Breaking News: Senior Government Ministers believe Holden will cease manufacturing in Australia by 2017.
Holden has made the decision to pull out of Australia as early as 2016, according to senior Government ministers. The ABC has been told the announcement was supposed to be made this week but has been put off until early next year. Holden says its discussions with the Government are continuing, and it does not respond to speculation. Despite several of his colleagues believing Holden is leaving, Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane says that is not his understanding. The Federal Opposition has been warning Holden would make the decision before Christmas if the Government did not announce an assistance package for the industry before then. The Government has said it would wait for the findings of a Productivity Commission inquiry, due in March.

Terrible news if true. No surprise but unfortunate for everyone involved.
I wonder if this means Toyota will take off around the same time? |

Bugger...hopefully with Ford and Holden publicly announcing these shutdowns it will make the whole nation wake up and smell the reality that has dawned upon us all.

The component manufacturers will no longer have a viable business model once Holden packs up so that would certainly leave Toyota in a difficult situation. If this latest news is correct, and I'd suspect it's pretty close to the mark, then Toyota will no doubt leave our shores as well.
I really don't think most people will be taken by surprise with this news though. The writing's certainly been on the wall for a good while when you think about it. It's pretty scary when you think how many industries and large manufacturers have closed down in the last 20 years. Very sad indeed. Russ. |

It's a shame. Toyota won't be too far behind.
Also what happens when our dollar drops are we are paying 10-20% more for imported cars? |

Holden obviously didn't want to announce it just before Xmas.
Feel sorry for the workers. I don't know about the rest of Australia but in Adelaide, Holden is a daily news topic - especially on talk back radio. It will not be a surprise and to be honest, Adelaideans have already conceded that they will close, so it won't be a shock at all.

Importers will cut their margin to some extent. Don't forget 88% of cars sold are imported. |

These things get announced strategically. Let the workers enjoy their Xmas. But please, this is a forum, and it's topics like this that are made to be discussed in a forum. We are not an official site, so we don't have to tow the official party or company line.

Not surprised at all. Once Ford went the others were bound to follow. With the next generation Camry not due until 2016 or 2017, I expect Toyota will also pull the pin on their local production activities.

Any of the national newspapers would be proud of this misleading thread title. Lol.
It's just all the same speculation that's been occurring since Ford dropped the axe. |

Looks like Paul Keating's comments in the 1980s about Australia becoming a banana republic is about to come true.

Co incidental that this was made more so public less then an hr away from Ford's official Mustang reveal ?.
Either taking some lime light or a good time to speculate to take the heat of yourself, I wouldn't be surprised if Holden were behind this not the media. |

So I guess my 3-4 week time frame of a closure announcement was correct.

This is not good news at all. Most of us on here knew it was inevitable that Holden would shut the doors on its manufacturing operations here, but 2016...?
I really feel for the thousands that will be given the **** directly (and the tens of thousands indirectly through component suppliers). |
