Wellington is the San Francisco of the Southern Hemisphere.

Onemadman, nice use of pallets to secure the IBC, never seen or thought of that method before (I’d usually put empty pallets the same height or cross strap the IBC in the centre of the deck).

Picked up my old VG from Freo port today.
$5k all up roll on roll off Auckland to Perth, not too bad.
400kw LS3 used 16.8l/100km towing there and back, slightly more than a BYD Shark that’s not towing anything.

Macron's ploy to keep Le Pen's party out of power seems to be backfiring. Actions have unintended consequences.

Not going to the work Christmas party!

Can't stand it! I don't drink, so all it ends up being is me sitting and watching everyone get drunk and talking crap. I then get asked a bunch of stupid questions, the same I got asked every year prior, then after the meal, we then all sit in a circle to talk more crap (why a circle I don't know, but its the same every year). I'm then supposed to be thankful for the night, even though I chose the cheapest thing on the menu and didn't drink $100 in booze. I then go home knowing I'll never get those 3 hours of my life back.

And then when you think it's over, the same thing happens again on Christmas Eve for "drinks", including the sitting in a circle thing. Again, I don't drink. Last year, I got offered a bottle of apple juice, which is not casually consumed when you are a diabetic. So, with nothing else on hand, I got given a bottle of warm water. Again, I'm supposed to be grateful for that, even though I cost them nothing.

On both occasions, it's just false display of "look how good we are to our staff", completely ignoring the harsh scrutiny bestowed on us for the rest of the year. This person talks too much, this person doesn't talk enough, this person was 20 seconds late (even though they stayed back 20 minutes to make up), this person is too slow, this struggles with this or that................................

Probably one of the key reasons why I hate Christmas!

Man, you have to get out of this relationship.

Though being a non drinker too, I would probably be the same if I ever worked for a company. The bottle of warm water sounded like a nice "caring" touch.

Sit down and have an expensive meal, sure you can have a non-acholic drink of your choice, talk a bit of banter (optional) then go home when you feel like it.
Take control & f*** the others.

Hopefully they don't invite you next time.

Our Xmas party is today.
I quick read through the last part of the week makes me think I am the only one not going.
I bailed on Tuesdays party as well, after being invited with 24hrs notice because many RSVPs were a decline. Trying to bulk up the numbers, nice.
No thanks, I already spend too much of my waking hours with you all and the truth is if I had the option I would spend zero time with you all.

I get you DFB, best to spend the time with who you want, and by yourself is not a bad choice.

I stopped going to company Christmas parties years ago. After a while you develop a reputation for not going to work functions and it’s easy to decline and no one cares.

I do attend farewells and retirement lunches/dinners for colleagues that I’ve worked with over many years.

I'm a bit lost at the moment, the new car has been a big and pleasant distraction, but I now have a lot to figure out. I also have a LOT I want to say right at this moment but I'm choosing to button my mouth.

Thanks for the comments, I'm glad its not just me who hates the work function thing.

We don't even get a Christmas party.
Not that I'd go if we did. Just because I work with them, doesn't mean that I want to socialise with them.

I've always echoed my mothers thoughts on this, same as yours. As in, I spend all day with these people, why would I want to spend my spare time with them too. Bluntly, I only spend time with these people because I get money to do so, nothing more. To me, I see these the Christmas party as unpaid work that robs me of my own personal time. And that's why I don't play the ***-kissing game of being grateful for the "free" meal and a glass of warm water.

It's also got nothing to do with the employer being grateful for their staff, because if they could do it all themselves without paying others to be there, well, they 100% would. The employee is just a necessary evil, a liability. That's why I always laugh when I hear or read about a business thanking their staff because its all a farse, a public relations stunt.

And if all that makes me sound like a grumpy ingrate, well, nothing is forcing an employer to play the Christmas party game.

Reading this put a smile on my face, especially what I highlighted in bold, I quite agree, with what I got to put up with some work collogues antics.
Out of curiosity why do you go to the Xmas parties? I've already told my colleagues that I would never socialise with them out of hours.
As for the company offering Xmas parties, that went out of the door years ago, I now certainly don't miss them for host of reasons.

Only a few days back I was thinking it’s time to resuscitate the “Bah Humbug” thread if there is one, or start it if not.

Over to you, Mr DFB.

I had a couple of “feel good” moments the last few days. First the apprentice was genuinely happy/pleased/excited about success of the in-depth repair on his Beemer where I’d supervised and assisted. Trying to teach him how to think jobs through, not just rip-tear-bust. Second, an acquaintance had unexpectedly lost his mother-in-law; the family basically looked on him to “man up” and oversee the funeral plus peripheral stuff. He’d had nobody outside the family to unpack it all with thereafter, so I was happy to stand and listen for a good 30-40 minutes.

My work mob had go-karts with open bar afterwards for our Christmas party. I don't drink and didn't stay back afterwards but those that did had a great time!
Also doing a $30 Kris kringle and afternoon bbq for Christmas break-up. All in all good fun.

We're actually doing three Xmas parties at my work: our department had an 80s themed finger food and drinks afternoon event last week, the site is holding a pulled pork BBQ lunch as a Xmas and outage thanks event next week (on site, so no alcohol) and then my boss is hosting a team Xmas BBQ at his place at the end of the week preceding Xmas, including families. I don't drink either, but happy to engage with my colleagues. I generally don't stay very long at these sorts of events tho. There's only so much soft drink you can drink!

Might sound a bit silly but 2 weeks ago last night I nearly lost my wife in what was such a simple accident. She tripped over something (not really sure what) and split her head on a solid coffee table as well as various severe bruising over the rest of her body. She was choppered out from home to a major hospital for what turned out to be life saving surgery. The split in her head was large and deep. 1mm further and it was her brain the doctors said. She lost over 3 litres of blood and was not in a good way. Well we got the clearance on Friday arvo that she would be fine providing she took it easy for a few more weeks and gave up tripping. The photo gives you some idea of how bad it was.

Place where I worked for 18 years, I worked 9 Christmas periods.
It was shift work, with varied sign on / off times, result, no parties.
If you worked Christmas Day, you celebrated on your own at lunch break, with management putting on cans of Coke, soft drink, and a coffee table with chips, peanuts and slices of Xmas Pudding, no expense spared. Joy to the world.
Saved bringing your own lunch or trying to find a cafe open.

Yeah, with a foot in each camp, I know how that works. It's also why I'm not totally on long-service-leave, I simply can't shut down my own business during peak growing period. I don't have anyone to take over if I went away, so if you don't work, you don't get paid.

Chairman's Award: Chairman's Award - Issue reason: Your outstanding contributions to this community have not gone unnoticed. IN my view you are a worthy recipient of the (rarely used) Chairman's Award.

A beautiful cool change has blown through Sydney this afternoon; coolest it’s been in over a week. I’m really looking forward to a good nights’ sleep without sweat and mozzies.

This is the key. The crew that I work with is good. The people are good, and we generally all get along well. But, work is all that we have in common. And that's the problem with a lot of work get-togethers. You're not at work, but work is all you have in common, so the main topic of discussion is...... work. I'd rather get paid to discuss work, on work premises, not for free at some park or restaurant. But that's just me.
