We aren't allowed to, because we've signed up to some very restrictive free trade agreements over the years in the naive belief that everyone else will hold hands and not protect thier industry too.
Remember some years back when an upholstery business here that supplied the big makers (and smaller manufacturers) with cloth and trim was getting into trouble because of cheap imports? The government was going to give them some simple tax breaks to help prop them up, but the international pressure came down like a ton of bricks and threatened Australia with penalties if it did so. I believe it was able to do this because the upholstery place also exported goods. We can probably only give the support we do now to the car makers here because they aren't big exporters and basically sell most of their cars internally. If they were major exporters, the international trade mobs would once again descend like a flock of vultures to stop us "interfering" with international trade. We're not allowed to support our farmers with subsidies...even though most European countries and the USA all do so, very strongly, even paying farmers NOT to grow crops that they have enough of. We can't protect our own industry in any real way, full stop. There's no easy answers, and we can no longer pretend we're an island...even if we actually are. Any decision made has to be looked at as to who it will offend overseas. |

But why would you compare a country with a successful auto industry to the Australian auto industry? The two are completely different. |

Wow Aurion outsold Falcon...that's got to be a first (and a new low). Even the BRZ/86 twins out did Falcon.
First time too the Jeep GC outsold the Territory.

China subsidise their manufacturing industry and people here gripe about the small amount they have gotten.

Does anyone have Falcon Ute numbers?
Hopefully, I will be adding to August sales by way of an EcoLPI Ute, that is if Orix get back to us - they seem to be really pushing Toyota... |

You'll love the LPi. I took a company XR6 LPi to a union meeting in Melbourne yesterday and it was magnificent. You would not ever pick it from a petrol version, except maybe it takes a second or so longer for the engine to fire once you have turned the key.
