But then again I suspect there was some sort of brake issue with that car anyway, they were always spongey as hell and always needed a decent shove to get the thing to really slow. Flushed the fluid, fitted new pads and rotors and everything else but it still made no difference. |

First car, N13 Pulsar, I fitted one of those fans you stick in the intake pipe that are advertised to help atomise the fuel and bla bla bla. One of my friends actually bought it though so I never kept it long.
Same car the rear muffler came apart at the front so had the local Carline fit a 2 inch cat back. The ******* didn't even change it at the flange, and had the new 2 inch section welded onto the last foot of the old exhaust and looked like the apprentice had done it. There was still welding wire hanging off. That car became too much of a hassle to keep registered before I could do my suspension and CA18 swap. Wasted a few grand on an EB Falcon trying to put a V8 into it. Should've stuck with my original plan of putting in a DOHC six, but I found an $800 V8 Fairlane that I thought would have everything I needed. I bought an Explorer manifold and GT40P heads before I did enough research to suggest they're still pretty restrictive, and before I gave up for good I had about $15k worth of planned engine, transmission, suspension and brake mods. The BF I had a Hurricane/Redback 2.5 combo that I wasn't happy with how low it hung. I bought a 3 inch 100cell cat to put in and took it to the 2nd most local Carline this time. My discussion with them over why I went with that cat, believing it to flow better, mustn't have explained I was still after a performance system and I ended up with a press bent centre section (as we agreed a smaller muffler would allow the exhaust to be tucked up more and i was told Redbacks were pretty quiet) that probably performed worse. I couldn't simply refit the old centre as they had cut out the old centre right behind the muffler as opposed to undoing the flange some 6 inches further behind. Re EBC Greenstuff - I used the in both ELs and theyve been excellent every time. Might be rotors? Incorrect fitment? Dodgy batch?
Done a whole heap of stuff, this is only what I can remember: Putting 2 12" boxed fusion subs in the boot with a massive amp...all unsecured. Bounced around like crazy, number plate rattling away. Gutting a perfectly good high flow 3" cat because my car wouldnt rev properly. Droned like crazy. Turned out to be the fuel filter. Putting a second hand 2.5" exhaust on. muffler had rusted from the inside out, middle pipe mustve gone under the wheel on the highway but the whole middle section was yanked cleanly away at 100kph. Exhaust note after was impressive. Cuting holes in my intake everywhere for "better flow" Trying to change my own brake pads a few hours before driving from esperance to perth. Somehow managed to destroy one of the brake pistons and something else as well. Had to brake by shifting down gears and then handbrake. Didnt put the wheel back on properly either, nuts were halfway off by the time I got to ravy.

When I was 17 I cut the roof off a 4dr hillman with a hacksaw, instant convertible, no other mods and drove it around the block. Half way around the back doors fell outwards at the b pillar. No problem lifted them back into place and tied a piece of rope between them across the car to stop them falling out again. Drove on and by the time I got back home there was a definite sag in the middle and the end of the gearbox and front of the tailshaft were dragging on the ground until the tailshaft fell out as I went up my bumpy driveway.LOL! Total fail!
Lesson learn't there's more to making a convertible than just removing the roof.

Brother had a EL wagon that he didnt really look after.
Came home one day and he said the muffler was making weird noise. I go outside and see the rear muffler has rusted out and the pipe coming out of the rear muffler was only just held in place. A well placed kick from my work boots removed the offending pipe and he drove it for another 2 years with just a hole in the back of the rear muffler. No more rattling noise though :p Bought some lowered AU front springs to put in my BF ute. Ended up Waaayy to low and they came out the next day. After my Starion was written off i needed a car on the road ASAP. I had a Cordia Turbo in the backyard id tinker. Roughly bogged up the rust and sprayed over it, got a new windscreen and got a very very lenient roadworthy :p Had lowered rear springs i had laying around, cut the fronts to suit. Had a cannon on the back to replace the stuffed rear muffler. Bought another bonnet for $3 and put some sierra cosworth style vents in it and a fake wrx scoop just above the BOV. Was built on purpose to be a ricer. Put an intercooler in the front, wound the boost up to just under fuel cut (14psi) and drove it for ages until the cops said "if i see this driving around again you wont have a licence", deregistered it a week later after buying a new Starion. Was made up from cheap/2nd hand parts and a fun thing to drive, and the motor just wouldnt die, although you didnt do oil changes, just topped up the oil regulary and changed the filter every 6 months :p

Being 17 I wanted a 'performance' exhaust... "Straight through is what you want" says a mate of mine, "Let's the exhaust gases get out quicker, makes you go faster too!"
So a pair of tin snips and 10 minutes later I had an '(cut)open straight through middle muffler'... straight onto the road below that is, sounded like a fart breaking the sound barrier through a pair of jeans. |

I had a Mark 2 GT Cortina years ago, thought I do the right thing and took it to Pedders for the whole package, I was on apprentice wages and it cost me about two weeks wages, poor thing was never the same, the ride was terrible and handling was worse, could not really afford to change it back as the old springs and shocks got scrapped so sold the car

my failure? "moding" my front bumper by making - and hoping - it all stuck together with a bit of duct-tape, here and there. (I smashed it running into a gutter). just a couple of days later, the front end gave way. forcing the right foglight to fall out and dragged it all the way home, still got it on today.

I put a pair of spotlights on the front bumper of my NC Fairlane.
The car was lowered with Koni shocks & Lovells springs (cost about $2K at the time) If you drove nose first down a steep driveway the spotlights would catch at the bottom and get pulled down. Get out, lift them back up, keep driving...
