DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Here's a new one: The pace car caught fire during a NASCAR race on Saturday night.
Just before the final segment of the season-opening Sprint Unlimited exhibition race, pace car driver Brett Bodine pulled his blue Chevrolet SS pace car down to the apron when he had smoke inside the vehicle. "Tower, we're on fire," Bodine radioed. As soon as he stopped and got out of the car, flames erupted from the rear of the vehicle. They were quickly extinguished by safety crews. A replacement pace car was brought out to finish the race. The fire took place at the same track -- Daytona International Speedway -- where a jet dryer exploded in a fireball after Juan Pablo Montoya's race car hit it in the 2012 Daytona 500. It's been a tough week for GM. Earlier this week, the car manufacturer had to recall 778,562 of its 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt and 2007 Pontiac G5 compacts in North America after faulty ignition switches were linked to six deaths. And a sinkhole swallowed eight cars at the National Corvette Museum. Denny Hamlin won the race after taking the lead on the final lap and finishing uncontested. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports...mited/5523123/

At a guess I would say it's most likely a wiring issue with the lighting when it was modified to be a pace car.

One of the drivers and a crew chief say wiring for the strobe lights caused it.
This page, however says the fire is under investigation. http://espn.go.com/racing/nascar/sto...imited-daytona |

We should be proud that an Aussie developed and built car is being used as the pace car at the world's most popular tin top category - NASCAR. The fire seems to have been caused by after market mods, not anything that Holden did. I'm ashamed that this thread, or the mentality behind it, exists on an Australian forum.....

We are on a Ford Forum and most realize it obviously had nothing to do with the GM product.........Yes , we are on an Australian Forum where Australians used to be able to have a laugh at our own expense.............

No one loves Aussie built more than I. This joint gets far to serious to be classed as Aussie most of the time anyhow. If it was a Falcon I would have put it up too. I have not read further yet, what wiring it was, any wiring job catching fire in a car built to be on a race track is probably bad! Lol.

The Holden marketing department could still put a positive on it " Chev lights up the track at Daytona" ................ That mob could polish a **** and make it look good.............

" Throw another Chev badge on the barbie "
To be fair I think someone didn't wire it up right whilst modifying it to be a pace car.

edit: sorry, that was uncalled for... what they would actually have said if it were a Falcon, the fire would have been 'within tolerance' Last edited by b0son; 16-02-2014 at 10:47 PM. |

One of the guys at work was responsible for totalling a $200,000 ambo with a fire because of the way one single wire was routed through the engine bay.
Its easy to do, believe me. |

I remember the first time I put a set of "fry a roo at 500 meters" spotlights on my first Landcruiser, I stood there in frozen horror when I first turned them on in the shed and watched the insulation on the wiring melt before my eyes.....I learnt a lot that day....

I remember speaking to someone with a Kia Carnival who had electrical problems with it from new, went back and forth to the dealer with no resolution.
Eventually they discovered that the wiring had been damaged in various locations, and was probably done by rats chewing on it. Dealer/Kia denied responsibilty, despite the fact it was playing up from new and the damage was probably done in the car carrier ship.
