Default Whats your policy on dings and dents?

Driving a car daily obviously subjects the car to the elements and especially in shopping centres the possibilities of scratchs/dents and dings.

Whats your policy on this? Do you fix every ding and scrape as they happen? dont worry about it? Wait for a few to accumulate?

The problem is driving a car around with dings and dents on it is pretty much like going in to work with a big red ketchup stain right down the front of a white shirt. People will judge you and you will be humiliated. Imagine waliking through a shopping centre like this?

But for dings and dents they can be costly and inconvenient to have to repair each time they happen.

So whats your policy on this? Drive around with the ketchup stain on your white shirt? or get it repaired ASAP?

LOL I dont think people judge others because of a few dints in their car (usually not self inflicted).

My cars never get dints because I am careful where I park them! Same goes for scrapes, none here.

Other people don't care about dints because they usually flip their cars every 3 - 4 years.

Holy crap! I didn't realise I'd be judged and humiliated by people, by having a door dent on my car! I'd better get it fixed asap and hope my friends don't think I'm a grub!

I hate dings and get them repaired ASAP as my OCD kicks in. One of my cars once got a dent in my big shed, self inflicted. I was so annoyed I got a mate to drive away and didn't look at it until it had been repaired. Dings attract dings. As soon as you get one they spread like an insidious pox until your car becomes a complete basket case.

My AU XR6 ute did 200k, not one ding. My BA 180k, not one ding. My FG XR6 ute, 200k, looks like new.

Did I mention I am OCD when it comes to dings and scratches?

I do my stone chips when I see new ones pop up (and on an FG with seemingly 20GSM paint thickness, chips turn up easily). Not because of any thoughts of humiliation though (how shallow can a person be), but because of pride in my car, and the fact I would prefer it NOT to rust.

I wear coffee stains on my shirt with pride - it shows I really don't care what others think, and if they point it out, I say "Yep, spilled my coffee" (hate the taste of ketchup).

I have no noticeable dings or dents thankfully - I am careful where I park, and so far have been lucky.

Bearbug: my old man taught me to park at the back of a car park to avoid car parking dents, and I'm not too Lazy like 90% of the population to walk an extra 30 secs to my car.

but why is it when I come back there's always a car next to me, do people get lonely?

Back on the topic small dings I have to live with them as you say its a costly and time consuming task to get the repaired, for it to only happen again

So true. ... I park far away from everyone else and boom. Someone decides to park next to me. Maybe they too care about their car like I do? I hope that's the case ;)

So- I've got a small stock pile of dents and scratches. Some of the stuff is unavoidable. Truck & cars kicking up rocks, people dinging your car with their door, no matter where you park. My philosophy is to build up a stock pile and then get all of it fixed in one go. I can't afford to have my car off the road every single time something happens.

No, there's no problem and again you're stirring the pot. It's paranoid people who think everyone judges them just by looking them and their possessions. Is your self esteem that low you have to resort to that to keep sane?

FYI if you must know my last car was covered in scratches and dings, just like a lot of other drivers out there and I didn't care if people looked at it and went omg he hates his car, I simply don't care what other people think.

Hell I drive a falcon because its going to get hit, scratched, dinged dented, and generally abused. saves what I prefer as my better car for looking good and being judged. The ute lives with all its life experiences on show. It collects more damage almost weekly, if its not others in the work carpark is fools misjudging their cars extremities while parked on the street. I too park away from the rest of the hoards, even in the falcon out of habit as some panels on my good car are irreplaceable in Australia and if I have to park it its almost in another post code to the event.
I wear my ketchup with pride, as in my profession I stand out from the crowd by driving a beat up ute. I am the resident redneck for driving a falcon.

Having a work ute in silhouette as my daily ive resigned myself to the fact that small chips and scratches are unavoidable but theres no chance you'd catch me driving round with what i call the 'factory option' tailgate dint ( you've seen what im talking about, the dint 62.5% of ute's have from where the driver has reversed into a post etc ) A bottle of touch up paint from Ford costs $15, if u cant hide the issue with that, u need to see a profesional

I think Along similar lines, I usually try and park in a nice secluded part of car parks, if that's not possible , I drive around for an mt spot , if neighboring cars next to an mt spot look ratty or uncared for or covered in car park dents and blemishes ........ I move on till I find a better spot.
At the end of the day both of my old limos are pretty straight, with a few minor blemishes, if they had dents they would be getting fixed, as for slight hard to see imperfections , id rather wait until its time for a full spray than doing patchups.

This comes down to perception, some will judge you based on anything, my tip would be not to let it get to you. Do whatever you want, don't stress what others think mate.

Funny how Hulk thinks a dent on a car is embarrinsing and humiliating but thinks his posts on this forum are not.

I watched my straight XH ute get peppered with hail for 15mins two weeks ago.

I've got very mild but noticeable dents on my bonnet and roof now :(

Do I care what other people think about driving a 17yo ute with hail damage - hell no. What I do care about is that my ute got damaged and I can't afford to fix it. I only have "bomb" insurance. Third party property, fire and theft.

Cheers!

How big does a dent have to be before you judge someone, Hulk?

In the past 7 years I have only got 1 dent where I didn't know where it came from. It wasn't very big, If I place 2 of my finger in a circle shape, I could circle around the dent. I did not bother getting it fixed. Would you judge me for having a dent of that size, Hulk?

Today I drove past probably Hundreds of cars, and even walked through a shopping centre carpark. I cannot tell you if one of those cars has dents on it or not, because I just don't care enough to look for small damage on random cars.
I do look at a lot of cars because I like them, not looking to judge the owner.

What if you were a young guy trying to impress a girl? If you turn up in a car that has a few dings and dents everywhere, the father might think "if he has no pride in his ride, how would he treat my girl"

I dont think there is a set rule here, its about what you think you can get away with without being judged unfavourably. Would you buy a car with the same damage that is on your car?

Its nearly 2015... Not 1969 bro! Theres a difference between a car iwth a few shopping centre carparks and one that has the paint falling off it. People have different priorities to us (car enthusiasts). For example they might put more effort into their relationships with other people then we do, its all horses for courses.

Dude, thats why you need to find out beforehand if she lives with her parents. If so, then borrow your friends Audi. If not, then it's cool to rock up in a Datsun 180B with a cricket bag on the back seat. ''Hi,I hope you like Fish n Chips''

Do you have an obsession with judging people? I couldn't give a stuff what people think of me if I drive a dinged up car. Not everyone lives their life as one big pi$$ing match you know.
