I personally wouldnt pay more than 30-40K for a 69 XW GT in need of a full resto, in regards to this particular car its impossible to say without seeing it and seeing how much work it needs..
What's it worth as a fully restored car? then work backwards from there, i.e: if a fully restored version of the same car is worth 100K and it needs 50K of work its probably worth 50K?

Spot on,there is so much histeria around at the moment that people are forgetting things like this, and seeing $$ signs instead of looking at it rationally.
The ph1 clevo XW mentioned above, while needing some cleaning up,certainly does'nt need a complete strip and refresh,I have been looking for an XAGT hardtop myself, and there are a few Ive looked at that the owners were looking to cash in,but you know what, they either still have them or sold at way less than they thought they would get,of course the odd uneducated/uninformed person will pay over the odds, you cant use the $$$ asked for and gotten for the top of the line unrestored cars as a guide, these are doubly as rare as the rest, even more so..

Absolutely correct, we cant really use sales history of immaculate examples or rare examples or ADVERTISED prices as a good reference.. it simply doesnt work like that. As you say "hype" and hysteria is playing a big part, just because a car is advertised for 100K doesnt make all others are worth that... in most cases cars sell for far less than their advertised price anyway, especially if the condition or options vary's too much between them.

In some cases it would cost more to restore a car than what its realistically worth! But people look at the perceived "value" of good cars, see a "bargain" think they can tart it up cheaply to ping and get greedy..

Not the old 289's. Geoghan's 65 mustang had 58 wins from 62 starts with a wheezor. He wasn't up against any clevos but he sure made a mess of the 327 monaros.

You'll be amazed how well cars can clean up with a good chemical clean and scrub then polish, the only issue is damage and rust, discolored and dirty paintwork can be cleaned and polished, especially in the concealed areas like the bay, ive seen absolute filty grimey pigstyes restored without needing much paining to look "immaculate original condition".
I wouldnt go restoring it till you're 100% convinced it needs it...

congratulations on the purchase - looks like a great original car and a fantastic combo - red/manual/black trim - doesn't get much better IMO. I agree with the other guys, give it a carefull clean up/detail, keep it original, and enjoy.

Congratulations and welcome to the GT owners club !

I look forward to seeing the after cleaning/polishing pics, it should come up quite well.
It's great to buy a car knowing it will not depreciate 50% in a few years.

nice car, u cant go wrong with a red trim black car, as 4v man said clean it up and join the survivors club if u can rather than restore it, your wallet will thank u if u flip it down the track in the future

cheers rod

ps there was a full bodied genuine 69 manual xw gt over in perth about 10 year ago that ran deep into the 10s with no nitros, very few cleveland powered gts can make that claim!

Holden did a good job of supporting their teams with this engine under group C then Group A, its a pity Ford never did...

But didn't you say the Clevo held a 6-1 win over the wheezor, that would include GRP-C rules too yeah.
That would mean the Clevo is comparable against the 308.

How is a 308 relevant to this guy buying a GT?

Well i guess it isn't, but it wasn't me who started going on about Clevo's being the bees knees when this guy was enquiring about a Windsor powered GT.
You got that argument going, he's obviously happy with his choice and apparently there are a few other wheezor fans too.

Still doesnt explain why you're pushing your "holden wheelbarrow" in a thread about XWGT's... Jealousy maybe?
In any event the XWGT had 2 major engine offerings hence why both were discussed.. as a point of reference and as a point about 'values" of each..
There was no arguement, but either way your irrelevant trolling doesnt add any value to the discussion, other than to appear as a thinnly veiled attempt to some how discredit the Cleveland..... which is impossible to do anyway, because you can't change history.

Excellent! take plenty of before and after pics, especially if you're going to tidy it up, you'll be amazed at the difference!

Good stuff, be patient but keep at it with washing and chemical cleaning too, even cutting compound on parts that look too grimmy... you'll be amazed at how things can come up, and if you can preserve its originality you'll have a real desirable classic, as there's not many left in original condition.

Nice pic up.

Remember, this is a Thread about an XW GT, not another Clevo vs Windsor Thread.

You have all been told.

I see a new record has been set for a Ph1 at auction in Sydney.
The vendor was looking at $150k mark and got $230k.

Not bad for a wheezor HOey
