Default A car that deserves to be recognized: The FG ecolpi .

With Ford Australia steps away from extinction, the Falcon will sadly finish. However a car that deserves to be recognized is the FG ecoLPI falcon, I mean honestly what a car. Gone are the days were LPG is simply BBQ gas and that big 6 cylinder engines are too costly to run. The ecoLPI falcon is, equipped with the best 6 cylinder engine ever made (Barra inline 6), matched together with one of the best automatic transmissions (ZF 6speed) and is the cheapest to run large family sedan you can buy. Better economy than a 4 cylinder and yet it has plenty of cabin room and can tow a caravan with ease. With such a robust driveline that taxi’s demonstrate every day.

I mean what more can you want!? Some people are just soo stupid in not supporting local manufacturing and should be ashamed. Especially with the quality Australian engineering has to offer. Anyways that my 2 cents. Just wanted to share and pay respects to a car that deserves to be recognized.

Good read on the ecolpi falcon: http://www.caradvice.com.au/129513/f...pi-lpg-review/

That $2 Grand Prix should have been Ford's TV ad for the car. But nooo, we can't do any TV advertising for Falcons! How dare you!

They needed to do 2 things with the Ecolpi.
#1 Advertise it
As in the youtube clip above advertise the running costs. That it is cheaper to run than a Corolla and a Mazda 3, with more space , safety ect.
#2 This is more drastic but back in the day when LPG was 1st released people were scared that it would explode on impact. I would show a video of a Falcon in a simulated crash. Maybe have a Corolla run up the back of one doing say 60km/h and show that they don't explode and how much safer you are in a bigger car.

I wonder how many years back did the whispering of Falcon's demise start at Ford HQ? If it was better promoted it would have been harder to justify shutting up shop. On the other hand, every cent saved not promoting falcon meant a lower total loss.

If you knew you were going to eventually knock down and rebuild your house the most you would give it to make it more tolerable is a lick of paint.

Then again, what did ecolpi cost in R&D? Will that investment be able to be used on other cars? Looking back, its a wonder why they didn't concentrate on EB only as the Falcon econocar as the technology is shared globally.

Arguably the EcoBoost Falcon is perhaps better package again than EcoLPI.

Not really M.C. The EcoLPi can tow more than the EcoBoost.

As the OP has said the EcoLPi does everything right and the driveline is strong and lasting.

I am just so ****ed off about the xmas lpg prices spiking up so high I doubt anyone will order a new EcoLPi this year now. ie recent 300 Ford jobs being axed.

And all because the stupid government years ago set the LPG pricing by the International Saudi Aramco structure.

Just another of the many many many contradictive, backwards, ludicrous ideas the Australian governments come up with.

BMW. By. A. Mile.

The Barra is good considering what little was spent on it, but its not the most efficient, and certainly not the smoothest.

For a reasonably cheap large RWD sedan, it's a nice car. But it's not want the market want. If you want to tow, buy a large SUV or Ute. If you want space, buy a SUV. If you don't need a big car, buy a c segment car.
It pains me to say this, but the Falcon is just the wrong size.

What do the torqueless BMW engines do better. They're smoother and they have better kw per litre figures and that's about it. In the real world a 525, 528, 530i is no more economical than the 4.0 dohc (or sohc ef to au). Send both of them to 1 million km and the coon will see a couple of water pumps, several coil packs and maybe rocker cover gasket. The BMW will see the scrap yard before half way.

LPG is now 94.5 cents a liter where I fill up, so gas isn't as clear a winner as it was a year ago.
The Ute still goes well and averages around 13 l/100 lkm in mixed traffic so it's still pretty efficient.

Holden consistently pushed the Commodore as hard as they possibly could, and (unfortunately) that didn't save it from a shrinking large car sector and GM's global restructuring. (If) the traditional 'Falcon push' was abandoned it was a shrewd (but cold) decision.

Unfortunately falcon being a large car, it costs more. I laugh everytime people compare costs of running a gas falcon to a corolla. They will each cost the same to fill to travel a similar distance. Using round figures to fill up the 2 cars in my driveway:
FG Ecolpi Ute-$60 for 400-450 kays per tank Cost $35-40K
13 Rio-$60 (ULP 95) 480 kays per tank Cost $20K
Now i dont know about you, but most people dont need to spend another 15-20K on a larger car that does 98% of the same things as a falcon that costs the SAME to run. That equasion changes somewhat when you are talking about buying a falcon secondhand though.Unfortunately buying second hand doesnt help keep the factory open.

Even if Ford advertised the Falcon, they still would be closing, because people do not want a large sedan. Everybody knows what a Falcon is even non car people.

Best example of this is commodore. Commodore is advertised all over the place but it still has a end date.

2007 when the decision was made to kill the I6 and replace it with an imported V6. That was the beginning of the end of the Falcon.

The FG ecolpi is a great car, drives great with plenty of power, had one for a work car for a while, best company car I ever had hands down.

Even looked into buying one at the time till I saw the price, car costs too much for what it is IMO, great car but not for the $$$ IMO, and that is where it was let down.

I'm the other way around, I believe the Falcon was still in the plans and adopting their global V6 engine and later on to potentially run a global platform. Once the decision was reversed I was 90% sure falcon was dead. It couldn't survive on its own in a truly global market.

It pains me to say this, but the Falcon is just the wrong size.
There is no large SUV or ute (except Falcon EcoLPI ute) that is as clean and cost effective as the Falcon EcoLPI sedan, when measured in $/100km and any type of emission. Most large SUV / ute are disease-al and pour clouds of soot all over the place. It is just not possible to clean up the combustion process in a diesel - it is a consequence of the 'heavy' fuel used compared to petrol.

'C' segment cars do not get the $/100km that an EcoLPI Falcon can do day in day out - particularly if they need a diet of premium fuel.

The darl has a 'B' segment car with a 1.5L engine and continuously variable transmission - my G6e goes quicker, quieter, with more comfort and heaps less $/100km.

As for practical, I brought home a new front door this morning, with the boot closed and the front seats in my normal place. Try carting a 2040mm x 830mm load in a 'B' segment car.

When the lease ends on the current ride, I will get another one if it is still available - if not, I will hang on to this one - the best car (for me) ever built.

Go Ford, go further - for less.

There would be an SUV if they had of made an EcoLPI Territory.
and there is a way to clean up the Diesel combustion - LPG.

Typical negative deliberately misleading 'second hand car' comment.

You have been here long enough to know that Ford Australia EcoLPI is a factory option on new cars, not a conversion.

I think the people that buy new LPG cars are more enlightened than those that spend plenty more $ choosing a disease-al option on a new car.

While watching the car auctions today, 3 EcoLpi falcons went under the hammer. Pickles Melbourne. None were sold.

Details -

02/12 FG Mk11 EcoLpi 61,000 klm. Grey .... Passed in on a $16k Vendor Bid

09/11 FG XT EcoLpi 54,000 klm. Blue.........Passed in on a $15k Vendor Bid

01/12 FG Mk11 XT EcoLpi 32,000 klm. Grey..Passed in at a Bid of $17,500

So it seems they are not popular on the second hand market, although i must say that i am checking them out because i would definitely like to buy one.
