Default HULK FRIDAY: Are we the only ones who value old cars?

its the best time of week.. after a hard slog its time to polish it off with a hulk thread to ease you into your first beer.

Are we the only ones who value old cars? (along with our GM brothers)..

Plenty of people on the forum drive old cars, e series, AU falcons and even b series. Pre-90s cars are basically antique models.

But non ford/GM people look down at us and think he/she is driving an old clanger, driving a new car is a status thing and can be a little demeaning to be driving an old car. People would think "geez they didnt really make much of themselves did they"

You dont see people buying old Audi cars or old Mercedes or old BMWs.. Its either a new model or your a pretender or a bottomfeeder in society.

Also if your in a senior position at work, do you feel a little embarrassed driving an old E series or AU falcon into the carpark when even the admin girl drives a new car?

As much as I like old falcons/commodores, im starting to see the light a little from their perspective.

Are we the only people who value old cars and think we are driving something special? whilst everyone else is giggling at us thinking we are the bottomfeeders?

I see people buy "old" cars all the time.

Just look at the Toyota A86 sprinter, Nissan R30 R31 R32 R33 Skyline, Datsun’s, Alpha's and the list goes on.

Most of the management at my work driver older cars. Once drives a VX commodore and another drives a 2004 Astra, both on over 100k a year.

That's what separates us car enthusiasts from the regular plebs, Hulkster.

This happened to me a few weeks back from my cousins hubby, a regular pleb.
He saw my collection of old-ish cars, and said why do I have so many.
I said because I can.
He said I could buy a new car with the money spent on all my old ones.

I simply left it at that because the plebs will never understand...

BTW Hulk, another fantastic thread.

Why do you care so much about what other people think about you and your cars? Who cares what "society" says about what you drive. I think you are looking at it the wrong way, most people love to have a chat and to reminisce at servo's or at the track when we trailer our 44 year old mini around. If anything, I feel older cars are appreciated and admired more than new Euro's.

Thats cause its in the carpark and people can be ******, better to have an old banger to and from work thats well maintained and enjoy the brand new BMW on weekends and after work.

Knew a manager who drove a piece of crap car as they parked at the train station, they drive a very very nice Audi otherwise.

I would never trade my 82 bronco in for a new car, i love driving it as a daily. I don't car what other people think because i think they new cars are peices of crap

No. There's people who like pre 2010 Japanese and European cars out there too. Particularly performance models. The people who buy brand new mazda 3 maxxs could've bought FG XR8s, early 2000s Audi S4 V8s, VW GTis etc but they didn't because they weren't new and they didn't want a more powerful car.

I don't agree with your definition of antique.

Driving a new car is a status thing for most people. For most of the people in the car park at your local Coles it shows off how much money they can borrow. What they think about people driving older Falcons/Commodores or any other car is their (and your) problem, not ours.

People buy those cars all the time. You can stealthily call a large number of people on this forum pretenders/bottomfeeders all you like, but it isn't a shared view here and it is one likely to start arguments (aka trolling), so you're better off not continuing with it.

No I'm proud that I'm not spending around 25% of my take-home pay on a depreciating asset and I was never 25 and living at mum and dad's.

Good for you. Maybe you should look for a new European or Japanese car forum to post your hulk friday threads on?

I`d like to think that my taste in cars wouldnt change regardless of my Job position or financial situation. Yeah if I was rich, I`d own a bunch of cars that I consider classics. But I`d buy them because I think they look awesome, not because I need to look cool or worry about what other people think. If I was the last person on earth, this would be cool, well until all the batteries started going flat.

everyone cares what other people think.. why buy a nice shirt or have a haircut? Its not for any purpose but to look good to others. you could buy the worst cheapest shirt if its for the purpose of clothing yourself, sme with a haircut. Do it yourself in front of the mirror if you didnt care what other people think.

Same with cars, they are a status thing. like buying a nice watch etc etc etc..

The non Ford/GMH people do frown upon driving old bangers on the road.

There are no regulations in Australia to make driving an older car more expensive like they do in Europe and Japan.
So you will always see older cars that are in plentiful supply on the roads. i.e. what were the cars most sold in Australia in the 90's.
Perhaps you don't notice all the old Corolla's on the road, they tend to blend in

This thread is ridiculous!!

Bottom feeder because you drive an old car??

None of the cars you mention are really old anyway.

May be bottom feeder/houso if you drive a rusted out base model ill maintained rust bucket.

I would not call a guy driving an XY GT a bottom feeder. Anyone with a job can have a new car if they want, just depends on how much money you want to borrow and pay off, for most people driving a new over priced and expensive car is a status symbol that they can not really afford anyway.

Driving a 70-80K XB Coupe around, I don't feel like anyone would be looking down at me, currently restoring an XB Ute to use as my daily driver, as I rather drive that than some pretentious euro puss box.

From the threads you start I am not sure why you are here, as clearly you demonstrate over and over that you do not have a clue about cars, calling cars a few years old ancient.

How may cars have you actually restored or rebuild, how many genuinely older cars have you actually owned or driven, and I am not talking EL or AU Falcons, I am talking cars that are at least 30-40 years old, and decent models ie GT/GS style vehicles with some grunt.

But great fun to read the replies!

I know when I drive my "old" Falcon, the last thing I'm thinking of, is what others may think of my ride.

I dont judge a book by its cover. I dont judge a person by the car they drive. I know plenty of wealthy people that have an array of cars, new and old. Cars are a passion for some, others they are just a mode of transport.

Not every wealthy person will drive a brand new car, not every poor personal will drive a ****ter. You can never judge people.
