Imagine if 1950 of the 2000 “protesters” simply walked away when things started to go pear shaped? Now that would have been interesting.

If they had any guts, they would have had their little protest at 11 AM, not PM. That would have been more interesting to watch.

Ok, I'm done trying to explain my stance on this.

I did not attend, because I know there is dullards out there that when their adrenaline is high and most likely full of plonk that they will act like morons. I actually wish I was there and could have filmed what happened from start to finish as it may well have been useful. So be it.

That said, I do not think that trying to get a voice heard by planning a protest in a location where there would be support is something that should be discouraged, although it is clear in this situation that they should have thought longer and harder about what could have happened.

I'm absolutely sick to death of people in modified cars being victimised because of a few bad eggs, yet, that very people most likely to be disadvantaged by the bad eggs are the people perpetuating the image that the bad eggs are the only element of what we consider a legitimate hobby. IMO the first thing we should have been saying is these few that caused trouble ruined what should have been a peaceful protest yet everywhere I read there are people so blinded in their comments that the general public can't help but think we're just covering our *****.

So go for it, rant on. But just so me one favour and think about how the hell we as car enthusiasts are supposed to get ourselves out of the massive hole that has been dug for us not just by this, but everything that has happened prior. I'll guarantee you silent protests and finger pointing won't help us in 10 years time.

Out of this thread, goodnight.

So yes ok, you sorta admit it was a bad idea, but then you say you want to be there to film it? To help Police? or....

No one is discouraging a LEGITIMATE protest.... I dont see one post on here who has.
This "protest" wasnt legitimate. So stop calling it one...

I wouldnt say its a small minorty. Overall from young drivers to old drivers, you can say its a minority of people who "hoon". However when you look at the age group involved, from 18 to 28yr old males... its a large group of that age bracket who are the problem. And it gets worse every day...

Couple this to the fact that the MAJORITY of this male age bracket now own expensive cars, not just V8 Commodores, but expensive Japenese cars with neon lights etc...They stand out like a sore thumb, while the rest of us older folk mind our own business.

There-in also lays a problem. The public only sees "young" hoons on the road and really have no idea about legitimate car clubs or car enthusists. The media constantly reports about how young hoons etc etc terrorise the street at night and rightly so.
So the public at large don't really know the bigger picture.

Quote:

Again, the "protest" was not legitimate, let alone thought out as you said. 11.30PM is NOT a time to protest. Hell yea im covering my ***!!!! I dont want to be tarred with the same brush as these idiots.

The hole is deep and will take years to fix. No one has said anything about silent protests here. In fact a well organised protest wouldve brought things to the attension of the public without causing alarm or distrust. However NO ONE organised one. Instead a bunch of moron street racers decided to meet at 11.30PM as per usual, like they always do.

i was talking to the cops about making a drag strip for us and they said the gov dosnt even look at doing it cause it is deemed very unsafe and if you realy want to do it go to calder or get a cams licence there pulling this whole oh your not getting it now cause they want everyone to think they were going to go ahead with the idea.

hell i should slap a sticker on my car saying im a hoon and be proud of it cause thats all us young guys get these days is being called inmature hoons cause of the small lot that wreak it for the rest and no matter how much we try to prove that we are the same as others we get shot down and ignored by the older guys.

The level of intellegence displayed at the riot correlates to that shown by the average attendee of Summernats/Easternats/insert excuse for pi$$ up and show us ya tits festival.

I agree entirely - burnouts and driving like a kn0b is not motorsport and never will be. Bunch of bogans.

I have to agree with most here ....wether or not it started as a peacefull protest with all good intentions ... why at 11:30Pm ????? this could have been staged suring the day and acheived just as much....Reality is, that there was every likelehood that trouble would start and the organisers would get more coverage , rather than a peacfull Day time protest march...was silly and ill thought out "Protest"...

Its a simple question...
Im pretty sure i said it in my other post but Friday nights is the night the young generation of car enthusiasts go out to cruise....And honestly the majority do actually cruise. I don't think i have seen many burnouts i admit i have seen some drags but thats always gonna happen and im out every Friday night for at least the last year. Thats the only reason i can think of as to why it was at night.... But it do agree it was asking for trouble, It should have been during the day.

What is the possible outcome given the time of night?
The chances that "drunken" yobs will be out in force?
What did they hope to achieve but showing up at 11.30PM?
The only you do by showing up at that hour is say im a street racer, this is the normal hour I attend street racing, all my street racing buddies will be there.....
WHY?... Because thats when we go out to cruise.
Possible outcome? Could have been many it just turned out to be the worse one.
Drunken yob's? Of course there is going to be them i blame that for the whole thing.
What did they hope to achieve but showing up at 11.30PM? Same as if we all showed up at 11.30AM to show there is a need for more motorsport events and that we were upset about the cancellation of the nats.

And the street racer comment....well thats just ignorant. If someone on AFF thinks that its no wonder the media has the same opinion of people who cruise on friday nights.

If the government actually wanted us to get off the street and goto tracks they would put the money they made a couple weeks ago at Campbellfeild towards paying Bob Jane to use his track.

this is from a regular easternat entrant on another forum,

Apparently it was supposed to be a protest at Calder Park, cops got wind of it and sent the organiser an email detailing consequences if they proceeded. So by the power of facebook it was relocated, facebook is also an evil in all of this, half of the people that turned up probably had no interest in cars what so ever and just wanted to cause trouble and riot, they see there's an angry gathering happening and turn up. I would hope the organiser had nothing to do with the rioting and was originally intending a peacful protest. So yeah, once again thanks to the effing ************** who wreck it for everyone.

Any protest staged at that time of night is bringing a negative light on itself.

To stage this "protest" after dark was bloody silly. Remember you were trying to show the good "normal" people of the world that Easternats is a properly run and organized event that should have gone ahead.

All that doing it at that time made people think was that it's just an underground bunch of yobs trying to do burnouts, race and make noise.

No matter the intention, that is peoples perception.

Because that when YOU cruise..... there you go. Just answered my question.
The so called "protest" was aimed at encouraging just ONE particular group.

And this particular group is ALREADY SEEN AS ANTI SOCIAL HOONS.... Had any form of intelligence been shown, it would've been organised legally and in daylight hours....

This is the same group of people who rioted some 4 yrs ago just weeks before Easternats? Street racers right? Same mind set.... and you cant even see it.

It wasn't encouraging ONE particular group anyone could have went.

I know for a fact that there was even EASTERNATS officials there. Not saying that they endorsed any of this but i know of people who are track officials for Easternats who were there. And i also know that them people dont cruise on friday nights.

Maby if a few of the REAL enthusiast from here turned up the ratio of idiots to enthusiast would have been better and this wouldn't have happened.

Try and justify it anyway you choose.

Won't change a thing.

OK to summise 12 pages it seems the majority are in agreement that what happened was deplorable and it has set back motoring enthusiasts a year or more, people dont protest at 1130 at night and if you do then it isn't a protest its a planned something else. Calder park management sought greater control over the Easternats event and as such it pushed Davison into a corner and he caved as he had no venue. I think that about sums up 12 pages as efficiently as possible hitting all the key points. (I hope)

NOW the question needs to be asked what do motoring enthusiasts do to get things back on track, get public acceptance back and distance ourselves from these thugs? Quite frankly I cannot see a way to save public face after this incident, and I have been personally on the receiving end of agro as a direct result as its well known in the community in which I live that my father and me are repeat attendees as entrants to the Easternats (4 years or so) and I have been forced to defend myself in verbal slanging matches.

Anyone actually associated with drag racing may face stiff penalties for being there.

You could have had everyone from FF's at attendance there and the nongs with their baseball bats and thongs still would have broken windows and overturned the ute.

You're suggesting that there are people in your community that are abusive to you because you attend a car show? Seriously?

yes, too right its happening; since the events of the other night my intelligence is being questioned at work because i am a car enthusiast. behind my back i am probably being labelled a hoon. people are refusing to take into consideration the fact that i didn't even attend this event, let alone condone any actions like it. i am totally gobsmacked at the disdain suddenly shown to me... :
