It is not just Holden. GM is downsizing (rightsizing?) all over the planet.

The taste of bankruptcy from the GFC is still there in the gm board rooms, getting rid of non profitable dead wood it seems is still no one priority, and rightly so .

GM's Consolidated International Operations Division is their biggest loss-maker on GM's books and now that the US Treasury is out of GM's ownership, the GM board can be more ruthless and start cutting these money burners.

So can we say that Holden was always destined to close and was not the fault of new Australian government?

I have a sneaking suspicion that there is a lot of pressure on the American Big 3, GM, Ford and Chrysler to manufacture the majority of their vehicles in the US. Look at Ford, 11,000 new employees over the next 9 months. The US Government is trying to protect it's own economy and is bringing all it's profitable manufacturing back home.

Most likely. I think it is unreasonable to blame the new Australian government for Holden's demise. It's a combination of factors.
