Default SES to get 100's of Commodores to cut up

Seized hoon cars used by Lilydale SES volunteers in rescue and Jaws of Life training

TWO seized hoon cars were today ripped apart by Lilydale SES volunteers as they practised Jaws of Life training for the first time in Victoria.

Emergency services today demonstrated how seized hoon cars would be used to practise road accident rescues, after the scheme was announced in November last year.

Hoons who refuse to pay their fines and impoundment costs will have their cars automatically seized and used in future SES and CFA training drills.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Kim Wells said in Lilydale today the new scheme would provide a continuing supply of cars for volunteers to simulate rescues from car accidents.

“Previously these agencies had to rely on donations from wreckers or the local community and, while gratefully received, these vehicles were often not representative of the more modern types of vehicles that are encountered by road rescue crews,” Mr Wells said.

While I do think the scheme is probably not a bad idea, although it's terrible for someone to lose their car. But I can't help but think the Minister's optimism for a continuing supply of "hoon" cars, shows that maybe the strict "hoon" laws aren't actually working by preventing the act itself.

You've got love a politicians outlook... I guess what he's saying is that nobody crashes modern cars and 'hoons' only drive new ones ??

It is working but you will be surprised how many worthless bombs get impounded, that is why the owners do not pay & collect them.

I'm not sure on the legalities of confiscated cars, but how do financial institutions react to their encumbered vehicles being taken away from customers to be scrapped?

Something I did not know was that there is a $90 a day storage fee for impounded cars in QLD. Plenty of people will not retrieve the car after three months.

They should donate them to automotive TAFE centers around the country, we could have used something other than those ****** Holden engines from the 70s, the most modern equipment we had was from the 90s, it was one of those Holden V8s.

We had a few Holden I6s, a RB30 from a VL and a 3.8L V6 and 5L Holden V8 from the 90s.

We also had a VE Commodore but it was never used for anything apart from the scan tool section where you just had to plug it in and retrieve stored codes.

Its the same how states allow for increases in speeding fine revenue each year. If speed kills and its our number one problem, blah, blah, then just when are the Police expected to get on top of it? Shouldn't budgets be trending downwards for speed revenue and politicians boasting they get less revenue as proof its all working and lives are saved?

The trivialisation of road safety and the perversion of the duties of state police forces in the quest for meeting state budgets gets my blood boiling.

They would pursue the debtor to hell and back. The fact they don't have a car to drive, doesn't change the fact they owe money.

Lets be honest many of these cars would be in poor nick and not get much at auction anyway, so perusing the debtor was always the plan.

Yep, I know a local Auto Engineer here that had to cut one up for the Ambulance Service to use as a training vehicle to practice extracting patients.

He had to cut it in all the areas you guys would to free an occupant so it was as accurate a simulation as they could manage, and I watched him working on it one day and he had a hell of a time getting through the B pillar.

Shame there are no pics here as it was quite interesting to see the inner structure that gives them their strength: http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/s...-1226690983691

That's not a widening of the definition. It refers to people who ignore or refuse the chance to pay the fines they incurred or the vehicle storage fees thereby passing ownership of their cars to the government.

Correct. I know a bloke that had to pay an impoundment fee to get his car out a few months ago after it was confiscated

I'm also not sure of the legalities of confiscating cars. Hopefully somebody with a bottomless bank account will challenge the validity of these laws in court. I'd love to see how the government reacts when the court tells them they can't just take other people's property away.

As for encumbered cars being taken away, it doesn't change the fact that the customers owe money on the car. That money will have to be repaid, whether or not the customer is still in possession of the car.

Yes, but the reason the vehicle is "secured" to the finance in this type of loan, is so the financial institution can sell the car to recover at least part of the outstanding loan if the borrower stops paying.

Just like you can't sell a car with finance against it, I don't see how the gov can take it from the legal owner, the financier.

actually you can sell a car with finance against it, the buyer should ensure that arrangements are made to clear the debt prior to purchase.

many leases have an insurance component built in to cover the financier in case of default

just because there is finance against a car shouldn't stop it being seized, I'd say this has been thought through as part of its inception

I've said it before and it needs to be said again. Car confiscation is legalised theft, unless of course, we don't actually own our cars and are merely renting them from govco.

This is going against the grain here I know, but I have no problem with goon cars being taken and destroyed, I have these idiots out the front of my house most nights driving like they have no care for their car and even less for other people who may be arround.

These people drive out 5mins from town and think no one os there, we have no foot paths and as a result people walk on the hard shoulder, kids ride their bikes and these ****ets chuck skids at the intersection

Once we had on who lost it took out a tree and rolled, and after I got there saw they needed medical attention and called for the anbulance, fire brigade (fuel leaking from the vehicle) and the police come as a matter of course, the guy wanted to take me on for getting the cops

Personally I say take their cars cut them crush them what ever, if they are encumberd by finance that's their problem, I don't care if they have to continue to pay or have a default against them

Granted, there are idiots on the road. There always have been and always will be. However, unlike cars, driver's licences aren't property. Licences can, and should be taken away when a driver is behaving recklessly on the roads, but cars should not, simply because they are property to which the government have no right, certainly not without 'just cause' and compensation.

Unless, as Loud Noises said, they change the law so that we're not legally allowed to own cars, but merely to lease them ...

Totally agree...
I live in Caroline Springs (cop shop closes at 7pm)
From then until the wee small hours it sounds like the summernats "go to woa" and their burnout comp.
Seriously, the rubber buildup on some of the streets around here would put Lakeside drive during the Melb F1 to shame
Granted, some tough sounding cars at times but fairdinkum, can't they save it for Calder?

Unfortunately taking a license away doesn't stop many desperate's.

You often read in newspapers of unlicensed driver's being stopped/crashed/chased.

Perhaps a 'Big Brother' scenario where an offending driver wears an electronic bracelet that negates a cars ignition system
(yeah I know. I wouldn't work on older cars)

You often read in newspapers of unlicensed driver's being stopped/crashed/chased.

Perhaps a 'Big Brother' scenario where an offending driver wears an electronic bracelet that negates a cars ignition system
(yeah I know. I wouldn't work on older cars)
Not a bad idea thou, i was sort of thinking of a two strikes and your in gaol policy, first offence for unlicenced driving would be a massive fine of minimum $1000 (more depending on severity of offence) and if that same person gets caught again driving unlicenced within ten years of first offence its instant gaol. Might stop some of the repeat offenders??
