We don't have subs just as a tool to deter/fight other subs in the region, subs play a pivotal role in surface warfare, surveillance, intelligence etc..
They are a part of the bigger defence package.

Those questioning the current state of the world and the perceived very low risk of war at home need to remember, a defence force can't just be turned off and on at will, to have a effective defence force means keeping them skilled and doing their jobs during peacetime (and providing a deterrent to others).

Does "won't be built by Australian company" mean won't be built in Australia, or won't be built by ASC?

Got to keep the gash somewhere or the greenies will have a sook.

You obviously missed the table, chairs and umbrella between the masts.

I think most collins class knockers believe this is a picture of a submarine...their thought process foes something like this...of course its a bad design, the entertainment area is outside and I bet they have fly screen doors on an Australian designed submarine.

Here is an excerpt from the published letter by a former Collins Class commander.

Perhaps our strongest supporter is the highly acclaimed United States submarine service and that should say it all. The Americans also visited us many times during our build program and have adopted concepts such as modular design and build, performance contracts, and combat system concepts in their own submarine programs. They are great admirers of what we have achieved and are mystified by the paucity of the political debate and lack of support for such an important element of our Defence Force, though they would not be so impolite to say so.

What bloody hope have we got? Complete incompetance from Department of Defence and DMO. If you can get your head around it, these two clowns are " heads of department". Whos advice are they relying on? Incredible!!!!

What, so the main argument against building them in Japan from this article is because their English is not too good?

What incompetence are you referring to? Nothing has been decided yet, this guy is an ex-Chief of Navy.

I hope whomever signs off on the final contract take more into consideration than just "jobs for my state"... Maintaining jobs in our own country is VERY important, so is having the BEST defence assets available for our available budget.

My old man's ashes would be turning in their urn at the idea of the Japs building OUR warships (subs) AND on OUR soil!!
For christsake, what is wrong with the frigging bozos supposedly running this bloody country??
Gee, how'd I'd love to be able to wind back the clock to 1944 and ask our brave lads fighting in Darwin, PNG, or Burma or starving in Changi what they reckon of the idea?
Fairdinkum, Australia has totally lost the plot!
And WE (me included) just continue to allow mindless decisions to be made by mindless imbeciles without a whimper... furthering our slide down the gurgler!
