Just wondering what people's best figure is? I'm talking about long-term average (at least 30 min of driving), not instantaneous.
I was doing a 120 km drive the other day and although my car is not a Falcon, I was amazed to get only 5.0L / 100km. This is a mid-size car, 2.4L GDI petrol, 6-speed automatic. With a 70L tank, that's a theoretical range of 1400km!! Has anyone managed to ever better this? PS - I should mention that this figure was achieved going at 90 km/h. On a trip home from Brisbane last year, over a 200km stretch from Gympie to Gin Gin, my XG used 14 litres.... Dunno why, but I was amazed.

The best I've obtained in my 2006 BFII Egas sedan was 9.3L/100km. Cruise control set to 100-110km/h. Achieved via a Melbourne-Bairnsdale trip.
The Hyundai i20 I recently rented for a Melbourne-Geelong project meeting achieved an average of 5.4L/100km. Cruise control once again set to 100km/h. |

Got 7.9L/100km from an FG XR6 on a 350km road trip. (A/C on)
Similar trip in an '12 I30 I managed 6.5L/100km (no A/C)

I Drove from Coffs Harbour to Brisbane in my 2009 G6E Turbo and Average fuel Econ was 7.8L/100ks with air con. Trip was 420ks

I again drove from Nambucca Heads to Gold Coast In my 2007 Holden SSV (man) And got 8.6L/100ks with air con.

On a weekend trip from Canberra to Sydney, around Sydney for the weekend and then back to Canberra. On the highway I sat around or just above the limit (I like to get places rather than dawdle around) and my average for the entire trip was 7.9L/100kms round trip was 700ish kms all with A/C on (being duel zone climate control). Car is a BF MKII XR6 with ZF 6spd and no modifications.
I was very impressed with this, was a great improvement over my BA wagon.

BF XR6 went from Bathurst to Grafton 7.8L/100 distance of about 850kms. Car loaded to the hilt with holiday gear, and lots of road works/towns along the Pacific Highway. I was impressed.

I pulled 9 flat with A/C a few years back in my 3v Fairlane going from Perth to Shark Bay with a few playful stabs along the way, mind you that was before cams. These days I'm happy if I can see the south side of 10 on a long trip.

I went for a bit of a country total economy run a couple of weeks ago in the xr6, just to see if it would still do the economy it did when it was fairly newish, I topped it up with 98 till it wouldn't take anymore, from the outset the dte was fairly crap to start off with, to make a long story short , going by the dte it was about 100 k,s short of my average good economy and no where near my best, I filled up at the same servo near home until it would take no more and recorded the figures, anyway 7.06 litres per 100 k if I worked it out correctly(checked twice to make sure).
I might add conditions were very good , no lights, no aircon running, almost no wind , not many hills, about 210 kg of largeish people cargo. I was really trying to do good economy, a bit dissapointing , but still not to bad for an old girl. Edit: sat on 110 for 95% of the run. Last edited by mik; 05-07-2013 at 09:06 PM. |

I filled the car up today before heading down the coast and then back again. On the way back it was sitting on 8.2 and I was doing 110kph with A/C on but once I hit the suburbs it went up to 8.6 when I stopped.
Today I also got the highest DTE reading when I filled up of 640km whereas normally it says around 580.

Geelong to Melbourne couple times a week I average 7.8L/100km in my BF XR6T manual. Just whack it in 6th and cruise at 100 no aircon.

I've seen 5.4L/100km in the Skoda, but only when driving Miss Daisy.

600km out of 70L in my EL Fairmont Ghia, averages around 11.5L/100km over a tank on the highway, mostly 100km/h country freeway on BP98/United 100.

We did a 500km round trip to the Hunter Valley in April. Didn't fill up till after we got home. The average was 10.8L/100km which if I've converted correctly is around 26mpg in the old money.
Essentially not much traffic and sat at 100 to 110 on the Putty Road. From Kurrajong to home I took it pretty gentle on the throttle as the low fuel light had come on but I reckon that's excellent for a V8.

On flat road with cruise set to 100km/have the instant consumption hovers around 7-7.5l/100km.

And for the less powerful and lighter Hondas and Mazdas which may use a litre or so less per 100km, you have to offset this against their uncapped 6 monthly service schedule which can cost up to $800 per year, whereas the Falcon is $260 per year. Falcons are good highway cars while still making financial sense.

when I first bought my BF XLS 1 Tonne V8 ute.. I drove it from rocky to kyogle NSW, cruise set to speed limits and driving rather gingerly as Id only just bought it and was getting a feel for the vehicle..... getting a low reading of 9.6.. was different coming home though.. I guess because qld is up hill lol..
now I usually sit on the 12.8 mark depending on the time of day, when I drive from rocky to blackwater.. which is 100kph as well as a decent section of 110kph. |

Best I got out of my XB GT going to Adelaide with the old Engine was 14 / 100. Woul be worse now with the new Engine and lower Diff.

I borrowed my daughters nissan tida the other week ,went from maryborough to the big pinapple ,i had 4 people + air most of the way cause it was raining and the demister is hopeless,used 10lts per 100 kms ,cost us $40 for the trip ,that is worse than my bf ute ,i sometimes wonder if they do the usage numbers with nobody in the car with the air off ,why would you drive a cramped up front wheel drive pile of junk when you can drive a lovely falcon for the same expense ,after that i love my ford even more

We consistently saw 7.6l/100km in the old AU 6 auto on long highway runs (legit messured fom the tank). It's retired to the paddock to slowly convert back to dirt now. It had good economy for a tank/barge/boat but completely rubbish compared to a modern car. I get 5.6 17/205s in the Fiesta and my father gets 6.9 in his Kia Sorento which is impressive considering it weighs fully 2 ton and has 18/235 tyres
