US loss to cost Holden $1bn a year

All Ford has to do is weather the storm.The more opposition car manufacturers fall over the better. Things will turnaround eventually and when they do i beleive Ford will benefit significantly.Quite obviously they will also have to learn from their past mistakes.
Don't worry about parts suppliers , there are plenty in China ,whether they are good enough quality wise is another question but they will be there to fill the void.
I worked at the South Pacific Tyres manufacturing plant in Somerton and we supplied most of the OE tyres to Ford. We closed down and now Ford are getting their tyres from China albeit from the same company.ie Goodyear owned SPT now the tyres are coming from Goodyear China.

The chances for Holden to just go away are about zero, chance of the VE doing the same anytime soon are also zero. It's just a matter of who owns it. Watch out if it actually becomes Australian owned

How much would Holden cost to buy? - Along with a deal to still be able to buy engines from GM discounted (why wouldn't GM want to continue selling V8s to Holden if the sell GMH off? - its easy money)..

I only see two parties buying GMH; the Chinese, or the Australian Government.

I don't think the government would buy Holden.

The government may help with a buyout, or give financial support to Holden until a likely suitor is found, but I doubt very much that the government would 'buy' Holden.

And having an Australian buyer for Holden so that it is Aussie owned is all well and good in theory, however the reason why Holden has been so successful with exports and the VE in recent years is because of the multi-billion dollar financial support and backing of General Motors. Would an Australian corporation be able to provide the same level of financial support for product development as GM? Doubt it.

I see GMH have a Commodore in L.A as a test police car to replace the old Ford Crown Victoria.. If does pass it goes to all states including Canada...
Not too sure how the locals would like a foreign car as public vehicle though given the finance issues they are having !!

It's been proven in the last 30 years that the trend is towards fuel efficient cars.

Yes there are blips in the last10 years of cheap petrol, but the price always eventually rises.....and GM and ford have ignored the warning signs.

Commodores/Pontiacs are not efficient on fuel....quite the opposite.

Even when GMH made a 4 cylinder Commodore in the 1980's it used as much fuel as a 6 cyl.

GMH have read the market wrong, apart from a few forum enthusiasts and company fleet buyers...Commodores are thirsty chariots compared to the Jap and european offerings.

Goodbye and good riddance I say.....
