I took the Territory for a roadworthy inspection early this morning, and had 30 minutes to kill before it would be done, so went for a coffee in the shopping centre, which was nearly deserted.

There were 2 Chinese SUVs on display in the centre ( won't name the brand, in case I get sued ) and I noticed a drip tray under one of them, with what looked like a shiny patch in it.
Hands and knees inspection showed me what looked like a puddle of fresh engine oil. From a leak ? Surely not ? It is a new car ? Meticulously prepared for public inspection ?
Wonder if the new models are better than the ones from 10 years ago, before the brand exited Australia leaving the owners with no dealers or back-up or parts ?

That was certainly a big factor.In fact on one of the UK Ford forums one guy actually said he still would not buy a Japanese car because of the ‘war’ & the way they treated prisoners.I came back & said well you are happy to buy a German car,& they did some terrible things to prisoners in the War.In other words move on.As a result I got hammered over that.

Ha ha, would love to hear the excuse for that on the Chinese-Car-Enthusiast Facebook page. Let me guess, it's intentional so that the underside of car is protected from rust?

I too struggled with, and swore at what I thought were those 'cheese headed Phillips head' screws in the Japanese Bikes back in the 70's and 80's Mick.

A bit of age with it's accompanying experience and wisdom has since taught me that it wasn't Honda's fault at all. It was simply the case of we young blokes trying to use a Phillips screwdriver on a non-Phillips fastener. Japanese bikes used JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) machine screws. They look like Phillips but they're not. Use a JIS screwdriver and the difference is night and day! You will never strip the head of a JIS screw if you use a JIS screwdriver.

I'm still very much into motorcycles generally and have a SOHC CB750 parked in the living room just a few metres from where I'm typing this!

I believe that the Germans treatment was far better than that of the Japs tho in WW2 as their was standards set.
What them who were in the Jap camps objected to was the glee that was taken by such in how they dealt with them, i could inform you of such details but nowadays one is not allowed to point out such truths of what was done.

Agree. My father's oldest brother was imprisoned by the Japs, working on the Burma railway, horrible stories my father told about his time there (he never spoke of it) And of course, at the time the Germans invading Australia were less of a threat.
Remember Japan did bomb Darwin.

I’m wondering that with more MGs being sold each month, there’s going to be plenty filtering onto the used
market over the next five years and depending on price, that could be a cheap way to enter the BEV scene.

My BIL owned one. He thrashed it and it never died. The paint faded on it and everything. 5 speed manual and all. He would've kept it if he didn't crash it into a tree.

AFAIK Mitsubishi didn't build the engines, they were built under licence in South Korea. I don't care who designed them , but they weren't exactly 'good looking' cars.

They were simple & durable but not the pinnacle of quality.

sorry to burst your bubble, in the aftermarket where I get my first hand intel the X1 was a POS for starters.
Valve stems seals/rocker cover gaskets a plenty plus the front suspension was too soft couldn't cope and was junk.
Korean Engineers came over here road testing and get the thing in better order for X2 on.
Aftermarket made a motza selling Excel parts.
Sure some lasted but most things mitsu back those days and pre didn't have a great rep at all.

As for the MG, figuritively speaking the first model was/is the modern day X1.
When your experiecing auto box failures so early in its life is woeful going to market in todays world.
I'm sure they have resolved alot since gen1.

Yes but they were from 40 years ago! When we perfected the 4 speed auto in Albury in 1990 there's no excuse for such failure prone 4 speed torque converter autos in this day and age.

After 30 years, minimal (if any) fluid changes and being flogged. Not 1-2 years on the road! The only way to grenade a BTR that new would be to put DexronIII in it.

That is the key statement - 'we' who were a mature auto industry with many decades of design and manufacturing experience.

MG on the other hand are still learning even if the the technology they use is decades old.

That is true, that said I wouldn't want to be spending my own hard earned money on a vehicle from a manufacturer that as you put it are "still learning". Heck I'm not even convinced the Koreans are there yet. Not to mention the shady government dealings, not a fan of the CCP at all.
