MG are the Hyundai Excel when first into the market way back in the day imo.
Market demands.
Maybe the product will improve in time but they are price levelled where consumers buy on price and 7yr wty's........
They are a "flip car" to me before WTY expires.

Landing in Melb for last year's AGP, sixt handed me a new MG ZS or whatever the model it is with just 800k's.
By the time I made it to the CBD I was smelling burning tranny oil.
I stopped in town to get some food getting back in to re start it struggled and all the dash lights we're going off, got it going, thought f it I'm getting to my hotel 10mins away, very slowly it wouldn't accelerate much but crawled to carpark.
Locked it up got on the phone to sixt reported the new car is cooked, rthey asked can I drive it back to the airport to pick up a replacemen lol.....
Arrange a flat top its going no where trust me haha.....

Like one said earlier, get what you pay for.

Chinese Car Quality Ranked

https://www.carexpert.com.au/car-new...tesla-mg-place

MG sit at 43rd on that list, Tesla at 19th and Havel at 31st.

Yesterday I finished my three week "adventure". While my car was being repaired I was given a MG ZS! And in conclusion, not as bad as I thought but still mediocre.

Gutless engine which is noisy. And fuel economy of the 1.5 liter equivalent to my parents 2007 Ford Focus with a 2.0 liter engine.

4 speed auto which operates almost the same in normal and sports mode

ABS kicks in way too eagerly. I don't know if the brakes or the tyres are at fault.

Terrible suspension when hitting sharp speed humps and handling not confidence inspiring

Huge blind spots due to tiny windows between rear doors back of car

Lights default setting is AUTO and not off so always turning on lights

Stereo has no off button so it starts every time vehicle is started. Need to use mute button. And AM reception very poor except for the stations with the strongest signals.

Indicator column on left side of steering wheel next to cruise control column which meant I often accidentally high beamed drivers when I was trying to use the cruise control

Apple car play - enough said

Trip computer seems to reset every time car is started

Odd quirk is hazard lights would automatically start flashing if applied the brakes too hard.

Worst sounding horn I've heard to date

In conclusion for that money I'd rater buy a used Japanese or South Korean SUV which would be superior vehicles.

That's a good thing, IMO. Too many drivers "forget" to turn their headlights on. There should only be two positions on the headlight switch: AUTO and ON.

Not unique to MG, many modern cars do that to warn drivers behind of hazard if emergency braking.

4 speed auto was introduced in 1989. And that was pretty late in global terms, with most of them from other manufacturers introduced earlier that decade. It's pretty staggering that any manufacturer is still using them 4 decades later.

I don't disagree with your point of view that it's surprising that any manufacturer, especially at the global level, still uses a 4 speed auto. However, I think you are deliberately choosing specifics and applying caveats to make the situation seem worse than what it actually is, simply to discredit the Chinese manufacturers that you have an issue with. if you want to look at it another way, the last all new Falcon model to be introduced that came with a 4 speed auto from factory was the FG in 2008.

Nowhere near as bad as 1989 makes it sound.

It is tricky. You can only select manually 4 speeds. In full auto mode it is a 5 speed. At least the one I rented in Tassie was like this.

I am aware of that. Doesn't change the fact that it looks like you're trying to cherry pick data to promote your view.

Anyway, we've both made our point, we're probably not going to convince each other of our opposing views, and it's not adding anything to the thread, so I'm happy to agree to disagree and move on.

I disagree. LED technology has advanced a lot so that many drivers at night time think the always on LEDs are their main driving lights and don't bother to turn on the main headlights. I see more cars driving at night without headlights these days when compared to a couple of decades ago when almost nobody have LED lights.

If ever there was a reason to not tick the hire car option on an insurance policy, it would surely be so that one doesn't get saddled with a Chinese made MG!

So, are they claiming torque converter lockup in 4th as an additional "gear"?

My Skoda got rear ended by a Raptor last year
In the interim I got a Europcar rental paid by insurer
Insurer / Europcar allocated me a Mg3
On the day of pickup of rental I begged Europcar not a mg please
They gave a Puma St!

I think what you and nx75305 are saying is the same? I read your original post as saying you didn't like that the lights automatically initiated in the auto position, meaning a driver would not need to do anything to have the main headlights come on when low light conditions were detected. I also read it as though you wanted to have the headlights on in bright light conditions, so had to turn the headlights on manually. Is that not what you meant?

Puma ST-Line, not a Puma ST ( which isn’t sold here ).

I can't believe they don't even offer the Puma ST here, especially after discontinuing both the Fiesta and Focus ST.

At least have SOMETHING.

The whole 'Ford Performance' range consists of a Thailand Special and the Mustang.

It’s depressing, Ford Performance DNA includes Hot Hatches and brilliant handling small cars, and this goes back to the 1960’s.

It has now been put in the bin.

The thing is there is no small car option for Ford going forward, the BEV Puma will probably be 60g too,

Being manual only probably. Manual SUV's are hens teeth. They still should have brought it here. If they can sell 30-40 Focus and Fiesta ST's a month here then that shouldn't be too hard to achieve with the Puma ST. It would be more profitable than both of them considering they charge more for them.

Just read an article in Wheels that talked about the dying off of performance cars, and it's EV's and the coming Euro 7 emissions that are to blame. An industry insider from a manufacturer reckons they are dedicating so much time and money bringing EV's to market, that performance cars have become nothing but a distraction. He says they used to look at them as halo vehicles, but now they can use EV's to do that job, so they don't have the time, money or reasoning to bother with them anymore.

It's a sad time. More and more of them are disappearing from the market. And an EV "performance car" just isn't the same as a good ICE one. The motoring world is looking very bleak.

They've had a price rise, they're just under $20K DA these days.

When the Kia Rio is discontinued I reckon they'll be something like $27,990 DA as they have no competition.

For what you get they're still junk, I paid $18K DA for my povvo pack WS Fiesta in 2009 which is more powerful and had an extra gear, back then.

The whole segment has stagnated, its made no progress in 15 years.

I remember talking to someone on the street that had a yellow coloured car. Can’t remember what brand but it was a small car. I said “bright colour? You like that colour?”. She said, “No it was $200 cheaper than a white one.”

You may be surprised just how many people don't care what colour/brand/engine their next cars is, just so long as it's gets them from A to B and is cheap.

Knew a bloke years ago who bought a used ZL Fairlane painted bright pink and owned by one of the cosmetic companies. He said considering he got it for about half the price of a regular colour it was a bargain. As he said “I cant really see the colour when I,m driving”
