nice!!... what ya doing for a radiator?.....biggest flaw with putting anything decent in a kombi is that you have to chop the front up to fit a radiator.
also, more pics!! |

It's going to be a daily driver again, so it's gotta be practical in all applications and despite what every one with a VW water cooled conversion tells you, you can't beat out the front. Kombi On |

That's awesome ... Nice neat fit with the radiator as well with the bar.
Doesn't look too out of place either.

Thanks mate...I appreciate that, that radiator set up was a decision which took a fair while to make. I didn't want to detract from the original look of the bus too much, but wanted it to be practical too.

It is getting stainless mesh over the fron of the radiator and some more structural support. So if I hit one it should be cheese grated or skinned on it's way down, tenderised on it's way underneath and ready to cook on a spit by the time it gets spat out the back.
Oh yeah it's a sleeper alright...she fits 4 comfortably...lol The engine will be started for the first time in the car tonight...last time I fired it up was after the rebuild and it was just sitting on the stand!! Fire in the hole..

Heres a bit more progress, plumbing is complete and the radiator is mounted with a the thermo fan in place. We have also cut the engine inspection hole out to all ow more access...time to build the new cover.

I LOVE the faded sleeper look Maybe you could even spray the radiator a similar shade of ORANGE? and put the VW emblem on it. That would camoflage most of ithe radiator and look even COOLER i RECKON sTEVE ps i USED TO HAVE a new cARAVELLE gL AND DID OVER 400,000KS IN IT IN 4 YEARS in the 80's. Mullers looked after it and all good except forgot to change coolant and it caused problems. Man, we used to surprise a lot of people on the open road with that thing full with a load of stock and Dire Straits full bore on the stereo. 160+ kilometres per hour for hours with a tonne on board was a regular cruise in the bush out Forbes way Big make that HUGE sunroof open as well as the stereo full bore. Nice memories. |

Now I am missing her even more...
That sleeper look you're talking about is gonna go. I reckon she has had her original paintwork for long enough and after what we have done to her I don't want to give the engineer any excuses. She is getting baked original orange with a white roof & bumpers. The gutter channel, wheels and bull bars are going argent silver. We started it last Thursday night. I knew that cam was lumpy but geez, she sure does rock!!! Kombi On, Dave

Interesting...that won't be the case here. I bet the V8 towed and climbed hills a lot better and if it didn't, it had issues.

my brothers old boss was a kombi/VW nut and had a heap of them.. and about 6 of the rare engines.. his name is clayton.. owned DJ Mechanical in morayfield qld
they used to mount the radiator horizontally underneath the kombi with a stainless bash plate and scoop underneath to A) push air thru it and B) protect it from being smashed by rubbish on the road he had a WRX motor in it .. but was sick of changing front suspension bits(kept breaking them due to wheel stands) so took the turbo off and ran it NA.. says it still lifted the wheels no worries tho..

The engineer has been involved from the start of the build and he hasn't said that.

I agree...my other Kombi was a played with 2.0l with twin carbs. It went well too, just not with massive off road wheels towing a trailer with motorbikes on it, 4+ stinky blokes and all the gear we need for a few days.
The only fear I had with the radiator underneath was crushing it when I'm off road. The Leyland V8 also weighs less than the Volksy 4, which suprised me a little.
