Queensland Rego Stickers- What date is on them?

Hey Guys,

I was in a car accident yesterday (other driver pulled out in front of me on a 80km/h stretch of road) and I now have a rental car provided by the insurance company. Was having a look at it today, and realised the rego sticker says 18/08/2009. So, my question is, am I driving around in a car with an old rego sticker on it, or does that date mean something else?

I'm in NSW, and the cops here come down heavily on that sort of stuff, so I won't risk driving it until I find out if all is good or not... Done a ring around of the local Hertz's but being Sunday evening, they're all shut...

Thats the date it expired, i'd be onto the rental co. They may just haven't had time to put the new sticker on

I think they only real possible solution other than it being out of rego is that they have paid it on the last couple of days it was due being 18/08 and the new sticker hasn't come through yet but if thats the case they should really have some sort of receipt in the glovebox. Ive done it a couple of times, paid it the last day it was due and the sticker took a couple weeks to get posted out, but kept the receipt in the glovebox to cover myself. Other than that I'd say it may not have been paid

If it's a renter I'd be driving it anyway, the onus is on Hertz to have the car registered and legal.

in qld you can also get fined for driving with an expired rego sticker.. if it's been paid or not....

In NSW the sticker gets sent out with the renewal, usually 1 month before the expiry date, and everything can be done over the net (except the inspection.) A visit to the RTA isn't necessary, you just pay the money and carry on driving.

ROFL. try telling that to the Highway Patrol.

The onus is on the driver to ensure that they are driving a legal roadworthy vehicle.

Only if the new one has been issued and you have confirmed receiving it.

They are slack often taking a couple of weeks to send stickers.

If rolled the copper will do a QV on your car and if it is registered and the sticker is less than a few weeks old you will not be charged unless of course you fail the "attitude test".

Ok cool... I figured I could just play dumb, say it's a rental, but wanted to make sure first... I'll get onto the rental company first thing in the morning!

no it is illegal to have an expired rego sticker in qld no matter what your excuse is. it doesn't matter when dept transport send out new one it is illegal to leave the old one on.

that makes a lot of sense hey..pay on the expiry date, get fined a day later for having an expired sticker yet you have payed and have a receipt?

I believe it is a 28 days grace, to replace the sticker. Logistically it's stupid to pay for rego renewal on the day of expiry, and expect a sticker the same day.

ok mate. but on my rego cert(the one the new lable) it clearly states right above the sticker on the front of the page that Failure to remove expired lable may result in a penalty of $80. thats what i'm going by. you do as you like.

You will not be fined if a registration check reveals that your vehicle is currently registered and it is less than 21 days since the expiry date. Your receipt is proof of payment.

You must attach your label within 21 days of the expiry date. You will be fined if you have received the label but not applied it to your vehicle within the 21 days after expiry or payment date.

MAY result in a penalty of $80......

Then again none of those things MAY happen either.....

The MAY part MAY just be the "attitude test" component stated above....

You are right, that is written on the paperwork but you are taking it out of context.

They are referring to it being illegal to drive with an old sicker when a new one has been issued, or placing the new one on without removing the old one. They are not referring to it being illegal to drive with the old sticker on PRIOR TO THE ISSUE OF THE NEW ONE. How could they, in QLD the notice comes out around a month before expiration and a new sticker can take a month to be delivered, so according to your theory you have to pay it the day you receive the notice?

Flappist is 100% correct but if you do not believe him I could get Tori to research it for you, I think her work might have a clue (QLD Transport).

Not unusual here for the sticker to arrive a few weeks after due date. If the copper gets narky, he/she may remove it. Been pulled over a couple of times, no big deal.

Whats the story with everyone putting rego stickers in the top left hand corner of the windscreen (passengers side)? I thought it had to be put on the bottom??

Which state?

In NSW I think it can be on any non moveable window, in any position.

In Qld you can also put them on a fixed window on the left hand side of the vehicle.

Yep its meant to be on the bottom passenger side on the windscreen or the fixed side window at the back on the passenger side also

Being a rental car and working in the industry the rego was most likely paid on the 18th and then the car being registed in a company name the label will go to head office then then be posted out to the location where the car is usually rented from.

Where i was it wasnt uncommon to see rental ca with rego labels 2 months out of date due to the car having Vic rego and being part of the brisbane airports regular fleet of cars

That's gotta be a first for WA! being proactive over something stupid like a rego label.

I'm afraid I dont see anything stupid about them. Two scenes come to mind when they are usefull...

Your in a crash and you notice that the other car is out of rego, bingo, you win. With no label who knows?

A police car notices you rego label and can instantly see if it's current. No label means a call to the radio room, who then comes back with the car, and your, complete driving history. Which may or may not be a good thing
