What an embarrassment. I cringed throughout the show and if it wasn’t for the Aussie car content I would not have watched. Why do the presenters think that acting like a complete Yobbo is the Australian way? What I really disliked most was the way they mistreated the cars. Whether you like the cars they are testing or not, that is not the way to treat an automobile. Guys, please show some respect for the cars! If the next episode is more of the first, I wont turn on again. There are some excellent auto shows already on TV and they leave this Pommy copy for dead. SBS paid something like $11 million for the rights to make this show and if it doesn’t improve I would be surprised if it survives one series. Watch Gasolene, Rodders Life, Cruisin and even Classic Restos to see how Aussies really enjoy their cars. My two bobs worth.

Im guessing you havent watched the pommie version? These guys treated the cars like Gold compared to Clarkson and the crew.

I second that, my wife loves the UK show as much as I, but neither of us were impressed by the Aussie version, and to have such BASIC flaws as very poor in car camera quality (looks like webcam), and out of focus shots on the race track (such as it was) didn't impress. Sure it was a first episode, but they were NOT starting from scratch, so I didn't expect something worse than UK Top Gear were doing 10 years ago.

I thought the cinematography (for want of a better word) was one of its strong points. They need to work on the angles of the track, or work on the track as it looks very inadequate.

I don't buy the argument that early seasons of TG were crap (at least in its current iteration - didn't see any episodes prior to the current series 1 of TG). The first season with the used car guy was tiresome on his segment, however, the rest of the show still kept me thoroughly entertained. TGA had the benefit of years of experience from TG, it just needs some tweaking and the presenters to settle into their own personalities. You can't out TG, TG. I don't care if they keep a similar format, keep the exact same studio or do the odd goofy challenge - my biggest gripe is that I watched ~45 minutes of car show and I have no idea what they thought of any of the cars they drove.

e.g. If TG did the softroader challenge, you'd get a nice summation with to and fro arguing about its positives and negatives of each vehicle the guys drove while they pay out on each others own shortcomings. Granted, TGA presenters probably can't pull that off with the same level of entertainment - but still give me your conclusions!

I thouroughly agree with that, they basically said nothing about the cars at all. How can you call yourself a car show, do a comparison and hardly even talk about the cars and make no conclusion at the end. That was just ridiculous.

Well I have to disagree about the cinematography, on HD it pretty much all looked crap, partly out of focus and the in car shots were just plain fuzzy as hell, if you watched it on a 2 in screen it might look ok.

I do agree with RodP about the car reviews, they almost slid the Forester off a mountain but then there was no conclusion other than the car with by far the most power was faster. The one who looks like "Dicko" REALLY irritates me too.

Its really too difficult to look at this show without comparing it to the original. For a first run ep I think they did ok. I'll be at one of the tapings next wednesday so it will be interesting to see how they all act after a few other tapings under their belts.

HD on SBS??? 576P is to HD what TRD Aurion is to performance motoring.

Very few here have realised that it is SBS doing this show.

The budget will be $3.95 + gst.
The director will be an Icelandic exchange student with an interpreter from Svalbard passing his instructions to the "talent".
The continuity and cinematography is inconsistant because they have to borrow for "evaluation " a different camcorder each day from Harvey Norman.
The pink hair guy was there to allow them to gamma correct for the studio lighting on the fly as they could only have it while the cleaners were in.
The test vehicles were the only ones they could get in return for tickets to the Soccer or an intro to the hot brazillian chick who does the news sometimes.

I suspect that SBS only came into existence to allow hopeless people who were not raving queens or radiical numpties to have a place to work.
The hopeless people who are raving queens or radical numpties work for the ABC.

On the other hand if there was not SBS then there would be soccer on all the "real" channels so I suppose it does serve at least one useful purpose.

Its quite sad that 576P is considered HD isn't it? It should be AT LEAST 720P.

Nothing wrong with the show being the same set UK Top Gear, after its a winning formula. However that said, why have the cast try to mimik Clarkson, Hammond and May, let them be their own personalities, the only way it will work.

Also if this is a Australian Version of Top Gear, why is the main presenter, Charlie Cox, a english man. Surely if we want a aussie version ,why not have a Aussie presenter?

Great theories there flappist, however even on SD digital it looked pitiful in comparison to the UK version, and I was comparing it to a rather OLD UK version about 4 years old. I will watch it tonight, but that may well be the last time.

I'll wait and see how it is because its not every week that top gear UK was great. Plus I want to see aussie cars and like the times of say the F6 Typhoon compared to cars like the ferrari and lambo.
Although I think the Ford vs Holden is complete crap why not compare v8's instead of the 6 against the v8.

I'm going to be the laughing stock of the school tonight if Ford loses, It seems to be that I'm the ONLY Ford supporter out there in the school, all my mates are all Holden supporters and I'm not going to live this one down if we lose. Worst thing of all is that i told all my friends who are Holden supporters to watch it..

Well I reckon this is really important. The people that will be watching this episode form all over the world know about the HSV product through the VX8 that has made a few UK Top gear showings.

If FPV were to knock off this car it will put FPV on the map on a global scale.

People in the UK down loading this episode are in for a treat I reckon.

If the F6 doesn't eat the R8/GTS i'd be blown away, should be faster everywhere, so if they sit on the fence i'll be disapointed.
