Watched Deliverance tonight. Bad idea since I'm going on a canoe camping trip down the Murray this weekend.

1. A Beautiful Mind
A great story, insight into mental illness, and a powerful performance by Mr Crowe.

2. Schindler's List
As in many instances, I preferred the book, but words can’t do justice to this story, and I rate it highly simply for the power of the story.

3. The African Queen
Great classic movie, with inspiring performances by two screen legends.

4. Ben-Hur
11 Academy awards says it all.

5. Rain Man
The story itself isn’t that exceptional, however the performance of Hoffman, and his chemistry with Cruise is memorable.
(It’s one of the few Cruise films I could ever watch more than once.)

6. The Green Mile
Not usually a King fan, but such a compelling performance by the late Michael Clarke Duncan

7. Gran Torino
A crappy, low-budget, cliché, with an appalling script. Elevated to legendary status solely by the mesmerizing performance of Eastwood.
If you have never liked Eastwood movies, this will surprise you.

8. Love Actually
A soppy feel-good flick, with one of the greatest ensemble-casts ever assembled.

9. Shine
Got to have least one Australian movie in there. Another that deals with overcoming mental illness, and a brilliant portrayal by Geoffrey Rush.

10. Invictus
Ok, so ultimately this a movie about South Africa winning the Rugby World-Cup. However Freeman’s portrayal of Mandela is majestic.

Honourable Mentions to: Driving Miss Daisy, The Blind Side, Invincible, Casablanca, Hotel Rwanda, and I am Sam
(Yeah, it’s a bit gooey, buts it’s also genuinely touching. A great performance from Penn, and you have to love the supporting cast.)

There are a lot of great films mentioned but I'm always up for a good action movie and comedy. One of the more obscure films that most won't have heard of but had me in tears laughing the first time I saw it is one of Peter Jacksons', (Lord Of the Ring director), first films. It's called Meet The Feebles . At first glance you might think it's a kids movie as it's Muppets style puppetry but this is one movie you definitely don't want the kids watching.

Kangaroo Jack

A movie shot in Australia with great scenery and laughs.

Everytime I watch it I always end up laughing out loud.

Another good Aussie film is 'Gettin Square'

I enjoyed 'The tree of life'. You either love that film, or to some it will be worse than watching your own death.

First gf loved it and totally understood the plot, second gf actually didn't get it at all. She also didn't like star wars. We broke up because we couldn't relate.
I agree 100% with this. Pulp Fiction is my favourite movie. Doesn't matter how many times I watch it, I still enjoy it. Tarantino has a knack for getting something extra out of the actors in his movies and this one in particular is fantastic. Things like Star Wars and Pulp Fiction are pretty good tests to see if you're compatible with someone haha.

Ty Cobb would maybe the best movie, it has a good bits with driving a car in it flat out and it's all about greatness.
Deliverance.
The first, Mad Max was great.
Wolf creek 2005.
When you comin' back Red Rider in 1968. it's a story of a poorly done by Vietnam Vet that's only looked down and disrespected by stuck up ignorant people every where, who just happens to end up confronting some others pathetic elusions and exposing some others stupid pathetic fears, faults, desires and then gets hunted down and shot down in cold blood by a sick little fruit loop good for nothing low life grub, that becomes a hero in the eyes of deluded morons.

I'm a big fan of Ben Mendlesohn, anyhoo, a couple of his more recent ones really did tickle my fancy.. " Starred Up ", a U.K one, definitely not mainstream, well worth a look, also a Seppo one called "Mississippi Grind" ( with Ryan Reynolds ), just a bit out of the square, my two bobs worth !!

Aliens, saw it at the movies back in 86 and it totally blew me away. Probably a bit dated now but still good.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Very well acted by Johnny Depp and pretty funny to boot.

Django unchained and Pulp Fiction. 2 great Tarantino flicks.

The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.

Star Wars episode 4. Before George Lucas ****** up the whole franchise.

Others include 25th hour, American History X, Training day, Mad Max 2, Alien, Predator, Sleepers, Apollo 13 and Vanishing Point of course.

a lot of good movies, i will add;
the girl with the dragon tattoo, triogy , with numi rapace(sp) she is so cool.

i pick actors when getting movies.
anything with morgan freeman , al paccenio, daniel day lewis and a host of big hollywood stars.

into the wild (true story), whale rider.

magic movies, the prestige, the illusionist ( beautifully shot and acted)
comedy, the iron sky, talladega nights
sci-fi, prometheus, contact, intersteller, etc
action, american sniper, snatch, lone survivor , there will be blood (daniel day lewis)

im over the action hero (theme) movies, just not enough substance for me.

My top three:

1. The Imitation Game

Benedict Cumberbatch's acting talent seems to know no end. He was superb, totally inhabited the character of Alan Turing. It made me laugh, and it made me cry.

2. From Russia With Love

Ok, I may be a Bond fan, but that doesn't change the fact that I think this is not just the best Bond film ever made, it was one of the best films ever made. The book was better still, but this is one of the best spy thriller/espionage films, despite being 53 years old this year. Love it. Superb acting by Sean Connery, Pedro Armendariz and Lotte Lenya.

3. To Kill a Mockingbird

The rest:

A Bridge Too Far
Invictus
A Few Good Men
Shine
The Blind Side
Ratatouille
Star Trek: First Contact

I especially love the old Sci-fi movies:

1) The day the earth stood still (original)
2) Forbidden Planet - love Robbie the Robot
3) journey to the centre of the earth
4) Aliens
5) Alien v predator (the first one)
6) The Thing (original)
