I used to HATE them with passion It wasn't just the engine sound either Especially those bridgeported ones with the aweful rap rap noise. Then I drove a Series 6 RX-7 mild port at Eastern Creek and could not believe how the VERY light weight of the rotary engine over the front wheels helped the weight distribution so much that it made for awesome handling (and therefore higher mid corner speed and consequent fast lap times). Of course I now realise the RX-7 is much more than a light engine and has amazing design as well throughout I am now hooked and someone would have to give me Porsche GT3 for a silly price to get me out of the RX-7 on the track By the way are you guys making up some of these names? I had never heard of the following until this thread KPGC-10 GTR Fairlady Z432R EB1 |

Well I reckon Nissan took a leaf out of Olds 442 (4 gears, 4 barrel carb, 2 exhaust pipes) when they named the Z432. It stood for 4 valve head, 3 carbs & 2 exhausts. All my books list it as a Z432, not a Z432R.
EB Honda's - the early first generation round shape Civics were named after their engines EB1, EB2 & EB3's. A lot of little differences and refinements between them although some guys reckon that the EB3 was the pick of the lot. They can be magic little cars when worked over as they only weigh 650ish kg, have strut suspension (easy -ve camber) & the engine was more advanced than a Mini's A series. Haven't had the pleasure of thrashing an Rx7 around a track, the only rotary I've driven was a test drive of a ropey Rx4 years ago. The worked ones that I've competed against sure seem quick (& loud).

The Kpgc we got as the 240K in both the sedan and the coupe, it went to the Skyline in the next incarnation. As for the Z432 my understanding and the consensus within the Z community is that it actually stood for 4 Valves - 3 Carbs - 2 Cams as for the R that was the police special

And how come no-ones mentioned "the Elan from Japan" the pop up headlight Mazda MX5/Miata as a classic?

correct, but the R was not the cop special...
Z432R A Japan only model Fairlady Z equipped with the twin cam 2.0 L inline 6 cylinder "S20" engine shared with the KPGC10 Skyline GT-R. The Z432R was orange with black steel wheels and a low luster black hood. Z432R had lighter front guards, doors, and bonnet, as well as further engine enhancements compared to the Z432. So... as i was saying Z432R=win |

Whilst agree with you that Z423R "wins", i have old mags that show it used by the police somewhere in the abyss that is the junk room.... maybe they were promo shots?

wrong I'm afraid The ZG was pretty much a showroon racer. The Z432R was the cop special and Japan Domestic Market (JDM) only, the Z432 was available for export but don't know how many made it, almsot all of them have now though been re imported back into Japan.

I saw a nice ZG nose on a 260Z in traffic the other day, it looked like the proper 5 piece one, not the cheap 1 piece copies. Has anyone priced a ZG nose out of Japan lately? Bruddy expensive, but the quality is good. Wish I'd ordered it earlier when the yen/dollar ratio was almost even. The Japs have done some weird things with race homologation - 2.5 litre turbo Supras, 3.7 litre 350z, Nsx's with wacky body kits and snorkel air intakes. There was a 2.0 litre RB turbo engine instead of the normal VG engine put in Z30 Fairladys at one stage (don't really know if this was an homologation special). Xrqtr I'm surprised that the 2000GT hasn't appeared before this either. Mmmm Yamaha heads. Pity that they chopped 2 for the JB film. IMHO the rally replicas - evo MR, tommi 6.5, 22b, Various STi's & RB specials will be future classics.

I think I might post negative comments to waste space and everybody's time simply because I have no interest in the topic of this thread but I think everybody who is actually interested in this thread will really care what I think..... Need further clarification? I can elaborate if necessary...... but I wont. Get this back on topic please.
Of the jap cars, I'd have to say I have an interest in the rotaries. RX3 would be something I'd like parked in my garage. |

Since I bought my RX-7 (just 12 months ago) I have been amazed at the number of people who mention their desire for an RX2 or RX3 when they are looking at/going over my RX-7. It happens at tracks, service stations, fast food outlets, spare parts places, just about everywhere I pull up with the race car in tow. There have been at least 20 people who have said they basically would love an old RX2 or 3. It seems they might be a good one to buy for someone who is interested in getting a classic that will probably rise in value. The only exception that I have found was at a RENEW day at Wakefield a few months ago. A guy had flipped his gorgeous Historic Rego RX2 on turn 3 and destroyed it at pretty high speed. He had clipped the ripple strip and the front left Simmons wheel collapsed. He got out unscathed because it had a full 6 point welded cage but when we helped load the wreck onto a car trailer (which he borrowed for the trip home) I mentioned that a mate had a completely rust free RX2 that he used to rally tucked away in his shed** whicxh might be for sale. Now that guy was quite definite about never having another RX2 (because of their tendency to flip) but he did say he would probably look for an RX-7 late model for a track only weapon so he is not out of the rotary scene just yet. **FWIW that same guy also has in his shed a 240Z and of all things a P76. |

Looking at some of those Japanese cars, you can get a feeling which one'll be a classic. Surprisingly, I've seen 22B's going for 25-35grand on carsales/carpoint, yet on a magazine advertisement they were advertised for nearly 90grand! What's up with that?
@Munroman - The llate model RX-7's look absolutely gorgeous, the curves from that car are just magnificent. Plus that cabin looks pretty snug!

Here's my old 'classic'..lol. One of the best (and only) Toyota models around IMO. Supra RZ Twin Turbo six speed manual and a whole lot of fun. It was a fantastic car and one of the highlights in my car owning lifetime.

But since I got the RX-7 just on 12 months ago a few local young guys have flocked to my door to help out building it into a race car and one often talks about the 22B Subaru. Funny eh how numbers take on a whole new vocab when they relate to cars. And yeah I agree with you on the FD RX-7. Curvy and low but I have mine simply because they are a low cost weapon on the track. For $6000 you get a standard FD and for $10000 you get one with some pretty good mods from Japan. Ichibahn generally have them in stock. They are suitable for (CAMS) "Prod Sports" , iRace Muscle Division and AASA SuperTT or you can just use them at track days and supersprints. But unlikely to register for road. "SNUG" is an understatement. I am 185cm and to fit with a helmet you need to put in a drop floor which BTW gives an even "closer to the ground" feeling. My wife reckons I love it but I don't. Although I think I love my FG XR6T ute. One night soon I might take them both to WSID and put one up against the other. Tow car vs Circuit car. Should be interesting as the last time I went to the drags it was at Castlereagh when Valiant utes raced! P.S. I'm backing the ZF ute at the drags but on a track the RX would kill it.. are you talking about the STI 22B??
A mates brother bought a low kay series 8 Rx7 from japan, 2 sets of 18"s with rubber and is using it as a track car. the car looked to be in mint condition and he paid somewhere around $18k for it! incredible!

Thanks mate. I just put a deposit down on an EB1. I’m sick of following little old ladies around driving pristine examples, every time I corner them in a car park they say that their car isn’t for sale or that they have promised to sell it to someone else.
The example I bought is a little bit more tricked up than the Hondamatic stocky I was looking for. I think that it’s got high comp pistons in a stock head, twin carb, 4 speed manual, roll cage, good suspension & engine. The guy I bought it off has 3 EB’s and he is selling 2 of them – he is keeping his circuit racer. It is a bit rough in places but it is fun with a few trick bits and light (650kg).
