With Ford Australia steps away from extinction, the Falcon will sadly finish. However a car that deserves to be recognized is the FG ecoLPI falcon, I mean honestly what a car. Gone are the days were LPG is simply BBQ gas and that big 6 cylinder engines are too costly to run. The ecoLPI falcon is, equipped with the best 6 cylinder engine ever made (Barra inline 6), matched together with one of the best automatic transmissions (ZF 6speed) and is the cheapest to run large family sedan you can buy. Better economy than a 4 cylinder and yet it has plenty of cabin room and can tow a caravan with ease. With such a robust driveline that taxi’s demonstrate every day.
I mean what more can you want!? Some people are just soo stupid in not supporting local manufacturing and should be ashamed. Especially with the quality Australian engineering has to offer. Anyways that my 2 cents. Just wanted to share and pay respects to a car that deserves to be recognized. They needed to do 2 things with the Ecolpi.
#1 Advertise it As in the youtube clip above advertise the running costs. That it is cheaper to run than a Corolla and a Mazda 3, with more space , safety ect. #2 This is more drastic but back in the day when LPG was 1st released people were scared that it would explode on impact. I would show a video of a Falcon in a simulated crash. Maybe have a Corolla run up the back of one doing say 60km/h and show that they don't explode and how much safer you are in a bigger car.

Arguably the EcoBoost Falcon is perhaps better package again than EcoLPI.

Yeah okay mate at the end of the day it's my opinion but tell me another 6 better than the barra. Plenty of them pushing 500kw+. An engine that is able to deal with many high km, seen plenty with 800,000km and still running fine. Cheap to buy eg: $200 for a stock barra. Just unbelievable value for money and simply an engineering masterpiece

For a reasonably cheap large RWD sedan, it's a nice car. But it's not want the market want. If you want to tow, buy a large SUV or Ute. If you want space, buy a SUV. If you don't need a big car, buy a c segment car.
It pains me to say this, but the Falcon is just the wrong size. |

What do the torqueless BMW engines do better. They're smoother and they have better kw per litre figures and that's about it. In the real world a 525, 528, 530i is no more economical than the 4.0 dohc (or sohc ef to au). Send both of them to 1 million km and the coon will see a couple of water pumps, several coil packs and maybe rocker cover gasket. The BMW will see the scrap yard before half way.

My Falcon has a rooted bottom end at 235,000km, so where is this 1,000,000km people talk about?

LPG is now 94.5 cents a liter where I fill up, so gas isn't as clear a winner as it was a year ago.
The Ute still goes well and averages around 13 l/100 lkm in mixed traffic so it's still pretty efficient. |

Unfortunately falcon being a large car, it costs more. I laugh everytime people compare costs of running a gas falcon to a corolla. They will each cost the same to fill to travel a similar distance. Using round figures to fill up the 2 cars in my driveway:
FG Ecolpi Ute-$60 for 400-450 kays per tank Cost $35-40K 13 Rio-$60 (ULP 95) 480 kays per tank Cost $20K Now i dont know about you, but most people dont need to spend another 15-20K on a larger car that does 98% of the same things as a falcon that costs the SAME to run. That equasion changes somewhat when you are talking about buying a falcon secondhand though.Unfortunately buying second hand doesnt help keep the factory open.

Even if Ford advertised the Falcon, they still would be closing, because people do not want a large sedan. Everybody knows what a Falcon is even non car people.
Best example of this is commodore. Commodore is advertised all over the place but it still has a end date. |

2007 when the decision was made to kill the I6 and replace it with an imported V6. That was the beginning of the end of the Falcon.

The FG ecolpi is a great car, drives great with plenty of power, had one for a work car for a while, best company car I ever had hands down.
Even looked into buying one at the time till I saw the price, car costs too much for what it is IMO, great car but not for the $$$ IMO, and that is where it was let down.

and there is a way to clean up the Diesel combustion - LPG.

While watching the car auctions today, 3 EcoLpi falcons went under the hammer. Pickles Melbourne. None were sold.
Details - 02/12 FG Mk11 EcoLpi 61,000 klm. Grey .... Passed in on a $16k Vendor Bid 09/11 FG XT EcoLpi 54,000 klm. Blue.........Passed in on a $15k Vendor Bid 01/12 FG Mk11 XT EcoLpi 32,000 klm. Grey..Passed in at a Bid of $17,500 So it seems they are not popular on the second hand market, although i must say that i am checking them out because i would definitely like to buy one. Rocket67. |
