You coming over the border to live, or just to get your P's?
If it's the latter, I'd hazzard a guess that it's not possible as you don't live in SA.
As for driving over there, no problems. Just follow the law in VIC that relates to P plate restrictions, eg. speed, and you'll have no troubles.

You can't do it unless you have a registered address and ID to prove etc etc and to be honest just wait!!

(Means 4 years on your P's)

I thought about this a while ago, is it really worth the effort considering you need proof of residence over there?

(Or maybe you can rent out a PO box or a house for a month each year).

Yes it is possible, providing you can prove residency in SA, and has someone has already said, you must abide by Victorian laws when you drive in Victoria.

Lots of people do it, to SA and NSW.

I am hearing that all of Australia will be going to 17 yo licences soon, as every State has different laws and they (the Gvmt) want consistency.

Me too, yoink, straight away I'll be applying. Anyway if you were so desperate to get around the 4 years of P plates and the restriction it comes with, stay on your Ls until you're in your 20s, then apply and only do a short time on the Ps lol.

Having to wait until you are 18 is a pain in the butt when you are trying to get to work. I have been there done that as an apprentice when I was your age. But doing what you propose to do is illegal and while you may think you are too smart to get caught, don't think that you can outsmart the system, because 9 times out of 10 it will bite you in the butt!

To pull this off you would have to be VERY thorough, or else the local coppers will catch on to you. You might think that you are just one of thousands on the road but cops tend to pay close attention to P plate cars, especially ones with plates from another state that they see around regularly.

Consider that people are creatures of habit. They would have to only see you more than a couple of times over a month hanging out at your local hangout ( probably your local Maccas carpark) late on a Friday night when there are stuff all cars around. You will stand out and they will remember you. The interstate plates and the P plate will ensure that you stick out like dogs balls!

When questioned, you could argue that you just moved to Vic, etc,etc and that would work the first time you were questioned. But when that same cop pulls you up 1 month later still diplaying SA plates and an SA license, you could end up in a world of hurt, even to the point of having licence suspended until after you would have gotten your VIC licence! After all, you are supposed to change your address details within 7 days of moving and your rego within 30 if moving interstate.

Consider the worst case scenario and then ask yourself this. Wouldn't it be safer to just move closer to your boss and ride your pushy to his house for the next few months until you can legally get your licence in VIC?

If you still are going to do this, then I would only use the licence to drive to work and back. Doing typical P plate stuff ( driving around/hanging out in a public place with your car late at night, etc) will bring you unstuck IMO!

Heres another option. Go and get your motorbike L plates ( they used to let you have them at 17 in VIC) and buy a cheap bike or scooter to run to work on!

Good luck!

motobike license is 18 here now aswell,
im not going ot be hanging out at maccas doing fully sick burnouts or anything.

im just using it to drive to work and back

if i get pulled over im just going to say im back for a few weeks to visit mum n dad and giving my brother a hand at work.

if i get puled again ill just say im back permantly now because i got an apprenticeship here,

then i have 3 monthes left to use my licence once im permantly back in the state.

Yep, that's right, when we were frantically trying to get it registered for the Euroa show and shine 2 days later.
Ended up borrowing a trade plate, because vicroads wouldn't register it because I didn't have the previous owner's signature on the invoice, which turned out to be a huge hassle.

Does anyone know what the chances of this happening are?

Sorry to hi-jack the thread but i live in SA, where you can get your L's at 16, so i get my P's in 5 weeks when i am 16 when obviously i am still 16 and a half.

My dad lives in QLD where i believe its 17 to get your L's? He said to me that when i am up there i am aloud to drive because i live in SA and i have an SA licence, and i am visiting in QLD. But everyone else i talk to seems to think that i am not aloud to drive up there because of the age difference?

So whats the deal with that?

Good luck!

Where this will come unstuck is if you have a bad accident ( a fender bender you'll probably be OK) you won't stand serious scrutiny, insurance walks away etc. Use to get to work but be very careful.
