Nissan has started advertising the new Pulsar, not due to go on sale until next month. Another car for Focus to fight...The medium car range buyer is spoilt for choice.

The base model Pulsar ST comes standard with 16-inch alloy wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, Bluetooth connectivity, a full compliment of safety features (front, side and curtain airbags, stability control, brake assist and traction control), cruise control and a full size spare.
Move up to the Pulsar ST-L and you get a rear spoiler, LED accent lights, leather steering wheel and shifter knob as well as fog lamps. The range topping Ti comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, integrated satellite navigation system, rear-view camera, xenon headlamps, full leather trim and dual-zone climate control. The Nissan Pulsar range will be bolstered by mid-2013 when the company introduces the Nissan Pulsar SSS turbocharged hatch and regular hatchback models powered by the same 1.8-litre engine. In order to steal some thunder away from the new Corolla (which launches this week) and give early adopters a reason to choose Pulsar, Nissan Australia is offering a pre-sale offer on the 2013 Pulsar sedan range. Starting tomorrow and running up until the Pulsar’s launch in February, a 10 per cent deposit will see you in a Pulsar sedan ST manual for $299 per month with a guaranteed future value. This extends to Pulsar sedan ST-L ($399/month) and Ti model ($499/month). 2013 Nissan Pulsar manufacturer’s list prices: ST Manual - $19,990 ST CVT - $22,240 ST-L Manual - $23,650 ST-L CVT - $25,900 Ti CVT - $28,990 http://www.caradvice.com.au/195762/2...r-start-19990/

Petrol 1.8 4 cylinder with a CVT. I'd rather walk, thanks Nissan. Maybe if the SSS is a hatch, has about 160kw/260nm, weighs around 1200kgs and costs circa $33-$35k, then I might be interested.

Haven't cvt's effectively been replaced with efficient 6 speed auto's in the last few years? I wonder what Nissan's reasoning behind using one was?
I think it's more along the lines of another well appointed very competitive new vehicle with a highly regarded nameplate in the segment, in a market flooded with customers. Especially relative to large cars.

They should have just called the Tiida a Pulsar, would have caused much less confusion.

From my understanding (I'm happy to be proved wrong), Nissan Australia made the call to bring in the Tiida rather than the Pulsar, which was still manufactured, but at a higher cost. Tiida was a cheaper car for Nissan to manufacture, and Nissan Australia wanted to pocket the difference as margin. Tiida was sold in cheaper markets (Asia, Africa etc, while Pulsar was still being sold in Japan). As we know the Tiida proved to be a flop that no amount of "Sexy in the City" advertising could change.
As mentioned I'm happy to be proven wrong as my information is 3rd hand.

I dont think the plan was to return the Pulsar, its just the Tiida as a name floped
People were compfortable with the Pulsar, and liked the product, Ime sure there was millions of reasons for the change, none that will seem relivanty to any one now. Ive always liked the Nissan Pulsar as a product and if I was in the market for a car in this class I would give it a look, where as the Tiida by name jsut didnt raise my eye brows. not very good reasons for ruling a car out, but in a market thats as full as it is in the class you need to do a quick kull before you dip your go in to it too much

With a segment that has so many quality cars I can see this one getting lost in the crowd.

Yeah, I think Nissan have been out of the small car game for too long and have been too inconsistent over the years to compete with established favourites like the Corolla and Mazda 3, and new contenders like the Focus - but it's such a big segment so it should still sell in good numbers.

The ST might be competitive with the Ambiente model but don't see how the ST-L would be with the Trend model Focus. We will have to see how it plays out I guess.

A buzz box typically refers to something you have to rev the clappers out of to get moving. Something which you do not have to do in the Falcon.

I've been driving a rental Hyundai Accent for the past week and it's anything but a 'buzzbox'.

Back in '93 we bought a 6 month old N14 Pulsar SSS.
It only had 105kw with the SR20DE in it but it was a little pocket rocket in its day. Used to loving driving it, torque steer and all, 7500rpm gear changes made it very entertaining. These days hot hatches can have 160+kw, not really buzzbox's. Anything with less than 100kw can probably have that name, but not this.

I've owned 5 pulsars. My first car was pretty unreliable but when I upgraded to a 2001 model SSS I was hooked. Cosmetically I think the N15 Pulsar was one of the best looking cars on the road. Being a P plater at the time I "raced" around a fair bit and these things went great. The SR20DE was a solid lil engine and was used in a range of nissans cars... I still don't understand why they don't bring it back, newer and better
