Default Jeep... get ya doors off

Summers here and I'm spending a fair bit of time cruising my cars up and down the northern beaches...
One thing I'm noticing is the amount of Jeeps doing the same but minus their doors. Fair enough, people enjoying their cars with the breeze blowing "kind of nice" up the leg of your shorts.
They've got the marketing right, people are getting around with nets and little cut down doors but one that struck me this morn was a guy in a Wrangler with all four doors off and the wiring looms still hanging out of the pillars. Now am I missing something? surely your prompting a defect sticker? how about the after market netting? could you just plead its a Jeep thing? Pretty sure if I ripped the doors off of the old Escort I'd be in a whole world of trouble...

Common sense would say it's probably not the best to remove any safety features, and I assume the doors probably have side impact bars in them.

The old Transit vans were good for that too - driving along with the sliding driver's door open (legally). Not sure how safe or legal the current model jeeps are in that respect though.

The looms are probably just power windows & central locking, so there wouldn't be too many issues having them unplugged. Are the rear view mirrors mounted on the doors? If so, that would be the easiest defect to apply.

I believe the wrangler doors offer no safety protection. In mine there is a warning sticker stating this even, along with the warning of high roll over risk. . The user manual even has a removal procedure for driving doorless. The doors are thin and I'm sure have no intrusion bars, i believe the roll cage inside the wrangler is how it gets around the doors.

Doubt it's legal most places in Australia though.

I wouldn't have thought it would be legal anywhere.
I tried to find the rulings on side door intrusion on the Commonwealth ADR site but if anyone can decipher the gibberish therein, they're doing well. One thing I did discover is there's a different ruling between 4WD and passenger cars.

Slightly off topic, but I was looking at a mini Moke parked along side a lifted 4WD and thought... what chance would you have to survive a crash from any angle in a Moke.

Wouldn't wanna have an accident in one, but I'd love to own one. Exorbitantly over priced these days.

Especially when you realise the large box sills on the mokes are the fuel tanks

Still cool though

They didn't even have doors

The old Mokes, used to be the greatest form of transport around Broome in the 80's.

A mate used to own one and lived next door to a pub. At 3am the discharged punters used it as a dunny and rubbish bin. Poor bugger!

When I had my Jeep I was on a Jeep forum.
This discussion would come up every time a member got a defect notice off the police.
As far as I could work it out it was all legal, but some cops just couldn't get their heads around that.

As long as the Jeep has its door mounted side view mirrors relocated to the A pillar, then it should be OK.
