Default 2020 Mustang Entry Level Performance variant

I just saw this on caradvice.com.au

I wonder what they have installed for us.

Quote:
2020 FORD MUSTANG TO GET 'ENTRY-LEVEL' PERFORMANCE VARIANT

Blue Oval confirms there will be a more affordable performance Mustang model soon, though it hasn't specified what form it will take.

The Ford Mustang is already a fairly capable sports car, and in markets like the USA there's even more hardcore versions in the form of the Shelby GT350 and GT500 models.

According to reports out of North America, Ford Motor Company has confirmed a new "entry-level" performance variant of the iconic pony car will form part of the 2020 line-up, but hasn't divulged much else.

This has the rumour mill spinning, with publications like Autoblog guessing the new model will be based on the four-cylinder EcoBoost Mustang.

In the US the V8-powered Mustang GT is offered with various Performance Packages, including Michelin Pilot Sport tyres and upgraded Brembo brakes – included as standard on Australian models – though these options aren't available on the 2.3L EcoBoost 'Stang.

Other V8 derivatives include the Bullitt limited edition, the GT350 and GT350R, along with the all-out GT500. This has led Autoblog and other US outlets to speculate the new variant could either be a Performance Package or Ford Performance upgrade for the four-cylinder Mustang.

Expected features include a slight power bump, potentially up to the 257kW/440Nm tune of the outgoing Focus RS hot hatch, which is a decent improvement over the EcoBoost Mustang's 224kW and 441Nm, at least in terms of power.

Add to that stickier Michelin Pilot Sport rubber and upgraded Brembo brakes, a four-cylinder Mustang with Performance Package shapes up to be a worthy rival to the likes of the Nissan 370Z Nismo and high-spec versions of the Toyota 86 that are more track focused than their standard counterparts.

Nothing is official bar the new model's existence, however, so we'll have to wait and see what Ford comes up with over the next few months.

I would think a stripped back V8 over an ungraded 4 cyl would make more sense.

Perhaps to the car enthusiast, but in the world of trying to sell vehicles in high volume it doesn't.

Would this in any way be related to the Ecoboost hybrid Mustang that is coming in 2020? It will have more grunt than the standard ecoboost and will no doubt be quicker.

4 cylinder turbo hybrid? I just hear Porsche 919
But in all seriousness I am all for hybrid performance cars, why the hell not? Bring it on Ford.

Ford has secretly moved the Barra Engine making equipment to the US, and will be building a Barra Turbo Powered Mustang.

I'm for it too. As long as it has a decent petrol engine.

Why BS? Ford have already spoken about it and confirmed it is coming in 2020.

https://www.motortrend.com/news/2020...hat-to-expect/

Could be upto 400hp.

I reckon this is the performance 4 cylinder. Fits perfectly between the ecoboost and V8.

I bet it’s not a 4 cylinder Hybrid, that is the BS part IMO.

At some point of the interview, Nair told Emme this: “So couple that [instant torque provided by electric motors] with a... an EcoBoost-type engine and you have a great combination.”

Technically it could also be a V6 Ecoboost. We will see.

I guess we will, Ford did recently patent a new design for a hybrid Coyote too.

Well Focus RS is rumoured to be a hybrid. Would make sense to share that engine/electric motor with Mustang Hybrid, considering both cars have used the 2.3 ecoboost. Would need the engine turned north/south though.

Same engine already in the Focus RS & Mustang, so it make sense they would both get the Hybrid,
A Guess here, but they both might get the Transverse setup with AWD.

246 kW "Focus RS-sourced engine".

Wonder if it will come to Australia in some form?

From US based forum -

"A replacement for the former 2.3-liter EcoBoost Performance package, the new High Performance package is available on the Mustang coupe and convertible."

Australian EcoBoost Mustangs have the Performance Pack as standard so perhaps we could see this High Performance package made standard or will Ford continue to make PP's for the Australian market?

Initially a passion project that began with a Focus RS engine swap, the High Performance Package became a green-lit production program to strengthen Mustang’s entry-level performance offering in under 10 months – just in time for Mustang’s 55th anniversary
It just goes to show that Ford can do some cool packages when their heart is in it.

The other whisper is that the hybrid Mustang will indeed be a 5.0 Coyote with the
10-speed auto hybrid gearbox, adding up to 50 hp and 200 lb ft of torque to the ICE.

I wonder the same thing. Who is buying the 4, I’m sure I see 10+ v8 to every 1 4cyl. Seems not worth developing the 4 and focusing on the 8.

Or as you say, are people rebadging them, removing the pony badge on the back and swapping out for the GT badge? I do know this happens.

If we'd never had a V8 Mustang and Ford brought out a 2 door RWD coupe with the RS Focus engine people would be falling over themselves to buy it.

Why would you buy a GT86.

Win, win as far as I can see.
