front every day and night as so it doesn't seem he is too worried about it. Im just wondering what everyone thinks from stories / experience. Thanks.

But an electronic rust preventer, good insurance. I have used them on my 4 x 4's and never had an issue with rust forming.

There would be a lot of salt water in the air near the beach. I'm not sure if there would actually be more salt in the air itself or just water vapour carried in the wind so wiping it while its tucked away would probably do the job.

Cars from snowy climates dont last long either beacuse they rust away due to the salt put on the roads to melt the snow.

Which is not done here in Australia as it is not required as our temperatures aren't as low as other countries.

i would recommend either "t-rust" , "erps" or "couplertec" brands as the most effective of the electronic rust prevention systems. i used to fit them in my previous life and did a lot of home work on whats available and different methods used.

what ever you do i would suggest you dont wait too long before getting some kind of protection.

if it was me i would be getting a "t-rust" unit fitted as well as coating inside all panels with a chemical type product, eg -lanoline, fish oil, wax based coating.

being so close to the beach there will be salt in the air all the time and it will be getting into every part of the car.

Wouldnt matter if it was locked away in a garage. Unfortunatley with no protection as stated above, it will find its way into any spot it can ..... and fairly quickly. I have seen many AU's and 5 year old cars with very bad rust on the pennisula here in vic.

I work in a Government Agency (Fisheries) that has a number of ocean-side offices (at first or second line of dunes that is closer than 400 metres) and staff posted there who drive their own car to work generally eventually realise that its best to have a second car that you don't mind rusting to pieces. The air and wind borne salt and spary gets under all the trim etc and inside body panels and cars rust very quickly.

Try any 4 x 4 accessory store (ARB, TJM etc etc) My Piranah system cost me $495 fitted.

NAH living near the sea is never a problem, just because car dealers around Batemans Bay advertise that their cars come from Canberra and other inland places doesn't mean a thing.

give them a call on " 1800 332 899 " and they will tell you who their closest agent is. i dealt with these guys for several years and always found them very helpfull.
the same company makes both products with the main difference being the name, (some marketing idea)

tell them what car you have and where you live and they will also be able to recomend how many contacts you should use on your system. the more contacts you have the better the system works. older cars also need more contacts because the metal becomes more suseptable to rust as it ages and weakens.

Lanotec. Pureed sheep in a can. Great stuff. Use it on door seams and other places where rust may happen.
