Bit of a disparity?
So in this circumstance, we need to take away a car the wife is happy and comfortable with and replace it with a subjectively better one, that we must now forcibly coerce her to drive because that is the responsible thing to do as an enthusiast?

I gave my missus a BA xr6t and I drive a BF GT. No real disparity there. She doesn't want a GT, I have asked her if she would like me to buy her one, and I don't want an xr6t.

I damn well know if I was forced to buy a car I didn't want, no matter how good it was I, I would resent it the whole time because it wasn't what I wanted...

Not in all cases but you often find that the wife/soccer mum, usually only does a 1 hour trip in the vehicle... Drop the kids of to school, maybe go to their casual job, do a bit of shopping and thats about it... Where as the male can spend anywhere up to 3 hrs a day for work, it makes more sense for him to drive the newer vehicle that should be more cost effective to run...

Why spend the money or go in to debt for a new vehicle that you don't particularly need... What about if you buy her and the kids the newer car and drove the beater yourself, isn't that the same thing... Being able to own and afford a second car these days is an expense that most families can only just afford to justify...

What if the handbrake comes out and puts an end to your spending spree on you 40 year old car because its not good enough for her... She only wants new cars in the house, if they are out of warranty then she doesn't want them... Same deal, I'd bet you'd ***** and whinge about having to give up your dream as well... Its a joint decision, that usually ends in her favour but it was a joint decision none the less LOL

I don't think it matters if the wife is driving a 20 year old car, all that matters is that the vehicle is well maintained, of roadworthy condition and most importantly... As long as she is bloody happy with it and not bitching at you about it, then who freakin' cares life is good and enjoy the peace and quiet while you can before she discovers all the receipts for all those parts you've bought... LOL

Regards

Hulk, you don't have kids yet eh?

My wife has the territory, a safe car but not expensive. My reason for this is safety is a priority - a priority for my family, not the preservation of the car. If my wife has to choose between a good parking spot to save time and give her more time at home rather than parking far away from other cars she knows to take the good park that saves time. So I don't care if I get a few door dings.

If I put her in a new Titanium that owed me 50k, the marginal increase in safety achieved is minimal, the depreciation harsh, and the extra stress....pah, no chance!

I choose well, buy at 5yrs old for 25% of the new retail with sub 100ks and sell at 10yrs for whatever I can get. If the Terri went to simsmetal it will have still served me very well.

The car serves you, you don't serve the car.

More city people thinking

Where we are (pop 60,000) nothing is more than 10 mins away. So going to work and back takes all of about 30mins.

I very rarely take the responsibility of driving my wife's car, she'd have my nuts if it got damaged in any way shape or form. We also rarely take it out where it's going to be left in a public car park, so we take the ute pretty much everywhere. She has an ST Focus, I have a GS ute.

I laugh in the face at some of you guys. You're more than happy to put your partner and family in a car with negative 5 ANCAP rating with no safety features, a bazillion K's in fear of getting a shopping dent in it? Some of you really need to adjust your priorities.

Oh, 100Kmh crash in either a Getz or Falcon will end just as bad for both. If you think having a Falcon around you will save you at 100Kmh, maybe you should look at some crash tests done at 60Kmh.

We own a GS 315 and a AU FORTE.
The GS never goes shopping and my wife drives it to work because she has her own parking space under cover.
I drive the AU to work because it sits in the sun all day.

Most places we go (apart from work) we go together and we decide what car to take, depending if the car will be safe or not.
The AU is still a nice car to drive.
Stupid thread. I don't know why I am responding.

ps. we taught our girls how to drive in our old AU and it ended up with dings all over it, The youngest still drives it(400,000kms)and loves it.

Either on price/quality/safety/reliability. For example if you went out and bought yourself a new fpv GT/f6 and the wife/family a hyundai getz/ smartcar or old 2nd hand falcon etc etc. Its Like eating in a fancy restaurant whilst the family is next door at McDonalds...dont feel right does it?

Some car enthusiasts park up their pride and joy in the garage or drive it off to work of a morning and leave their family to roll around in a bomb (Comparatively speaking)... isnt this a disgraceful manourvre? An unloving act?

Some of these enthusiasts dont let their family/wife/partner even drive their cars freely. Buying these cheaper cars to keep their pride and joy to themselves? What kind of people are they?

Wouldnt you want you wife/family to ride in the safest roomiest and luxurious ride possible not relegate them to a second rate experience?? At least have a 50/50 split (or better in the wife favour) between your car and the wife/family car.

What do you drive as opposed to your partner? Is it at least on par 50/50 with yours? If not....why not!
Going by my own observation most women I see these days seem to drive better cars than their husbands/partners.

A very 19xx vision. I don't tell my missus what to drive, she does that herself. She has the big safe people moving Territory, 8 years old purchased new for a small fortune (to us) and now looks like it's EIGHTY years old via carparks and a general distaste for washing it. It gathers more dust than km's these days. But it's hers. She has a Ka for fun, 3 grand 2 airbags, I might have to get self righteous and force her to sell that!!! Not. She uses it every day as it's cheap to run and she loves it. She's not stupid, and she doesn't need me to tell her what to drive. And that is that.

If she tried it on me I'd have a cow. She hasn't even driven one of my cars since 2002 (yes 2002), as she knows how OCD I am over them. And thats just fine, but her choice.

When i met my wife she had 1994 Corolla Seca that she owned and loved , i had a van
( company car) , previously i had owned Toyota Landcruisers , the wife to be objected due to their size , so i compromised and bought her a 3 yr old Discovery V8 , we were both happy , it wore out so i bought a Diesel TD5 Disco , again both happy , its now a little tired so 2 weeks ago i bought our first new car , 2014 Terry TS AWD diesel , i rang my beloved of 18 years and said , hi I'm looking at your new car , her reply was , its your thing i trust you . She loves her new Terry.
So you ask what do i drive daily , AU 1 toner V8 ute , 240,000 and still going strong .
2 things i never do , buy cheap tyres or shoes for my wives car and my families feet .

Nope.. She alternates between a new skoda and an Audi...why because they are more luxurious, less km, newer.

The 2007 BF2 mint xr6t with 7000km sits there and gathers dust, wanna buy it? Sits next to the ls1 also gathering dust.

Wife has always driven the better car up to a point, see she rarely changes cars,,,'
She hates to see them go... We bought an AU S1 Futura in 2002 to replace the EA Wagon I bought before we got together as the EA was starting to play up.... We replaced that finally in 2013 with a 2008 TS Terri... We still have the AU.... But we figured one of the kids would like it and at 210k on the clock its still quite a good car. I change cars all the time... But just usually work hacks but the last few years have been doing them up.

I rarely drive the Terri unless I have too, She doesn't like the BA and its just a hassle moving the seats etc.. If we go out in the Terri she normally drives, BA I drive... The Lane she hates with a passion.... Dunno why she just does.... She is quite happy to jump in the AU and take it for a spin tho... Go Figure..

Husband may have high paying job with car allowance so husband buys C63.

Wife does not have a job or car allowance so..gets something less valuable.

Why cant people buy what they can afford or enjoy without forcing your snooty class type distinction on them?

Many people do have a company car but can only afford to run an older car. Nothing wrong with that?

Down Tiger.

Just responding to the OPs original post...why a husband may have a more expensive car than the wife. ie it's a tax deduction.

I'd say it's comparatively rare to drop $150K cash on a car...they are generally leased.

Not sure what got up your goat..

I have a BF XR8 ute and the missus has a Hyundai Getz.
I bought the Getz for her and she only had a few requests, it had to be auto, be a 5 door and had to be a small economical car.

I probably drive the Getz more than her now anyway, because we live a minute from her work.

Everyone is happy and we both win.

Woops .... linked the wrong quote. Actually agreed with you on that and went to push 'agree' and quote something else from the OP but got things swapped around ......

As I said which is what you said:

Many people do have a company car but can only afford to run an older car. Nothing wrong with that?
