Sounds like the odler generation making the same old assumptions and statements about the younger generation that our elders made about us.

Easy to be critical and say 'my first car only cost $XXX' but take off the rose coloured glasses and be realistic.
We've probably all blown $ on cars and other items that in hindsight we shouldn't have.

Car10002 my observation is that you're always asking questions on here but they are actually quite similar in nature

The wages are junk in the LV automotive industry and its associated supporting industries.

Generally the ones who stick around are passionate about what they do - thats why you can get some real skilled and knowledgeable people working these places even though they're virtually living on the poverty line lol.

And we tend to be pretty eccentric people I guess - like the male version of the dreaded horse women (they're god damn weirdos - avoid)

Personal suggestion

Forget what others are doing, do what sits right with you.

If you wanna run an car, go for it

All said and done it’s your money, your car and it has to fit in with your lifestyle, not other peoples

There was a time when cars didn't have heaters - so how did we clear the mist from the inside of the windscreen?

I think the smoke haze deposited on the insides of windscreens actually limited further moisture hazing, to an extent.

None of the young driving age kids in my street who still live at home with mum & dad have new cars.

They drive small cars that are between 4 and 10 years old.

There are a lot of kids driving secondhand Mazda's and Hyundai's in my street.

The mums & dads tend to drive cars of a similar 4 to 10 year age but in the SUV and Dual Cab Ute range and there are a few exceptions with new SUV’s or Dual Cabs.

Most of the mums and dads have a car each which wasn’t the case when I was a youngster, mum has the SUV while dad has the Dual Cab.

Wind the window down by hand and freeze and I can remember in the deep dark recesses of my mind a paper type of material that had a chemical in it to wipe over the inside of the screen while you were driving.

The AC in my Caprice doesn't work and it fogs up in cool weather - window down works a treat to stop it from fogging up.

Otherwise you gotta have the heater on and it gets too warm at windscreen defogging levels and it's like a god damn sauna

What’s wrong with the AC?

Young couple up the road have a WH with no working aircon, wondered if the ‘00s upwards had a particular weak point.

Nah, ac delco compressors arent the most reliable. The only form of working ac in my first car was good old 4x80. When the drivers window regulator died it was 3x80. That was a $50 wrecker fix. The ac compressor would have been $1500 for a reco.

Good ol QRTR windows, great demisters when turned on angle for the air to fly through to the screen.

Heaters yes but AC I've never had. I reckon the old quarter windows flipped all the way around were great for demisting.
Newspaper was a good windscreen clearer device.
I remember driving from Bathurst to Orange once after an overnight stop over sleeping in a Kingswood wagon, just to defrost and warm the cabin up.

I guess, older vs younger can also depend on where you live and how you are influenced.

All the Ecotec compressors leak eventually from the center bands on the compressor - good money spinner

Mine needs new seals, it's been on the to do list for 2 years but I've got a new condenser and receiver drier sitting about for it, awaiting engine out job first then when that happens it'll get done.

Younger generation want to work shorter hours, less work for more pay.

People do not change quickly through the times- evolution takes a little while- so people through the generations are essentially the same.

However, what is different now is computers, smart phones and young people becoming addicted to that instant reality where things just need to be scanned and flicked - short "lol" 2 liners with photos that are finger flicked.

Hours and hours of this on a young brain acts on how the young brain forms- neurons and axon pathways.

These fundamental brain formations prior to age 22 were formed differently prior to the smart mobile computer, when young people had to read books and deep dive into texts.

So what is happening is younger people often have developed their brains in a different way to those generations who had no smart mobile computers.

Still possible for those young people to grow their brains by engaging in deep diving of the brain such as skilled apprentices, uni, etc.

But if a young person develops their brains along both pathways, they will be far more capable in the future than those of us that developed pre smart mobile computers,

I admire your optimism, but can’t share it. I believe we’re already pretty much one generation in too far for a genuine, effective, reshaping of social trajectory.

The gross weight of numbers in the “Don’t know, don’t care, don’t wanna be told” camp is enough to swamp diligence, balance and reasoned discourse.

But Shakespeare wrote such things of the youth in his day- always has been that tension. Always been the case older people despair of younger people and younger people dismissive of older people.

But I agree that there is a fundamental difference now, and I consider that is how digital mobile instant land is shaping young people's minds today. Whether that reshaping will be a good or bad thing remains to be seen with fullness of time....

Good point, also something that you have made me recall it that kids (no I feel old) want to know the solution to a problem but not learn how to get there. You see these questions, even for the most simple take, asked on social media. They will admit they don't want to learn, just the answer to the question goes away.

Gone are the days of fault finding, tracing issues, process of illumination.

Now it's:
"How do I remove wheel?"
*List the steps from removing jack from boot to removing wheel
"Oh, is there an easier way? Don't worry, I'll get dad to do it"
