Default Advice On Car For Targa Rally

Hey.

Ive decided im going to race in the Targa West Rally......Well not really race but just do it for fun. So i need a car to do up or modify. But i dont know where to start. Half the fun will be getting the back out there for it has to be RWD. Im a fan of the VH-VK V8`s but parts for them especially the diffs are hard to get. I dont know if i should just go buy an EF XR6 and use that or something older?

Looking to aspending about 6k on the car and modifying it from there. Ideas?

Over here in W.A cars are expensive compared to over east keep that in mind.

Cheers

get a 4WD import cheap lots of available mods and generally speaking easy to work on. Nissan Gti-r are extremely good for it and are fairly cheap to buy.

An old escort would be good, most have been modified to some point anyway. Nice and light to throw around and would be fast enough to make it exciting without being too dangerous. Ive wanted to do this event as well but I believe the entry fee is about $ 5000.00 dollars maybe someone could confirm exactly how much it does cost.

Depends on whether you want to be competitive or just have some fun. I too would get an esky or something cheap thats easy to work on and a hell of a lot of fun. If you are a good driver you can usually do well in your class too.

just use your xr8, $6000 can cover your tires and entry fee

You should really have a close look at the CAMS regulations regarding vehicle modifications and classes. You're VERY limited in what you can do to some cars, so it's worth checking out what you can do before spening the money.

My 2 cents

Classic Cars
1. Porsche
2. Torana
3. BDA Escort

Modern
1. EVO - rally import?
2. WRX - rally import?

I doubt you can afford any of them.

BDA Escort....your talking $60k+ for just the car arn't you?

Id get an escort...4 door will do as your not that serious. Then go buy a magazine called Retro Ford IIRC, they made a race car on a shoe string budget.

Competing is half the fun.

early subaru with late model 2.5 turbo motor, may blow the budget, but would definantly make a contender.

Just go to a proper news agency and they should have it.

Its a UK mag that only deals with escorts/cortinas/capris etc; its actually a pretty informative mag; better than the crap we get here.

They should have a website aswell for back issues.

RS2000s do well in their class in the targa tas and they aren't that expensive. You kind of want a slightly run down version of an old car so you don't respend on suspension, brakes, motor etc etc.

Wasnt there a black torana several years ago that went very well, and it turned out to be a $5-6000 trade in at a dealership the week before? They just sorted the brakes and gave it a tune and the rest was as traded???

Good luck with it and as mentioned, do heaps of research BEFORE you spend your money!

Here's one (escort) that was prepared earlier.
