I thought they went away from all fibreglass panels years ago? I think they have composite and carbon fibre panels now

You're right I'd rather be driving a plastic / metal BA falcon than a car that has a 50 year blood line, racing pedigee and its catch cry is the "heart beat of america"

I actually like most Yank muscle cars (i even used to own one). Give me a 71 Bull Nose Firebird or a 70 Challenger anyday of the week. I probably wouldn't even knock back an early Camaro or Chevelle but i wouldn't own a Corvette.

I owned a '76 Stingray for about 12 years and had a ball with it - great car and never gave me any dramas. Not real practical in the scheme of things but certainly no less so than any other two door two seater sports car.

The leaf spring you mentioned is a single transverse leaf on the rear that first appeared on the '63 and was carried through, it actually works very well and I guess that's why it was retained.

The fibreglass bodies are pretty painless as well - at least they don't rust!

Some of those cars that fell down the hole at Bowling Green were extremely rare or otherwise very significant vehicles, I can't believe that some on here almost seem to be celebrating what's occurred.

I can certainly accept that vettes are not everyone's cup of tea but I find some of the above comments to be quite disappointing.

Anyway - I sincerely hope that these cars can be recovered and repaired, so that they may be preserved for present and future enthusiasts from all over the world to enjoy.

I agree why the hate because it is a GM product? I find them a good looking car and brought one in 1994 when I was over there. I was looking for an early mustang but being the 30th anniversary they were way overpriced for a glorified early Falcon that were in decent condition. But found a 1982 Collector Corvette for $6,400 US dollars in Gilroy outside San Francisco in great condition only needed converting and drove the car back to LA docks along the Big Sur road taking the tops off to enjoy the sun. I sold the car and made a profit after owning it for several years. My FG 50th is a great car but it has lost money big time.

A lot of the bad experiences people have had driving these cars in Australia can be attributed to dodgy steering conversions. Back in the day there were no real rules and some of the conversions (my car included) were very average to say the least.

My vette had some horrible looking old RHD steering box that looked like it came out of a Blitz truck or something. God knows what it was but it was a leaky worn old thing that I wouldn't have put on a billy cart. The rest of it was a dog's breakfast of nondescript bits & pieces topped off with a leaky old power assist ram that had clearly seen better days. Bump steer and vague steering was the order of the day!

I ended up pulling the engine out and re-engineering the conversion with an XF power steering steering box (Kirby Bishop or Bendix Bishop if I recall correctly) and a combination of XY-XD Falcon steering components. I had an engineer modify the RH chassis rail and fit crush tubes etc and the XF box looked like it was meant to be there all along.

The car was transformed after that. I shouted it all new shocks and urethane bushes and it drove nice and tight from that point on.

Lots of fun and happy memories!

If I ever buy another one though, there is no way in the world I would convert it.

It's a shame to see that. If those Corvettes are just museum pieces, they should be able to salvage them and put them back onto display. It might give them an interesting story to tell about the cars in the future.

I’d like to think that these cars will be salvaged and hopefully returned to their former glory. Let’s face it, if they weren’t significant cars, they wouldn’t be in the museum.

Just for the record, I love Corvettes, in fact, I love just about all muscle cars regardless of the badge.

One of the many reasons I love them - they're simple yet effective.

Low running costs, low maintenance costs, fairly cheap to run, cheap to repair if something goes wrong. They do well in any form of motorsport they compete in. Wicked cars!

It'll be cool to see what the C7 Z06 is capable of.

What the heck is wrong with a Corvette! Id take one from just about every generation, the mustang is an awesome car but the Corvette is a level up IMO.

Agree with the above, a GT40 is the pick of them but its costs are not as low as the Corvette thats for sure.

Yep, I'm a "car person", not a "badge person". I love 'em all, but do acknowledge their faults, and every car has them.

One of my all time favourite Corvettes was seen in Gympie many years ago, when the conversion business there was called "Queensland Corvettes", and mainly concentrated on 'Vettes. It was slowly cruising Gympies main street, a black early seventies convertible with the top down, fitted with fat Chevrolet "Rally" steel wheels, small chrome "454" badges on the side, and it was a manual, with a black interior. The lucky sod driving it was almost straining his cheek muscles he was grinning that hard...the sound alone from the huge chrome side pipes was staggering. I'd give up certain bits of my anatomy...removed without anaesthetic using a rusty spoon...to have that thing in my driveway.

I would kill for a mid 60s Corvette Stingray hardtop! Drop dead sexy cars. I dig the late 50s / early 60s models and the late 60s / early 70s models too, but mid 60s is where it's at imo.

Where do I say they were bad or anything relating to that, all I clarified is that they are all fibreglass panelled. Go back and read what I said and then tell me I was slagging off the Vette in any way.
