oops, that means we should call the Falcon Ute a pickup... ...but it's actual name is "Falcon Ute", so both still are correct.

Is it Australia or Usa? So my answer is always Ute.

If you think those are bad, I was working with someone recently that said 'aloomonom', instead of aluminium. I almost lost it, it was the first time had ever heard that word said it real life. Usually only hear it on American TV shows.

Can't believe there is even any doubt about it...
We live in australia... Despite America's best efforts to impose itself upon us, and the rest of the world, it is a ute. A "truck's" predominant purpose is to transport cargo and requires an endorsed licence. A vehicle which was manufactured to be a compromise between cargo and passenger duties remains a utility. |

They're called trucks in the USA to avoid paying federal taxes/excises associated with fuel consumption.
Nice loop hole. another nice loop hole (of times past) the old mustangs use to lean right out and not accelerate in 4th gear 25mph / WOT to get past the drive by noise testing. Given the VW scenario, I should probably precede the above sentence with "alledgedly" |

Hilux, Ranger, F trucks etc are trucks, not ute's, a ute is a car style vehicle with a ute tub on the back.
I have a ute and it drives nothing like the 4x4 trucks do, I drive a hilux for work and they are definitely not a ute.

Further by your definition a 4.5 tonne canter truck is a ute because you can drive it on a car license.

Just got back from a few days away and on the way home we called in on some people we know who own a cattle property.
We were talking about grandkids and he was saying that his grand daughter was giving him a hand to lift some stuff off the "tilley". Haven't heard the term for years but another for the mix. Also, I wonder if these "truck" drivers feel obliged to "keep left" when instructed? No? Oh... edit: sorry link takes you to a subscription page but I'm sure we've all seen "trucks keep left" type signs.

Don't see any mention of Hilux or Ranger on this definition of a Ute:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truck Seriously, if it's on the internet it must be true... edit: ....and furthermore, Your Honour, may I submit as further evidence this list of "Pickup Trucks" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_pickup_trucks which the internet (wiki) has already defined as "utes" in oz an nz. M'lud we know that without a shadow of doubt the internet is always correct. The defence rests...

If you knew anything about irony you'd be aware that there was 4.5 kgs worth right there.

I had an argument with my three-year-old daughter a couple of years back because she kept calling the last letter of the alphabet "zee". It took her to go to school this year before she conceded it was "zed". Bloody Sesame Street!

Twenty years ago we were trading in our GQ Patrol the salesman looked over the vehicle and said " nice truck". The missus and I looked at each other and didn't have to say anything.

Ok I'll have another go at this. A UTILITY is a passenger car, Falcon, Valiant, Morris Minor etc, to the BACK OF THE FRONT SEAT. Types such as Ranger and Hi-Lux etc are working vehicles and are lorries (British) or trucks (Yankee). Why do us Brits call the Trunk (Yankee) the Boot when the 'Boot' is the storage space under the drivers seat behind their boots.
