I'm not sure what alternative universe you live in but the Australian government has a revenue problem and they're not likely going to let go of a revenue source, look at the taxes on fuel per litre + GST on top of the various 'levy'.

Or speed camera proliferation in VIC is another good example and fines for 3km/h over the limit.

Look at Japan, the older cars get the more expensive they get to register then they export them to Australia and NZ - that's also another alternative.

Something to do with 15 years or older. I wonder how all the older Dekotora trucks (and cars) still manage to be registered. They must have some type of club scheme there. That little Mazda Titan shown is at least 25 years old.

Anyone know for sure?

I wouldn't buy a station wagon but everyone's last ride is in one

Sorry, I mean 'shooting brake' which is the fancy name these days.

Might be an AU Falcon on 'historic' plates

I say good luck to them if they are getting away it.

Come on , I reckon they're cool. I would ride in one (maybe not buy one)
I would love to go to Japan just to see a Dekotora show.

Why would I be jealous of someone with a 25 year old plus car having to rort a permit scheme to keep their tip run car on the road? I got no dramas paying full rego, and currently do on three cars so stop projecting

I won't be the one complaining when the rest of you are paying $800+ to register your classic car you are lucky to drive once a week because the people gaming the system ruined it for the people doing the right thing.

Take it up with the rusty TF Rodeo club

I would be more concerned about TAC insurance (third party) if one of these guys is not using the vehicle for said intended purpose and kills someone.

I think you’re getting a little bit excited comparing tax avoidance and welfare cheats to a club reg loophole

I’m defending it but I’m not pointing my finger at anyone, if you can get away with it, I say go for it, nothing I can do about it.

I’d agree wholeheartedly. Old mate with the Rodeo prob threw the plates on for a sneaky tip run in the old girl but the flip side is if it went south it’s gonna get nasty for all concerned.

One mans trash is another’s treasure. I make no judgement about who’s car is on club rego, well except the Rodeo maybe.

Misuse will not void TAC if you are in accident and that is fact.

Especially if the plates don’t belong on that car. Let’s face it, it’s certainly possible

Club rego isn't a loophole though. It's a simple 25 year old law. I own 5 cars - four cars on club rego. 2 are good, solid weekenders and 2 are just cheap bangers that I keep rego'd just because I can. They're certainly not worth me paying $1600 a year in registration for to keep them on the road, but I can because of this and someone else can after me. It's my prerogative what I want to do with the car. It's not against the law to drive to the supermarket or to the tip and I don't use them for personal gain.

The only thing I'm exploiting is my right as a 13 year car club member to cheap registration without breaking any laws.

Perhaps they should make club reg cars have road worthy checks once a year.

Might get rid of a few of them. I'm sure the people who have these cars for the real purpose would have these cars in tip top shape.

Here in N.S.W. Every Police HWP vehicle has Number Plate recogniton cameras (& an increasing number of general duties Vehicles Too.)
It'd be no real Biggies to "flag" conditional Number plates, & have a few more "random" Log book inspections. Could/Should/Would weed out the Abusers..

Just out of curiosity how does the club scheme insure cars and how they are used. Anyone know.

I have 5 cars on club rego from a 1926 Model T Ford to an 82 ESP Ghia and every one with our club rules has to have a pink slip every year like any regular car.
The way it should be imo.

when older cars go on the CPS they have to have a roadworthy, so do more modern cars when they get re-registered

Sooooo, if I have to have a roady every year so should you

As the Victorian system is a 'permit' and I know that the cars details and 'permit' number are kept on a separate database within the main database, I doubt very much whether the number plate recognition cameras would have access to their details. Even if they did, what would it achieve? it would tell the officers that car has paid its permit fee, that the owner has no warrants - move on, next car!!!!!!!!!

However I will ask my mate, the HW policeman what he knows
