I remember driving brand new f150 vehicles in 1991. Those trucks gave me a smile on my face just jumping in the cab. Then you started that Windsor 351 and it sounded great. It wasn’t that quick and used a lot of fuel but every time you pressed the accelerator you had a smile on your face. Every time you stopped at a Servo that smile was quickly wiped off. Great cars and times.

Exactly, Thai utes have their place, but not for the prices the Toyota and Ford are charging for such a cheaply made product. In Malaysia they have extremely high tariffs for foreign made vehicles, yet they are paying less for these same Thai utes. Something doesn’t add up

Grey Nomads will cross shop with the newish V8 Petrol Patrol, which claims 14.4L/100 & by all accounts does not achieve that..

I hear those Patrols don't sell well..

180kw 3.0l V6 diesel available by years end, a premium but still cheaper than the Patrol TI-L

Patrol doesnt have a 4.5t towing capacity either so not apples for apples.

Will be perfect for 5th wheelers.

The Y62 looks so ugly that not even a bull bar can fix its munted face. I think its aesthetics are the biggest issue. GUs look 1000 times better as do new 200 series.

And you think this thing isn't cheaply made? They start at 27k in the US

Buyers are being considerably more ripped off buying one of these than a Ranger or Hilux.

You might be surprised. They are becoming popular with some grey nomads. A lot cheaper than the series 200 Landcruiser, fuel economy similar to them towing and a lot better payload. You might be surprised the number of Landcriser owners selling 200 series and buying Y62 Patrol and very happy they changed.
When the Series 300 comes out soon it has been reported that it will only be available in a petrol(probably 5.7 ltrs) and the Ram and Patrol will be on par with the Toyota.

Generally, these trucks are bought to be either a statement or to do real work for their owners,
I don't know if a 3.0 diesel F150 would throw up more questions than answers or would it
complement the Ranger and its new 2.0 Panther diesel and 10-speed auto...

The guys prepared to spend $80K and up on a trucks would be more inclined to go big diesel,
the 6.7 V8 Powerstroke in the F250, goes hard and actually gives decent fuel economy

Ive also heard of one long term Landcruiser owner going to a petrol Landcruiser, as diesels have gotten too complex and expensive to fix. Money isnt an issue for this person but its the reliability as there are some issues with modern diesels now.

If Ford Aus had to pick one, the F250 makes more sense. But now they share the same cab, so a lot of the body parts can be used on both, it makes more sense to offer both than it did in 2001. Being a small market, I would limit the number of configurations to what’s popular. Maybe just 2 or 3 trim levels. (XLT, Lariat, and Platinum), all in FX4 off-road. I wouldn’t bother with the SuperCab, just offer a single cab XLT for commercial. I guess offer XLT with 2wd. That 3L Power Stroke diesel looks good, but I think I would take the 3.5L EcoBoost. F250 is getting a 7.3L V8 petrol option soon. Hybrids should be here by around 2020 also.

There was word earlier this year that a senior exec from Ford Asia Pacific
was looking into getting diesel F Truck for our region, not sure how he went...

A lot of farmers I know who use Toyota's are running from the v8 diesels.
All say the same thing, plenty of power but they are too complex to repair themselves and expensive when something does go wrong.
The older turbo 6 traybacks are going for big $$.

Just what I'm hearing.

Farmer I'm working for, missus got a batch of bad fuel in their V8 Landcruiser and kept driving it till it shut itself down. He's got a nice bill of $18 000. He told me Injectors alone were $1800 each to replace.

I think the need for Diesel engines isn’t as much of an issue today with modern petrol engines.
I’m really not sure what the diesel obsession is all about, it’s a European and Australian thing. I know I’d you compare something like an 80 series landcruiser petrol engine at around 25L/100km to the diesel at around 15L/100km it made sense back then, but today I don’t see the logic. Like all those diesel fart-box VW Golfs getting around, why?

Don't know about diesels in cars but I wouldn't have anything less in a real truck, big or small. Nothing like the torque of a diesel for shifting a load.

Not talking about real trucks. I’m talking about the soccer mum SUV, the dual cab ute that only sees shopping bags placed in the back and never a real load, and the 4x4 that never leaves the tarmac. Ie, the 99%.

Funny you say that, i have a DMax current one with 270000 on it! Trading it in, thought the new navara might be good, took it for a drive. So harsh, noisy, only power for about 1000revs of the dial, uncomfortable, and driving like I like to drive was using at least 50% more fuel!. And that was the STX. Couldnt believe it. Hopped back in my Dmax and it was comfy, quiet, and had a sort of effortless cruisy power (3.0 diesel much bigger than the navara).

Decided its another DMax that I would be wanting.
