Quick glance on wikipedia says Holden Shuttle is a rebadged Isuzu Fargo.....dopey looking thing that is haha
This thread has got me thinking about all the badge engineered cars we had selling alongside eachother: Falcon ute - Nissan ute Nissan Pulsar - Holden Astra Toyota Corolla - Holden Nova Toyota Camry - Holden Apollo Holden Commodore - Toyota Lexcen Nissan Patrol - Ford Maverick Nissan Pintara - Ford Corsair Suzuki Swift - Holden Barina Wont count 323/Laser and 626/Telstar because they were joint from the get go, but jeez what a shamozzle the late 80s/early 90s were.

A mate of mine bought one in 1988 (or maybe 87) only becasuse the warranty was longer than Ford were offering on the same car at the same price.

Was the late 80s Holden Vector (or was it Vectra?) a Nissan of some description? Also the Mazda van looked a lot like the Ford Econvan. Ford courier = Mazda bravo. |

i had a nissan ute for 7 years.
the badge on the grill was held on with 2 self tapper screws over top of the ford badge. a small "nissan ute" sticker on each front guard behind the wheel arch and a very large "NISSAN" sticker on the tail gate. the centre cap for the steering wheel had "nissan" instead of "ford", that was the only part that looked to be specially made. i think the grill badge and tail gate sticker were off the 720 ute. on the id plate it read "XFN nissan ute by ford motor company" . it used to confuse the heck out of the girls at the main roads and insurance offices as XFN nissan ute did not show up on a lot of there data bases so they would just put it down as a XF ford ute. i think that all the nissans came with LSD as standard while you had to pay extra for it in a ford and they had the better warrenty made them attractive to fleet buyers like councils etc but they were not big sellers in the private market. mine was originally a private owned car and was the equivelent to the falcon GLS ute with Tbar auto etc but was about $3000 cheaper then the ford equivelents in the same condition when i bought it in `96. .

The late 80's early 90's pulsar vector (sedan) was a nissan with a holden motor. The Holden Vectra was an Opel, Originally from Belgium then made here for a few years. Then back to being imported when the bigger new model Vectra came out. |

I think holden had a different set up with suzuki, as suzuki had no holden products in return to put suzuki badges on. This thread has got me stretching the brain cells though, without going through google to find more;) |

Imagine being a spare parts interpreter at holden dealerships,
Try and count the number of holden badged 4 cyl. passenger cars (sedans & hatches)through the 80s & 90s! |

Yeah, the Holden/Suzuki thing was a bit different (pre button plan I believe) but only mentioned it because they were still basically identical cars being sold at the same time. Laser/323 and Telstar/626 I always believed were developed as two variations of the same car, rather than the exact same car with a different badge. Those cars at least developed a bit of their own identities, always loved the tx5 turbos. Shame Ford didnt get to fiddle with the 1st gen mx6, in Tx5 guise I reckon it would of looked sweet. I wonder how many poor fools forked out on a Lexcen Newport thinking they were getting Toyota reliability. I cant remember where, but I do remember hearing somewhere that at Holden, when a commodore came down the assembly line with 'lexcen' badges, a bit less effort was made to put it together. Not sure how much truth there was to that.

However, the specially prepped bodies that formed the basis for the racing cars, were mainly hatch backs.

Very sensible buy back in the day...
From Ford, it had a one year, 20,000km warranty...buy the exact same ute from Nissan with Nissan badges, and you got the standard Nissan 2 year 40,000km warranty... Of course it did work the other way...a Nissan Patrol had a 2yr/40,000km warranty, but buy the exact same thing from Ford badged as a Maverick, and you only got Fords standard 1yr/20,000km warranty... A9X Toranas...records say that "Only 405 A9X Toranas were produced for sale to the public and these consisted of 305 four-door sedans and 100 two-door hatches." I remember a funny comment about A9X Toranas...they said that "of the 405 made, 10,000 were still on the road today..." |

Though, IIRC, they were only available as a body, not as a fully assembled car. The teams had to fit all the running gear etc into them, although a few made it onto the public road.

305 4 door A9X's and 100 hatches for sale to the public...you had to do that for homologation as a "production car". About 52 bodies were sold for racing cars to teams.
Same reason any of the supercars (Phase Falcons, Bathurst Monaros, E38/E49 Chargers, XU1 Toranas, A9X & L34 Toranas, etc) existed at all...the factory had to sell some to the public to be eligible to race them. They couldn't, as now, fit a special engine, box, and diff to a shell that was sort of like a car that the factory makes and race it, claiming it's a "Falcon" or "Commodore"... |

Sorry, I meant that I thought the A9X code was basically the 'bathurst special', so your homologation body/running gear. But I'll get back on topic now...
Ford Corsairs were poo, weren't they?

Fords answer? A quitely put together range of suspention improvements (evolution 2 or sum such name iirc) in the XC, that were utilised in the XC cobra, its self treated to some homologation trick ups, and a small run of stiffend shells im lead to believe.

I saw a nissan XF once...blew me away. Didn't know what to make of it. Also i picked up a datsun years ago for next to nothin'. Sold it to a silly young sod for a substantial profit after removing the dato badge on the boot to reveal the skyline one underneath.

That's why it's so difficult to make a good enough fake one to pass a close inspection...by the time you've gone to the expense of hacking in the rear floor pan from a UC to fit to the A9X fake you're making, and fit up the suspension with a disc brake rear end, and do it in a way to pass expert inspection, it just isn't worth it.

This stuff still goes on today, Fiat sells the Suzuki SX4 thinggo in Italy: Then you can delve deeper into cars that are 'based' on other cars, but look a tad different like the Ssanqwertyxyoung Chairman / Musso that was based on old Merc technology or the Holden Cruze (the old one) that was based on a Suzuki Ignis from memory.
