One is left wondering if Jaguar's marketing department has done a Fonzie and jumped the shark.
Their approach certainly breaks the old marketing rule of thumb that it is cheaper to retain customers than attract new ones. In this case it appears Jaguar is happy to jettison their old customer base and chase new ones (with different motoring needs). But at what cost? The other problem that Jaguar is having is that large sedans and bloated EV SUV are presently having a hard timing selling in the market. Apparently, in the US, there is a year's supply of XF gathering dust in the dealer's yards. May I suggest that Jaguar ditch their present strategy and adopt a crash development program (like they did during WW2 with the Avro Lancaster). Get the engineering rights to a body-on-frame 4WD vehicle. Dust off the old Jaguar AJ-8 V8 at the prime mover. Beg, borrow, steal a 48V mild hybrid system for the ancillaries to give a slight nod to the greenies. Make sure there is acres of leather in the interior and lots of computer displays. Don't forget to have lots of computer controlled 4WD modes (road, sand, rock, mud, grass, driveway, carpark, curbs, garage, etc). Throw on some oversized tyres, add lots of accessories (like a bull bar that isn't a bull bar for EU purposes). Get some Lara Croft lookalike to promote it, and Jaguar is on a winner. (Vehicle will spend its life stuck in traffic on British motorways, but, heck, Jaguar will sell heaps of them.) Last edited by whynot; 27-11-2024 at 11:20 AM. Reason: typos |

Gen Z also have insane appreciation for very daggy cars, such as the Rover 75 and AU... OT: here's a few links of the change in zeitgeist, in elections, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TP7V-r4A1rU https://quillette.com/2024/11/06/the...mp-vance-musk/ in young men's perceptions (finally we see a counter to feminism?) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XapCqE1w6k and even in fashion, where the bearded authentic lumberjack in skinny jeans is out, and by waiting a generation I have finally become a fashion item as coastal grandad is in amongst the young eclectic set: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/fashion/...piers-brosnan/ https://www.telegraph.co.uk/fashion/...ear-cardigans/ I would argue after the marketing guy's vid I linked above, THIS is EXACTLY the time you want to get retro at Jaguar and go 'old man'... All this goes beyond car talk, but it's all feeding into creating the moment right now, where Jag are launching for their survival.

Anyone else get the feeling that Tata never really wanted the Jaguar part of JLR? That's why Jaguar never went all in on SUV's like Porsche, BMW, MB, Audi did, that was all left to Landrover.

The reality is, that approach has revived many companies over the last 20 years, including Cadillac, Porsche, Bentley and Rolls.

The issue isn't the weird advertising, it's the fundamental change in WHAT Jaguar is. They're abandoning their slot as a "Premium" (yet affordable) brand, and trying to carve out a new niche as some kind of all electric top-end "exotic" I can understand their motivation. If you accept the premise that we're RAPIDLY heading into new territory, an all-electric market, dominated by suv-types, and with decreasing car ownership. Then hey may have feared getting caught in the logjam, and they have looked desperately for a way to keep distinguishing Jaguar. Especially since their sibling already have a strong presence in the SUV market. But even then, I think they've gone too far down the rabbit hole. They've decided to chase the "progressive" market, realised that market isn't overall big on cars as prestige items, and so have doubled down and decided to aim for a very particular market. Personally, I think they've missed a huge opportunity. Jaguars have always sold disproportionately well overseas, and that trend has been increasing of late. There's still a big market in America, Eastern Europe, and China, for people who don't want all electric. I also get the sense that there's an increasing divide in the UK, with more people rejecting the spread of wokish thinking. And ultimately, at the risk of greatly over-simplifying, if you want to sell CARS, then you're better off targeting the anti-woke market
