Actually I think Ford make quite a bit from the diesel Territory, most profitable model in the whole local range I think I heard.

Diesels give a higher profit margin for dealers. They upsell customers on basis of fuel savings but charge between $3000 and $5000 over a petrol (depending on make/model). They then slug you extra with service costs.

I do acknowledge diesels have their plus points and some people just prefer diesel engines but it seems buyers are swayed to diesels in showrooms then ripped off the whole time of ownership without actually realising it.

^^^^ The one we just bought has 3 years free scheduled servicing. On top of quite a good discount for end of financial year and a pretty reasonable trade-in it made it a relatively easy decision to make. We wanted the AWD Titanium which only comes in diesel so had no choice of engine but I was keen to try out the diesel. So far, I'm quite impressed with it.

I always liked the low-end torque of diesels, but the EcoBoost engines really deliver that AND better high rpm performance. Especially the twin-turbo EcoBoost engines. They have a lot less lag than the single turbo 4 cyls. This video makes the 2.7L look very appealing.

Its quite quite likely it sells more, apart from peoples perception features like AWD in Titanium and 2.7 Towing capacity seem to sway Buyers, even if they don't need it..
But is/was it enough to cover the development costs? or who cares the Government paid for it

here's a comparison
They recon the 2.7 Eco boost will deliver near 239kw 450Nm in the F150 at about 9-10L/100

Compared to the Territory's Lion 2.7 V6 which has 140kw 440Nm

TBH I think FoA are making the right move in splitting the 5 and 7 seaters between the Edge and Everest, and given the success of the Ranger, I think the Everest may just do OK. As for Edge? I like it.

Problem is none of the pickup based SUVs have sold all that well. (Challenger, MUX and Colorado 7)
So it will be interesting if the Everest can buck the trend.
